Background: Tuberculosis (TB) survivors have an increased risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study assessed the risk of COPD development and COPD-related hospitalization in TB survivors compared to controls. Methods: We conducted a population-based cohort study of TB survivors and 1:1 age- and sex-matched controls using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database collected from 2010 to 2017. We compared the risk of COPD development and COPD-related hospitalization between TB survivors and controls. Results: Of the subjects, 9.6% developed COPD, and 2.8% experienced COPD-related hospitalization. TB survivors had significantly higher COPD incidence rates (36.7/1,000 vs. 18.8/1,000 person-years, P < 0.001) and COPD-related hospitalization (10.7/1,000 vs. 4.3/1,000 person-years, P < 0.001) than controls. Multivariable Cox regression analyses revealed higher risks of COPD development (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.63; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.54–1.73) and COPD-related hospitalization (aHR, 2.03; 95% CI, 1.81–2.27) in TB survivors. Among those who developed COPD, the hospitalization rate was higher in individuals with post-TB COPD compared to those with non-TB COPD (10.7/1,000 vs. 4.9/1,000 person-years, P < 0.001), showing an increased risk of COPD-related hospitalization (aHR, 1.84; 95% CI, 1.17–2.92). Conclusion: TB survivors had higher risks of incident COPD and COPD-related hospitalization compared to controls. These results suggest that previous TB is an important COPD etiology associated with COPD-related hospitalization.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder that is characterized pathologically by the loss of motor neurons. Mutations in the <I>TAF15</I> gene have been implicated in the pathogenesis of ALS. TATA-binding protein associated factor 15 (TAF15) accumulates as cytoplasmic aggregates in neuronal cells, the clearance of which may be a therapeutic strategy for ALS. However, the identification of a novel regulator for protection against a TAF15-induced proteinopathy and the exact pathogenic mechanism of TAF15-induced neurodegeneration remain to be elucidated. Here, we show that parkin directly binds to TAF15 and that parkin overexpression can suppress the defective phenotypes, including the life span and locomotive activity of a TAF15-induced proteinopathy. We also found that overexpression of parkin in neuronal cells leads to a reduction in TAF15 levels, because of the E3 ubiquitin ligase activity of parkin. Our study provides in vivo evidence supporting the use of parkin for neuroprotection in a TAF15-induced proteinopathy and offers new insights into the pathogenic mechanisms underlying TAF15-induced ALS.</P>
Skin pore imaging using spectral‑domain optical coherence tomography: a case report

Sebum is an important component of the skin that has attracted attention in many fields, including dermatology and cosmetics. Pore expansion due to sebum on the skin can lead to various problems. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the morphologicalcharacteristics of sebum. In this study, we used optical coherence tomography (OCT) to evaluate facial sebum areas. Weobtained the OCT maximum amplitude projection (MAP) image and a cross-sectional image of skin pores in the facial area. Subsequently, we detected the sebum in skin pores using the detection algorithm of the ImageJ software to quantitativelydetermine the size of randomly selected pores in the proposed MAP images. Additionally, the pore size was analyzed byacquiring images before and after facial sebum extraction. According to our research, facial sebum can be morphologicallydescribed using the OCT system. Since OCT imaging enables specific analysis of skin parameters, including pores andsebum, skin analysis employing OCT could be an effective method for further research.

Sting injury by bees or wasps have become frequent recently and have become a matter to prevent and consider in companion animal health care. Therefore, it is necessary to better understand the level of toxicity of Hymenoptera insect venom, and in this study, we were to investigate the toxicity of honey bee venom and its effects on animals through an acute toxicity test using mice. The mouse acute toxicity test was performed by intraperitoneally administering 0, 2.5, 5, and 7.5 mg/kg of bee venom to C57BL/6 mice. Body weight changes and blood glucose levels were measured before and after administration. During the administration, major common symptoms were observed. Lethal dose 50(LD50)values were calculated and blood samples were collected from sacrificed animals and used for hematologic examination to measure blood levels of ALB, ALT, AST, BUN, LDL, HDL, and total cholesterol. As a result of the mouse acute toxicity test, the LD50 value was found to be 4.48 mg/kg in male and 5.86 mg/kg in female C57BL/6 mice. Information on the toxicity of bee venom and hematological analysis results will provide basic data for the health care and emergency treatment of animals stung by bees.
4점 가력 굴곡수밀시험을 통한 비금속 상수관로 이음부의 내진 성능평가 연구

최근 10년 동안 전국적으로 지진과 침수에 의한 산사태, 지반침하 등 토양 유실피해 사례가 증가함에 따라, 상수도 시설의 피해도 함께 늘어나고 있다. 2010년‘상수도시설기준’ 개정 시 수도시설에 대한 내진 기준이 신설되었으나, 일반적인 내진설계만을 권고하고 있는 수준으로 관로의 취약한 부분에 대한 내진설계 방안 마련이 요구되고 있다. 특히 기능적 문제를 일으킬 수 있는 관로의 주요 취약부분은 재난발생 시 피해규모 및 양상을 예측하기 어려워 이에 대한 조사가 시급하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 국내 수도권 상수도 배관 중 12.1% 이상이 매설되어있는 PVC관, PE관을 대상으로 4점 가력굴곡수밀시험을 시행하여 이음부의 파괴특성과 내진성능을 조사하였다. 시험 지그 배드위에 관로 양단을 지지하고 엑츄에이터를 이용하여 배관 중간 두 지점에 하중을 단계적으로 가하며 파괴특성 및 변형을 파악하였다. 시험 결과 PVC관과 PE관 각각 자중처짐을 포함해 축 변위 647, 630 mm (51.7, 49.6°)와 560 mm (48.4°)조건에서도 누수가 발생하지 않음을 확인하였고, 시험에서 얻은 이음부 회전정도와 모멘트의 관계 및 strain 결과로부터 비금속관 이음부의 내진설계에 필요한 기초자료를 제시하였다.
