        Famine exposure in early life and type 2 diabetes in adulthood: findings from prospective studies in China

        BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relationship between famine exposure in early life and the risk of type 2 diabetes in adulthood during the 1959–1961 Chinese Famine. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A total of 3,418 individuals aged 35–74 years free of diabetes from two studies in 2006 and 2009 were followed up prospectively in 2009 and 2012, respectively. Famine exposure was classified as unexposed (individuals born in 1962–1978), fetal exposed (individuals born in 1959–1961), child exposed (individuals born in 1949–1958), and adolescent/adult exposed (born in 1931–1948). A logistic regression model was used to assess the relationship between famine exposure and diabetes after adjustment for potential covariates. RESULTS: During a three-year follow-up, the age-adjusted incidence rates of type 2 diabetes were 5.7%, 14.5%, 12.7%, and 17.8% in unexposed, fetal-exposed, child-exposed, and adolescent/adult-exposed groups, respectively (P < 0.01). Relative to the unexposed group, the relative risks (95% confidence inter val) for diabetes were 2.15 (1.29–3.60), 1.53 (0.93– 2.51), and 1.65 (0.75–3.63) in the fetal-exposed, child-exposed, and adolescent/adult-exposed groups, after controlling for potential covariates. The interactions between famine exposure and obesity, education level, and family histor y of diabetes were not obser ved, except for the urbanization type. Individuals living in rural areas with fetal and childhood famine exposure were at a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, with relative risks of 8.79 (1.82–42.54) and 2.33 (1.17–4.65), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that famine exposure in early life is an independent predictor of type 2 diabetes, particularly in women. Early identification and inter vention may help prevent diabetes in later life.

        Enhancement of Photoluminescence by Ag Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance for Ultraviolet Detection

        For higher sensitivity in ultraviolet (UV) and even vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) detection of siliconbased sensors, a sandwich-structured film sensor based on Ag Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) was designed and fabricated. This film sensor was composed of a Ag nanoparticles (NPs) layer, SiO 2 buffer and fluorescence layer by physical vapour deposition and thermal annealing. By tuning the annealing temperature and adding the SiO 2 layer, the resonance absorption wavelength of Ag NPs matched with the emission wavelength of the fluorescence layer. Due to the strong plasmon resonance coupling and electromagnetic field formed on the surface of Ag NPs, the radiative recombination rate of the luminescent materials and the number of fluorescent molecules in the excited state increased. Therefore, the fluorescent emission intensity of the sandwich-structured film sensor was 1.10–1.58 times at 120–200 nm and 2.17–2.93 times at 240–360 nm that of the single-layer film sensor. A feasible method is provided for improving the detection performance of UV and VUV detectors.

        In recent years, with the rapid development of internet technology, enterprise business model has entered a new century. The emergence of network economy has forced retail enterprises to change the original marketing mode, global information resources can be shared instantly, which greatly improve the operational efficiency and reduce the cost. In this paper, we analyze the influence factors that impact on retail enterprises based on consumers online shopping behavior, survey data from small and medium enterprises. The result shows that macro environment factors, market competition, enterprise self factors will affect the enterprise's e-commerce performance, and significantly promote the enterprise's market strategy innovation. Therefore, it is an important way to improve the competitiveness of enterprises by carrying out the E-business market strategy.

        First-principle investigation on multiferroicity and interfacial coupling of nonstoichiometric tetragonal La2/3Sr1/3MnO3/BiCoO3 interface

        The energetically stable tetragonal nonstoichiometric La2/3Sr1/3MnO3/BiCoO3 (LSMO/BCO) interface, whose chemical formula is (BiO)3(CoO2)4/(LaO)3(SrO)1(MnO2)3, was investigated by using first-principle calculations. A magnetoelectric coupling effect, i.e., an electric control of the magnetism, was approved by a maximum variation of 17.9% in magnetic moments tuned by the electric polarization reversal. The interfacial coupling was controlled by the polar shifts of the interfacial Co and/or O atoms. A huge variation in spin-polarization from 6.3% to 72.7% was achieved upon switching the electric polarization. These findings are useful for magnetoelectric coupled spintronic device applications.

        Rapid Nondestructive Prediction of Multiple Quality Attributes for Different Commercial Meat Cut Types Using Optical System

        There are differences of spectral characteristics between different types of meat cut, which means the model established using only one type of meat cut for meat quality prediction is not suitable for other meat cut types. A novel portable visible and near-infrared (Vis/NIR) optical system was used to simultaneously predict multiple quality indicators for different commercial meat cut types (silverside, back strap, oyster, fillet, thick flank, and tenderloin) from Small-tailed Han sheep. The correlation coefficients of the calibration set (Rc) and prediction set (Rp) of the optimal prediction models were 0.82 and 0.81 for pH, 0.88 and 0.84 for L*, 0.83 and 0.78 for a*, 0.83 and 0.82 for b*, 0.94 and 0.86 for cooking loss, 0.90 and 0.88 for shear force, 0.84 and 0.83 for protein, 0.93 and 0.83 for fat, 0.92 and 0.87 for moisture contents, respectively. This study demonstrates that Vis/NIR spectroscopy is a promising tool to achieve the predictions of multiple quality parameters for different commercial meat cut types.

      • IF YOU DO NOT LIKE ME, I DO ESG – FIRMS’ RESPONSE TO THE NEGATIVE SENTIMENT

        This paper tests firms’ strategic response to negative consumer sentiment. We use sentiment analysis on social media posts to detect and proxy for negative consumer sentiments toward the firms and operationalize the number of ESG positive news about the firms as the strategic response to the sentiment. We document a surprising phenomenon that negative sentiment toward a firm is positively associated with future ESG news announcements by the firm. The effect is stronger for B2B firms than for B2C ones. We argue this is the firm’s strategic reaction rather than being a true change in the firm’s ESG policy, because (1) The ESG effect only lasts for a short period, and (2) the negative sentiment toward the firm decreases after the ESG news. Using former US president Trump’s tweets as external shocks, we show the causal relationship in a DID framework.
