<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Early and differential diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a problem that puzzled many doctors. Reliable markers in easy‐assembling samples are of considerable clinical diagnostic value. In this work, laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS) was developed a new method that potentially allows early and differential diagnosis of AD from the platelet sample. Raman spectra of platelets isolated from different ages of AD transgenic mice and non‐transgenic controls were collected and analyzed. Multilayer perceptron networks (MLP) classification method was used to classify spectra and establish the diagnostic models. For differential diagnosis, spectra of platelets isolated from AD, Parkinson’s disease (PD) and vascular dementia (VD) mice were also discriminated. Two notable spectral differences at 740 and 1654 cm–1 were revealed in the mean spectrum of platelets isolated from AD transgenic mice and the controls. MLP displayed a powerful ability in the classifying of early, advanced AD and the control group, and in differential diagnosis of PD and advanced AD, as well as VD and advanced AD. The results suggest that platelet detecting by LRS coupled with MLP analysis appears to be an easy and accurate method for early and differential diagnosis of AD. This technique could be rapidly promoted from laboratory to the hospital. (© 2011 by Astro Ltd., Published exclusively by WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. This paper presents a numerical solution for the thick cylinders made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) with a constant Poisson's ratio and an arbitrary Young's modulus. We define two fundamental solutions which are derived from an ordinary differential equation under two particular initial boundary conditions. In addition, for the single layer case, we can define the transfer matrix N. The matrix gives a relation between the values of stress and displacement at the interior and exterior points. By using the assumed boundary condition and the transfer matrix, we can obtain the final solution. The transfer matrix method also provides an effective way for the solution of multiply layered cylinder. Finally, a lot of numerical examples are present.

This paper provides an iteration approach for the solution of multiple notch problem, which is based on the complex variable boundary integral equation (CVBIE). The contours of notches are applied by some loadings. The source points are assumed on the boundary of individual notch and the displacements along the boundaries become unknowns to be investigated. After discretization of the BIE, many influence matrices are obtained. One does not need to assemble many influence matrices into a larger matrix. This will considerably reduce the work in the program. The displacements along the many boundaries can be obtained from an iteration. There is no limitation for the configuration of notches. Several numerical examples are provided to prove the efficiency of the suggested approach.
MR damping system for mitigating wind-rain induced vibration on Dongting Lake Cable-Stayed Bridge
Chen, Z.Q.,Wang, X.Y.,Ko, J.M.,Ni, Y.Q.,Spencer, B.F.,Yang, G.,Hu, J.H. Techno-Press 2004 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.7 No.5
The Dongting Lake Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge crossing the Dongting Lake where it meets the Yangtze River in southern central China. Several intensive wind-rain induced vibrations had been observed since its open to traffic in 1999. To investigate the possibility of using MR damping systems to reduce cable vibration, a series of field tests were conducted. Based on the promising research results, MR damping system was installed on the longest 156 stay cables of Dongting Lake Bridge in June 2002, making it the worlds first application of MR dampers on cable-stayed bridge to suppress the wind-rain induced cable vibration. As a visible and permanent aspect of the bridge, the MR damping system must be aesthetically pleasing, reliable, durable, easy to maintain, as well as effective in vibration mitigation. Substantial work was done to meet these requirements. This paper describes field tests and the implementation of MR damping systems for cable vibration reduction. Three-years reliable service of this system proves its durability.
Properties of integral operators in complex variable boundary integral equation in plane elasticity
Chen, Y.Z.,Wang, Z.X. Techno-Press 2013 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.45 No.4
This paper investigates properties of integral operators in complex variable boundary integral equation in plane elasticity, which is derived from the Somigliana identity in the complex variable form. The generalized Sokhotski-Plemelj's formulae are used to obtain the BIE in complex variable. The properties of some integral operators in the interior problem are studied in detail. The Neumann and Dirichlet problems are analyzed. The prior condition for solution is studied. The solvability of the formulated problems is addressed. Similar analysis is carried out for the exterior problem. It is found that the properties of some integral operators in the exterior boundary value problem (BVP) are quite different from their counterparts in the interior BVP.

This paper provides a complex variable BIE for solving the periodic notch problems in plane plasticity. There is no limitation for the configuration of notches. For the periodic notch problem, the remainder estimation technique is suggested. In the technique, the influences on the central notch from many neighboring notches are evaluated exactly. The influences on the central notch from many remote notches are approximated by one term with a multiplying factor. This technique provides an effective way to solve the problems of periodic structures. Several numerical examples are presented, and most of them have not been reported previously.
A numerical solution for a finite internally cracked plate using hybrid crack element method
Chen, Y.Z. Techno-Press 2011 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.40 No.6
This paper provides a numerical solution for a finite internally cracked plate using hybrid crack element method (HCE). In the formulation, an inclined crack is placed in any place of a rectangular element and the complex variable method is used. The complex potentials are expressed in a series form, and several undetermined coefficients are involved. The complex potentials for the cracked rectangle are first suggested in this paper. Based on a variational principle, the element stiffness matrix can be evaluated. The next steps are same as in the usual finite element method. Several numerical examples with computed stress intensity factor and T-stress are presented.
Characterization and modeling of a self-sensing MR damper under harmonic loading
Chen, Z.H.,Ni, Y.Q.,Or, S.W. Techno-Press 2015 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.15 No.4
A self-sensing magnetorheological (MR) damper with embedded piezoelectric force sensor has recently been devised to facilitate real-time close-looped control of structural vibration in a simple and reliable manner. The development and characterization of the self-sensing MR damper are presented based on experimental work, which demonstrates its reliable force sensing and controllable damping capabilities. With the use of experimental data acquired under harmonic loading, a nonparametric dynamic model is formulated to portray the nonlinear behaviors of the self-sensing MR damper based on NARX modeling and neural network techniques. The Bayesian regularization is adopted in the network training procedure to eschew overfitting problem and enhance generalization. Verification results indicate that the developed NARX network model accurately describes the forward dynamics of the self-sensing MR damper and has superior prediction performance and generalization capability over a Bouc-Wen parametric model.
