        Gymnodinioid Dinoflagellates (Gymnodiniales, Dinophyceae) in the Open Pacific Ocean

        Records of selected gymnodinioid dinoflagellates from the open waters in the vicinity of the Kuroshio and Oyashio Currents, the Philippine, Celebes, Sulu and South China Seas, western and central equatorial and southeast Pacific Ocean are described and illustrated. The species Gymnodinium fusus Schütt, Gyrodinium falcatum Kofoid et Swezy, G. caudatum Kofoid et Swezy, G. sugashimanii J. Cachon et al. and Pseliodinium vaubanii Sournia are considered to be morphotypes of a single species, that until further studies can establish the correct genus, are named G. falcatum. This study is the first to record individuals of G. falcatum with very long curly extensions. Other gymnodinioid dinoflagellates that showed bifurcated hyposomes may be related to Gyrodinium bifurcatum Kofoid et Swezy or cells of thecate dinoflagellates exuviated from their thecae. Some specimens showed a rigid cover, although no discernible thecal plates. In this group, the most common species was Ptychodiscus noctiluca Stein and, for the first time, a micrograph of a tentative specimen of the genus Berghiella Kofoid et Michener is reported. The validity of the genera Berghiella and Balechina Loeblich Jr. et Loeblich III with thick cell covers is discussed. Several species with apical extensions, other unknown taxa with distinctive shapes, and colonial forms are illustrated. The diversity of gymnodinioid dinoflagellates is underinvestigated in the open ocean.

        The Dinoflagellate Genera Brachidinium, Asterodinium, Microceratium and Karenia in the Open SE Pacific Ocean

        The morphometry and distribution of the unarmoured dinoflagellates Brachidinium capitatum F.J.R. Taylor, Asterodinium gracile Sournia, Microceratium orstomii Sournia and the toxic species Karenia papilionacea Haywood et Steidinger have been investigated in open waters of the SE Pacific Ocean. The genus Microceratium Sournia is recorded for the first time since the initial description. These taxa showed a high morphological similarity and they may correspond to life stages of a highly versatile single species that is able to project body extensions. Karenia papilionacea showed the higher abundance in the surface waters of the more productive areas (the Marquesas Archipelago and the Perú-Chile Current). Brachidinium capitatum and K. papilionacea often co-occurred, predominating B. capitatum in offshore surface waters. Asterodinium gracile was recorded at the bottom of the euphotic zone (down to 210 m depth), with a shallower distribution in more productive areas. Intermediate specimens of Asterodinium-Brachidinium-Karenia, with variable disposition and size of the body extensions were illustrated.

        Gynogonadinium aequatoriale gen. et sp. nov., a New Dinoflagellate from the Open Western Equatorial Pacific

        A new genus and species of marine dinoflagellate from the open western equatorial Pacific Ocean, Gynogonadinium aequatoriale gen. et nov. sp., is described from light and scanning electron micrographs. This laterally compressed unarmoured taxon had a triangular cell body in lateral view with two different elongate extensions. The end of the apical extension was spherical with a groove that arises from the epicone in the ventral side of the cell. The antapical extension was longer. The dorsal part of the cingulum showed undulated lists in each margin. The nucleus was ellipsoidal and perpendicularly crossed the cingulum. Dimensions of cells were 90-110 μm long and 43-55 μm wide in lateral view at the level of the cingulum. Gynogonadinium is placed in the order Gymnodiniales, family uncertain.

        Position of Hungarian Merino among other Merinos, within-breed genetic similarity network and markers associated with daily weight gain

        Objective: In this study, we aimed to position the Hungarian Merino among other Merinoderived sheep breeds, explore the characteristics of our sampled animals' genetic similarity network within the breed, and highlight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with daily weight-gain. Methods: Hungarian Merino (n = 138) was genotyped on Ovine SNP50 Bead Chip (Illumina, San Diego, CA, USA) and positioned among 30 Merino and Merino-derived breeds (n = 555). Population characteristics were obtained via PLINK, SVS, Admixture, and Treemix software, within-breed network was analysed with python networkx 2.3 library. Daily weight gain of Hungarian Merino was standardised to 60 days and was collected from the database of the Association of Hungarian Sheep and Goat Breeders. For the identification of loci associated with daily weight gain, a multi-locus mixed-model was used. Results: Supporting the breed's written history, the closest breeds to Hungarian Merino were Estremadura and Rambouillet (pairwise FST values are 0.035 and 0.036, respectively). Among Hungarian Merino, a highly centralised connectedness has been revealed by network analysis of pairwise values of identity-by-state, where the animal in the central node had a betweenness centrality value equal to 0.936. Probing of daily weight gain against the SNP data of Hungarian Merinos revealed five associated loci. Two of them, OAR8_17854216.1 and s42441.1 on chromosome 8 and 9 (–log10P>22, false discovery rate<5.5e-20) and one locus on chromosome 20, s28948.1 (–log10P = 13.46, false discovery rate = 4.1e-11), were close to the markers reported in other breeds concerning daily weight gain, six-month weight, and post-weaning gain. Conclusion: The position of Hungarian Merino among other Merino breeds has been determined. We have described the similarity network of the individuals to be applied in breeding practices and highlighted several markers useful for elevating the daily weight gain of Hungarian Merino.

        본 논문은 오늘날까지 현 세기에 사용되어 왔던 언어 교육의 방법들을 정리하고자 한다. 특히 각 방법의 목적과 문제점들을 제시하고자 한다. 또한, 수업에 상호 작용을 제약하는 요소들에 관해 얘기하고자 한다. 이 요소들을 다음과 같이 나눌 수 있다: 내용 소개가 바로 그것이다. 주제가 "스페인어 교육"이더라도 이 논문의 내용은 어떤 언어 교육에 적용될 수 있다. 그 이유는 현재까지 적용되어온 방법들은 언어에 상관없이 똑같이 때문이다. 본인은 이 논문이 모든 제2외국어 교육에 도움과 방향을 제시해 줄 것을 기대한다.

        Endoscopic transnasal anterior clinoidectomy for optic canal unroofing in a patient with fibrous dysplasia of the sphenoid bone

        Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a rare, benign disease, characterized by the replacement of normal medullary bone by fibro-osseous tissue. It is caused by somatic mutations in the α subunits of the stimulatory G protein encoded by the GNAS gene. FD can be divided into three categories. FD must be considered with any clival, sellar or parasellar lesion, especially with bone affection. Visual disturbances are one of the most disabling complications of this disease, secondary to optic canal compression. There is still controversy whether unroofing of the optic canal should be performed in these cases. We present the case of a 30-year-old woman who presented to our institution with a 3 weeks history of headache and blurred vision, for which a neuronavigated transnasal endoscopic resection was planned. We present a novel surgical approach, in which we performed a conventional transellar approach, with complete resection of an osseous lesion which infiltrated the sella turcica and clivus. Unroofing of the left optic canal and complete decompression of the optic nerve were performed, as well as an extradural clinoidectomy.

        In dialogue with the concepts of State of Emergency and Bare Life developed by Giorgio Agamben (1998), this paper explores the novel La transmigración de los cuerpos (2013) by Yuri Herrera, to see how the author builds a narrative space where the logic of the state of emergency is a detonator of the fictional plot. This analysis underlines how Herrera articulates a poetics of precariousness and violence to draw a map of desolation and despair recognizable through the cardinal points of death, fear, corruption and an agonizing will to survive. In this unnamed universe the characters’ bodies are subject to violence from the State and from criminals.

        Effect of acid treatment on extraction yield and gel strength of gelatin from whiptail stingray (Dasyatis brevis) skin

        Chemical properties of fish gelatins differ fromthose of conventional mammalian sources, representing anattractive technological alternative for the food industry. Ray filleting generates a considerable amount of skin wastethat can be used as a collagen source for gelatin extraction. Thus, this research evaluated the HCl and CH3COOHeffect, at 0.01, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 M, onextraction yield, molecular weight distribution, and gelstrength (GS) of whiptail stingray (Dasyatis brevis) skingelatins. Results showed differences (P\0.05) betweenacid type and concentration used. CH3COOH (0.15 M)gave the highest extraction yield (7.0% vs. 5.5% at 0.15 MHCl) and GS (653 ± 71 g vs. 619.5 ± 82 g at 0.2 M HCl). Gelatin electrophoretic profile from CH3COOH revealeda-/b-components and high molecular weight ([200 kDa)polymers. Ray gelatin GS was higher than commercialbovine gelatin, suggesting its possible use for technologicalfood applications.

      • Signatures of minor mergers in the Milky Way disc – I. The SEGUE stellar sample

        <P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P>It is now known that minor mergers are capable of creating structure in the phase‐space distribution of their host galaxy’s disc. In order to search for such imprints in the Milky Way, we analyse the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE) F/G dwarf and the Schuster et al. stellar samples. We find similar features in these two completely independent stellar samples, consistent with the predictions of a Milky Way minor‐merger event. We next apply the same analyses to high‐resolution, idealized <I>N</I>‐body simulations of the interaction between the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy and the Milky Way. The energy distributions of stellar particle samples in small spatial regions in the host disc reveal strong variations of structure with position. We find good matches to the observations for models with a mass of Sagittarius’ dark matter halo progenitor <IMG src='/wiley-blackwell_img/lap.gif' alt ='less-than or approximately equal-to'/>10<SUP>11</SUP> M<SUB>⊙</SUB>. Thus, we show that this kind of analysis could be used to provide unprecedentedly tight constraints on Sagittarius’ orbital parameters, as well as place a lower limit on its mass.</P>
