The Hyperactivity of Efferent Auditory System in Patients with Schizophrenia: A Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions Study

        Noor Alaudin Abdul Wahab,Suzaily Wahab,Abdul Hamid Abdul Rahman,Dinsuhaimi Sidek,Mohd. Normani Zakaria 대한신경정신의학회 2016 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.13 No.1

ObjectiveaaElectrophysiological studies, which are mostly focused on afferent pathway, have proven that auditory processing deficits exist in patients with schizophrenia. Nevertheless, reports on the suppressive effect of efferent auditory pathway on cochlear outer hair cells among schizophrenia patients are limited. The present, case-control, study examined the contralateral suppression of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) in patients with schizophrenia. MethodsaaParticipants were twenty-three healthy controls and sixteen schizophrenia patients with normal hearing, middle ear and cochlear outer hair cells function. Absolute non-linear and linear TEOAEs were measured in both ears by delivering clicks stimuli at 80 dB SPL and 60 dB SPL respectively. Subsequently, contralateral suppression was determined by subtracting the absolute TEOAEs response obtained at 60 dBpe SPL during the absence and presence of contralateral white noise delivered at 65 dB HL. No attention tasks were conducted during measurements. ResultsaaWe found no significant difference in absolute TEOAEs responses at 80 dB SPL, in either diagnosis or ear groups (p>0.05). However, the overall contralateral suppression was significantly larger in schizophrenia patients (p<0.05). Specifically, patients with schizophrenia demonstrated significantly increased right ear contralateral suppression compared to healthy control (p<0.05). ConclusionaaThe present findings suggest increased inhibitory effect of efferent auditory pathway especially on the right cochlear outer hair cells. Further studies to investigate increased suppressive effects are crucial to expand the current understanding of auditory hallucination mechanisms in schizophrenia patients.

Listening to Sentences in Noise: Revealing Binaural Hearing Challenges in Patients with Schizophrenia

        Noor Alaudin Abdul Wahab,Mohd. Normani Zakaria,Abdul Hamid Abdul Rahman,Dinsuhaimi Sidek,Suzaily Wahab 대한신경정신의학회 2017 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.14 No.6

Objective: The present, case-control, study investigates binaural hearing performance in schizophrenia patients towards sentences presented in quiet and noise. Methods: Participants were twenty-one healthy controls and sixteen schizophrenia patients with normal peripheral auditory functions. The binaural hearing was examined in four listening conditions by using the Malay version of hearing in noise test. The syntactically and semantically correct sentences were presented via headphones to the randomly selected subjects. In each condition, the adaptively obtained reception thresholds for speech (RTS) were used to determine RTS noise composite and spatial release from masking. Results: Schizophrenia patients demonstrated significantly higher mean RTS value relative to healthy controls (p=0.018). The large effect size found in three listening conditions, i.e., in quiet (d=1.07), noise right (d=0.88) and noise composite (d=0.90) indicates statistically significant difference between the groups. However, noise front and noise left conditions show medium (d=0.61) and small (d=0.50) effect size respectively. No statistical difference between groups was noted in regards to spatial release from masking on right (p=0.305) and left (p=0.970) ear. Conclusion: The present findings suggest an abnormal unilateral auditory processing in central auditory pathway in schizophrenia patients. Future studies to explore the role of binaural and spatial auditory processing were recommended.

Yield Improvement by Two Cycles of Mass Selection in Two Sweet Corn Populations

Nigussie Mandefro,Saleh Ghizan,Wahab Zakaria,Sinniah Uma Rani The Korean Society of Crop Science 2005 Korean journal of crop science Vol.50 No.2

Mass selection (MS) is an efficient selection method to directly improve highly heritable traits. In the present study, two cycles of MS for ear length were conducted on two sweet corn populations, BC2-l0 and $BC1-10{\times}Syn-II$ after introgression of exotic germplasm. The improved populations generated from these selections were evaluated in comparison with the base populations at two locations, to determine the genetic gains and performance of the improved populations. The two base populations showed varied average realized responses to MS. In BC2-l0 derived population, the realized responses were $9.1\%$ in BC2-l0 C1 and $1.2\%$ in BC2-l0 C2, whereas in$BC1-10{\times}Syn-II$ derived population, the realized responses were$ 5.6\%$ in $BC1-10{\times}Syn-II$ C1 and $2.9\%$ in $BC1-10{\times}Syn-II$ C2. All the improved populations showed longer ears than their respective base populations and the check varieties. Ear length, which was used as the selection criterion in this study, showed high broad-sense heritability in the BC2-l0 and $BC1-10{\times}Syn-II$ derived populations, while fresh ear yield revealed low heritability, indicating that selection for ear length in these populations would be more effective than direct selection for yield. Results of this study indicate that MS conducted on BC210 and $BC1-10{\times}Syn-II$ had significantly increased ear length and fresh ear yield in both populations. The improved populations obtained would serve as better germplasm sources and further selection in these populations could offer better responses.

Evaluation of in vitro Water Stress Tolerance among EMS - Induced Variants of Banana (Musa spp., AAA), Using "Morphological, Physiological and Molecular" Traits

        Bidabadi, Siamak Shirani,Mahmood, Maziah,Meon, Sariah,Wahab, Zakaria,Ghobadi, Cyrus 한국작물학회 2011 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.14 No.4

Water stress is a serious environmental restriction to banana productivity. Hence, the objective of this study was to employ in vitro mutagenesis in selection and characterization of drought tolerant lines in banana. In vitro culture responses of ethyl methanesulphonate induced variants of banana cultivars, 'Berangan Intan' and 'Berangan' were assessed concerning morphological, physiological and molecular characteristics involving mutated shoot tips on MS medium supplemented with 30 g $L^{-1}$ PEG. The results showed that water stress tolerant lines could be obtained from induced variations. Variants $L_{2-5}$ and $L_{1-5}$ showed the highest number of leaves per shoot (2.37 and 2.06, respectively) and the lowest were recorded in the parental lines $L_{1-1}$ and $L_{2-1}$ (0.81 and 0.93, respectively). Fresh weight and shoot vigor rate indicated the maximum increase in the water stress tolerant lines compared with susceptible and non-mutated parental lines. $L_{2-5}$ exhibited the most increase in the chlorophyll and the most reduction in $H_2O_2$ and MDA contents when exposed to water stress. Under PEG treatment, proline and relative water content was enhanced in $L_{1-5}$, $L_{2-5}$, $L_{2-6}$, $L_{1-6}$, $L_{2-3}$, $L_{2-4}$, and $L_{1-4}$. RAPD analysis revealed polymorphism (18.35 and 21.48%) among variants derived from 'Berangan Intan' and 'Berangan', respectively. The amplified fragments generated by primers opc01, opc04, opa11, and opa20 observed to be specific for $L_{2-5}$ and $L_{1-5}$ as more tolerant followed by $L_{2-3}$, $L_{1-4}$, $L_{2-6}$, and $L_{1-6}$ as moderately tolerant lines against water stress. This study demonstrates the application of in vitro mutagenesis in selection of water stress tolerant lines of banana as a convenient, cheap, and rapid technique.

Feasibility and efficacy of erector spinae plane block versus transversus abdominis plane block in laparoscopic bariatric surgery: a randomized comparative trial

Elshazly Mohamed,EL-Halafawy Yasser Mohamed,Mohamed Dina Zakaria,Wahab Khaled Abd El,Mohamed Tamer Mohamed Kheir 대한마취통증의학회 2022 Korean Journal of Anesthesiology Vol.75 No.6

Background: Overweight and obesity are growing public health concerns worldwide. Bariatric surgery is a modality of weight reduction; however, postoperative pain can increase the length of hospital stay, with all the associated consequences. While regional anesthesia is an available option, the feasibility of performing abdominal wall blocks on patients with obesity is questionable. Methods: Sixty adult patients with a body mass index of 40–50 kg/m2 undergoing laparoscopic bariatric surgery were randomly assigned to receive either an ultrasound-guided transversus abdominis plane (TAP) or erector spinae plane (ESP) block. The primary outcome was the analgesic effect in the first 24 h postoperatively, assessed using the mean visual analog scale (VAS) score. Secondary outcomes were the time required for a successful block, incidence of complications, time to first rescue analgesia, time to flatus or stool passage, and total opioid consumption. Results: The mean VAS score during the first 24 h was higher with the TAP block than with the ESP block (2.78 ± 0.34 vs. 2.32 ± 0.12, P < 0.001). Additionally, the time to first rescue analgesia was greater with the ESP block (P = 0.001) and the time required for a successful block was higher with the TAP block (P = 0.001). However, the incidence of complications, total opioid consumption, and other secondary outcomes was similar between the groups. Conclusions: Compared with the TAP block, the bilateral ESP block is a more feasible and effective method for intra- and postoperative analgesia in patients undergoing laparoscopic bariatric surgery.
