Background: The STOP-BANG questionnaire is a simple screening tool with high sensitivity for the detection of severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Predicting airway obstruction would allow the safe management of sedative patients to prevent intraoperative hypoxia. This study was designed to check the correlation between the STOP-BANG score and oxygen saturation (SpO2) during sedation and confirm the availability of the STOP-BANG questionnaire as a preoperative exam for predicting the incidence of hypoxia in sedative patient management.Methods: This study included 56 patients who received spinal anesthesia. The pre-anesthesia evaluation was conducted using the STOP-Bang questionnaire. The patients were under spinal anesthesia with an average block level of T10. Dexmedetomidine was infused with a loading dose of 1 μg/kg over 10 min and a maintenance dose of 0.5 μg/kg/h until the end of the procedure. The SpO2 of the patients was recorded every 5 min.Results: The STOP-Bang score was negatively correlated with the lowest SpO2 (coefficient = –0.774, 95% confidence interval [CI]: –0.855 to –0.649, standard error [SE] = 0.054, P < 0.001). The item of “observed apnea” was the most correlated one with hypoxic events (odds ratio = 6.00, 95% CI: 1.086 to 33.145).Conclusions: The STOP-BANG score was significantly correlated with the lowest SpO2 during spinal anesthesia, which enabled the prediction of meaningful hypoxia before it occurred in the sedated patients.

Background: Health forecasting has been used in an attempt to provide timely and tailored meteorological information to patients and healthcare providers so that they might take appropriate actions to mitigate health risks and manage healthcare-related needs. This study examined the in-depth perceptions of healthcare providers and the general public regarding the utilization of meteorological information in the healthcare system in Korea. Methods: The COREQ (Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research) checklist was applied to this study. We conducted three focus group discussions in accordance with semi-structured guidelines developed to deal with various aspects of the utilization of meteorological information in healthcare settings. The verbatim transcriptions and field notes were analyzed according to content analysis. Results: Six physicians, four nurses, three emergency medical technicians, and seven members of the general public participated in the focus group discussions. There were some individual discrepancies among most participants regarding the health effects of climate change. Although several physician participants felt that meteorological information utilization is not a prime concern during patient care, most of the general public participants believed that it should be used in the patient care process. The provision of meteorological information to patients undergoing care is expected to not only improve the effective management of climate-sensitive diseases, but also boost rapport between healthcare providers and patients. Conclusions: More attempts should be made to provide meteorological information to groups vulnerable to climate change, and the effects of this information should be evaluated in terms of effectiveness and inequality. The findings of this study will be helpful in countries and institutions trying to introduce health forecasting services.

<P>In this study, the electrode performance of composite films composed of highly conductive multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polymerized with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) are improved with the use of HCl-methanol (HCl-met) treatment. The HCl-met treatment affects film properties, including surface morphology, optical transmittance, work function (Phi), and electrical conductivity, which are investigated using various kinds of MWCNT/PEDOT:PSS composite systems. As a result of the HCl-met treatment, all MWCNT/PEDOT:PSS films undergo considerable changes in molecular ratio and arrangement between PEDOT and PSS, but their MWCNTs have no chemical/structural transitions. This in turn enhances the electrical conductivity and catalytic activity of the MWCNT/PEDOT:PSS films without changing their other properties. Furthermore, because of these effects, the HCl-met treatment brings about noticeable enhancements in performance as the source/drain electrode in an organic thin-film transistor and as the catalytic counter electrode in a dye-sensitized solar cell.</P>

Paraneoplastic pemphigus is a rare, life-threatening disorder associated with an underlying neoplasm, which presents with painful stomatitis and polymorphous skin lesions. Successful diagnosis of paraneoplastic pemphigus can lead to the diagnosis and treatment of the underlying malignancy. However, involvement of the respiratory system is typically unresponsive to treatment. Herein, we report the case of a 44-year-old female diagnosed with paraneoplastic pemphigus with underlying follicular lymphoma treated with a chemotherapy regimen including rituximab. Her skin lesions and underlying lymphoma responded to treatment, but bronchiolitis obliterans continued to progress and resulted in fatal respiratory failure. (Ann Dermatol 33(3) 271∼274, 2021)
Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis in a Border Collie: A Case Report

A 2-year-old spayed female Border Collie presented with visual deficits and behavioral changes. Neurological examination revealed bilateral menace response deficit with a normal pupil light reflex. Cerebral cortical thinning, cerebral sulci and cerebellar fissure widening, ventriculomegaly, and cerebral atrophy were observed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Histopathology revealed fluorescent lipopigment accumulation in the cerebrum, and the dog was diagnosed with neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis. This is the first case report describing the changes in clinical signs, MRI findings, and histopathologic changes in neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis in Korea.

<▼1><P>The organic doping facilitates the high performance of MWCNT/PEDOT:PSS composite electrode in organic devices.</P></▼1><▼2><P>In this study, composite films composed of highly conductive multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polymerized with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) were fabricated <I>via</I> additional organic-compound doping. The effects of glycerol (GL) or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) doping on the film properties, such as surface roughness, work function (<I>Φ</I>), and conductivity, were studied for both PEDOT:PSS and MWCNT/PEDOT:PSS composite systems. The interactive couplings between the PEDOT and PSS molecules became disordered upon doping with GL or DMSO, which altered the conjugated structure between the PEDOT and PSS chains. Therefore, the electrical conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS and MWCNT/PEDOT:PSS films was enhanced by the addition of GL or DMSO molecules. The GL-doped PEDOT:PSS (PEGL) and ultraviolet (UV)-oxidized MWCNT/PEDOT:PSS (0.2-UVGL) films exhibited comparable work functions (PEGL = 4.87 eV, 0.2-UVGL = 5.0 eV). They also had lower sheet resistances (<I>R</I>s; PEGL = 806.7 ± 50 Ω □<SUP>−1</SUP>, 0.2-UVGL = 613 ± 120 Ω □<SUP>−1</SUP>) as compared to those of the undoped PEDOT:PSS (<I>Φ</I> = 4.92 eV, <I>R</I>s = 1.03 ± 0.10 MΩ □<SUP>−1</SUP>) and MWCNT/PEDOT:PSS composites (<I>Φ</I> = 4.7 eV, <I>R</I>s = 2184 ± 244 Ω □<SUP>−1</SUP>). Furthermore, because of these excellent electrical properties, the doped MWCNT/PEDOT:PSS films showed great potential as the source/drain electrode in an organic thin-film transistor and as the catalytic counter electrode in a dye-sensitized solar cell. In conclusion, devices with 0.2-UVGL electrodes performed better than the corresponding devices with other MWCNT/PEDOT:PSS composite electrodes and the device characteristics were comparable to that of standard devices with platinum/fluorine-doped tin oxide electrodes.</P></▼2>

본 연구의 목적은 한국 사회적경제기본법(안) 제정에서 발생한 쟁점을 파악하고 한국 사회적경제의 제도화가 가지는 함의를 살펴보는데 있다. 이에 본고는 국회에 공식적으로 제출된 사회적경제기본법 제정 법률안과 민간에서 제안한 사회적경제기본법안, 국회의 공청회 과정에서 발생한 자료들을 중심으로 한국 사회적경제의 정의, 범주, 지원정책 등 사회적경제기본법 제정에 관한 쟁점들과 제도화가 가지는 함의들에 대해 연구하였다. 유럽에서 시작된 사회적경제 대한 개념을 우리사회에 적용하고 그 실체를 법률로 구체화하기 위해서는 사회적경제에 대한 더 많은 학문적, 정책적 논의가 있어야 한다. 그러나 사회적경제기본법 제정의 필요성에는 시민사회와 정치권의 동의가 있었으므로 우선 사회적경제기본법을 제정하고 보완사항은 제정 후 수정해 나가면 된다고 제안하였다. The purpose of this study is to examine the issues and implications of institutionalization of the Social Economy Act in Korea. In response, the institute studied issues and institutionalization related to the enactment of the Framework Act on Social Economy, the proposed Framework Act on Social Economy, and the National Assembly's public hearing. In order to apply the concept of social economy originated in Europe to our society and embody its substance into law, there must be more academic and policy discussions on the social economy. However, the necessity of enacting the Framework Act on Social Economy was agreed by civil society and politicians, so it was suggested that the Framework Act on Social Economy should be enacted first and supplementary matters should be revised after enactment.
