We developed plasmonic dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with tailor-designed Au-TiO2 nanostructures integrated into the photoanode. Mutually antagonistic Au-TiO2 core-shell structures supported on SiO2 spheres (SiO2@TiO2@AuNP and SiO2@AuNP@TiO2) were prepared and incorporated as additives into the photoanodes of the DSSCs. The DSSCs employing the nanocrystalline-TiO2 (nc-TiO2)/SiO2@TiO2@AuNP and nc-TiO2/SiO2@AuNP@TiO2 as photoanodes showed remarkably enhanced power conversion efficiencies up to about 14% and 10%, respectively, with respect to a reference cell containing an nc-TiO2/SiO2@TiO2 photoanode. This can be mainly attributed to the enhanced dye absorption by the intensified near-field effect of AuNPs and plasmon-enhanced photocurrent generation.

<P>Hierarchically arranged stripes of photoswitchable liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) containing azobenzene moieties were conveniently crafted via a flow-enabled self-assembly (FESA). Interestingly, by subjecting a drop of LCP solution to dry in a restricted geometry comprising two nearly parallel plates with a stationary upper plate and a movable lower plate that programmably traveled in a 'stop -and-move' manner during the FESA process, photoswitchable LCP stripes were yielded, displaying two modes of deposition, namely, periodic primary stripes of large dimensions and regularly spaced secondary stripes of small dimensions situated between adjacent, primary stripes (i.e., forming hierarchical LCP stripes). Notably, these hierarchical azobenzene moieties-containing stripes demonstrated sequential photoinduced reversible phase transition (i.e., photoswitching) due to the thickness difference between primary and secondary stripes. A UV light-induced expansion effect. was observed on the LCP stripes. Clearly, such rapid creation of hierarchical stripes by FESA represents a robust means of organizing polymers, nanoparticles, colloids, DNA, etc. into complex yet ordered patterns over a large area in a simple and controllable manner for potential use in surface relief grating, photoactuators, photoswitchable devices, antifake labels, etc.</P>

<P>Graphitic thin films embedded with highly dispersed titaniumdioxide(TiO<SUB>2</SUB>) nanoparticles were incorporated for the first timeinto the conventional dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), resultingin a remarkably improved cell efficiency due to its superior electronconductivity. Massively ordered arrays of TiO<SUB>2</SUB> dots embeddedin carbon matrix were fabricated via UV-stabilization of polystyrene-<I>block</I>-poly(4-vinylpyridine) films containing TiO<SUB>2</SUB> precursors followed by direct carbonization. For dye-sensitizedTiO<SUB>2</SUB> based solar cells containing carbon/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> thin layers at both sides of pristine TiO<SUB>2</SUB> layer, anincrease of 40.6% in overall power conversion efficiency was achievedcompared with neat TiO<SUB>2</SUB>-based DSSCs. In this paper, the kinetics of acylation reaction of o-phenylenediamine/p-phenylenediamine and benzoic anhydride were determined in microreactors, respectively. A kinetic model was established, all kinetic parameters including reaction orders, reaction rate constants, pre-exponential factors, and activation energies were acquired. Validation experiments showed experimental data fit well with calculated data at different reactant concentrations and residence times. The comparisons of the reaction rate constants and activation energies were summarized to show the difference of chemical reactivities of phenylenediamines. According to the calculation of the kinetic model, the optimized reaction conditions were listed to meet the monoacylation selectivity equal to 97.0%.
