      • Attenuation of inflammatory pain by puerarin in animal model of inflammation through inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators

        Ullah, Muhammad Zia,Khan, Ashraf Ullah,Afridi, Ruqayya,Rasheed, Hina,Khalid, Sidra,Naveed, Muhammad,Ali, Hussain,Kim, Yeong Shik,Khan, Salman Elsevier 2018 INTERNATIONAL IMMUNOPHARMACOLOGY Vol.61 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In the current study, the puerarin was investigated for both acute Carrageenan and chronic CFA-induced inflammatory pain models. The Puerarin treatment significantly attenuated (P < 0.001) the mechanical hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia in both Carrageenan and CFA-induced hyperalgesia. The Puerarin treatment also remarkably reduced (<I>p</I> < 0.001) the thermal hyperalgesic responses in both acute Carrageenan as well as chronic CFA-induced models. Furthermore, the Puerarin administration was also associated with significant inhibition of (<I>p</I> < 0.001) paw edema in both Carrageenan and CFA-induced models. The inflammatory mediators such as IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are significantly enhanced during inflammatory conditions, however, the Puerarin administration significantly altered (P < 0.001) the mRNA expression levels of these mediators. Additionally, the Puerarin treatment also significantly enhanced (P < 0.001) the mRNA expressions levels of the anti-oxidant enzymes such as Nrf2, HO-1 and SOD2. The Puerarin treatment is associated with significant (P < 0.001) inhibition of the acetic acid-induced Evans blue vascular permeability. Moreover, the concentration of Puerarin in various tissues was analyzed using High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the results showed that the Puerarin was significantly distributed towards the peripheral tissues such as liver and kidney and less distributed towards the brain.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Puerarin possess strong antinociceptive properties in animal models. </LI> <LI> Puerarin inhibited various inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α), and (VEGF). </LI> <LI> Vascular permeability was significant inhibited by puerarin. </LI> <LI> No apparent toxic effect of puerarin was observed. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Ionic liquids based fluorination of organic compounds using electrochemical method

        Zia Ul Haq Khan,Yongmei Chen,Dondan Kong,Nawshad Muhammad,Arif Ullah Khan,Faheem Ullah Khan,Kamran Tahir,Aftab Ahmad,Lei Wang,Pingyu Wan 한국공업화학회 2015 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.31 No.-

Ionic liquids due to their advantageous properties gain importance in many fields. This study aims tooverview the use of ionic liquids in the selective partial fluorination of organic compounds throughelectrochemical method. In addition to ionic liquid based fluorination, the earlier approaches offluorination through an electrochemical process have also been highlighted. The factors such aselectrode materials (Pt, Ni, and C), types of solvents (CH3CN, DMC, THF, DME, Sulfone, etc.) and type ofelectrolytes (Et3N 3HF, Et3NF 3HF, py HF, etc.) which affect the electrochemical fluorination of organiccompounds have been reviewed. For electrode preparation, the carbon, platinum and nickel wereconsidered suitable materials to be used as an electrode. In CH3CN media, Et3N 3HF and Et4NF 3HFshowed better efficiency during fluorination of organic compounds. Solvent play an important role inelectrochemical fluorination of organic compounds, with the change of solvent the percentage yield ishighly affected. Py-HF is a convenient solvent-supporting electrolyte medium with a reasonably goodconductivity. The electrolyte containing solvents have some side effects on electrochemical fluorinationof organic compounds as observed in cyclic voltammetric analysis. Therefore electrochemicalfluorination to organic compounds without the use of solvent gained more importance. The ionicliquids have been reported for its dual properties, as solvent as well as a fluorinating agent for organiccompounds in electrochemical processes. It has been concluded that solvents free electrochemicalfluorination of organic compounds gives good results as compare to solvent based. Ionic liquids due tomore oxidative stability were noted to have considerable effect on the yield and selectivity of organiccompound fluorination.

Effects of Maillard reaction on physicochemical and functional properties of walnut protein isolate

        Sahibzada Fahim Ullah,Nasir Mehmood Khan,Farman Ali,Shujaat Ahmad,Zia Ullah Khan,Noor Rehman,Abdul Khaliq Jan,Nawshad Muhammad 한국식품과학회 2019 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.28 No.5

In this study, the Maillard reaction (MR) ofglucose was applied to improve the physicochemical andfunctional properties of walnut protein isolate (WNPI). TheMR products (MRPs) were prepared with glucose at 0 h(MRP0), 1 h (MRP1), 2 h (MRP2) and 3 h (MRP3) heatingat 95 C. The Infra-Red spectrum showed reduction ofamide and S–H functionalities in MRPs with completeintermixing of glucose in MRP3. Scanning electronmicroscopy indicated changes in the morphology of MRP3which also exhibited promising antioxidant effect. Significantdecrease (P\0.05) in hydrophobicity values (Ho)and increase (P\0.05) in emulsifying activity/emulsifyingstability indexes values were observed for MRPs. Uniform droplet distribution was observed in microscopyof emulsions while an increase in the interfacial proteinconcentration (U) was obtained for MRPs. These resultssuggest that MR is useful in improving the utilization ofthis protein in food product development.

Effect of extraction methods on structural, physiochemical and functional properties of dietary fiber from defatted walnut flour

        Gul Mali Khan,Nasir Mehmood Khan,Zia Ullah Khan,Farman Ali,Abdul Khaliq Jan,Nawshad Muhammad,Rizwan Elahi 한국식품과학회 2018 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.27 No.4

The effect of different extraction methods i.e. extraction with alkali (AEDF), enzyme (EEDF) and enzyme plus shear emulsifying hydrolysis (SEDF) on structure, physiochemical as well as the functional characteristics of dietary fiber (DF) from defatted walnut flour were studied. AEDF process showed significantly higher (P\0.05) amount of water retention capacity (WRC; 5.39 g/g), water swelling capacity (WSC; 3.16 g/mL), and particle size; while, shown lower value of oil adsorption capacity (OAC; 29 g/g) amongst all. Compared to AEDF, no major differences were observed in network except the matrix in EEDF and SEDF was more porous and honey comb like. DF extracted through AEDF, EEDF and SEDF showed good viscosity and emulsifying activity however, less stability indices. The results from this study suggest that AEDF and EEDF and SEDF had specific effects on the structure-functional properties of DF from defatted walnut flour, which has great potential in food applications.

Multi-aging Effects on Vegetable Based Oils for Transformer Insulation in HV Systems

        Khan Irfanullah,Abid Muhammad Ahtasham,Ullah Kaleem,Ullah Zahid,Haider Aun,Ahmad Farhan Ammar,Zia Zain,Ali Sahibzada Muhammad 대한전기학회 2021 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.16 No.5

Liquid insulation media is used for insulation and cooling purpose inside the transformer. Currently, transformers are using petroleum based mineral oil, which poses a serious hazardous environmental impact, since the mineral oil is non-renewable and non-biodegradable. Although, the increased cost and depleting nature of mineral oil cause an emergent need to use suitable alternatives to mineral oils that are biodegradable and environmentally friendly. In response to this resource issue, various vegetable oils, namely Sunfl ower oil, Soya bean oil, and a blend of Sunfl ower and Olive (BSO) oil are suitable alternatives for transformer insulation in high voltage systems. The afore-mentioned vegetable oils are subjected to multi-aging and comparative analysis is performed with mineral oil. Further, the dielectric and thermal properties of vegetable oils are tested before and after aging. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, water content, breakdown voltage, viscosity, fl ash point, tan delta, and pour point tests are performed on vegetable oils before and after aging. Finally, a comparative analysis of vegetable oils with mineral oil is provided to prove the effi cacy of the proposed vegetable oils. The BSO oil resulted in higher breakdown strength and good thermal behavior when subjected to the abovementioned various diagnostic measurement tests in comparison to other oils

Naila Chand,Shabana Naz,Zia ur Rehman,Rifat Ullah Khan 한국응용생명화학회 2018 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.61 No.3

The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of optimum and high ambient temperatures on biochemical parameter of four broiler strains. Broiler chicks (n = 242) of four different commercial strains (Ross, Hubbard, Cobb and Arber Acer) on day 15 were divided into two groups: thermo-neutral zone (TN) group and high ambient temperature zone (HAT) group. Chicks in TN group were housed at constant room temperature (25 C ± 2 C and RH 65 ± 5%) while chicks in HAT group were kept under HAT of summer. Chicks in each group were further divided into four subgroups, i.e., TNRoss, TN-Hubbard, TN-Cobb, TN-Arber Acer and HATRoss, HAT-Hubbard, HAT-Cobb, HAT-Arber Acer. Each subgroup was further subdivided into four replicates having ten chicks per replicate. Blood was collected on day 21 and 42. Mean serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine amino transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphates (ALP), glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) were significantly higher (P\0.05) in HAT group, while total serum protein and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were significantly higher (P\0.05) in TN group. In TN zone group, significantly (P\0.05) lower AST, ALT, glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL and significantly (P\0.05) higher HDL and total protein were recorded for Cobb and Hubbard strains. In HAT zone group, significantly (P\0.05) lower AST, ALT, glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL and significantly (P\0.05) higher HDL and total protein were recorded for Ross and Arber Acer strains. The findings of the present study suggested that Ross and Arber Acer strains were more tolerant to summer HAT of tropical areas than Cobb and Hubbard, while Cobb and Hubbard strains were more effective in TN environment.
