Effects of Galla chinensis extracts on UVB-irradiated MMP-1 production in hairless mice.

<P>Galla chinensis (GAC) is a natural traditional Chinese medicine that has been widely used in folk medicine. Although GAC compounds (mainly gallic acid and methyl gallate) possess strong antiviral, antibacterial, anticancer, and antioxidant activities, there is no report regarding topical or oral administration of GAC compounds on UVB irradiation-induced photoaging in hairless mice (SKH: HR-1). In the present study, we examined cell viability, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in skin fibroblasts and keratinocytes induced by UVB in vitro. We also studied skin damage by measuring skin thickness, elasticity, wrinkling and levels of protein MMP-1, elastin, procollagen type I, and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) in hairless mouse skin chronically irradiated by UVB in vivo. GAC treatment significantly prevented skin photoaging by reducing the levels of ROS, MMP-1, and IL-6 and promoting production of elastin, procollagen type I, and TGF-β1. According to the results of H&E staining and Masson's trichrome staining, GAC reduced skin thickness and wrinkle formation while it increased skin elasticity. The effects of GAC on UVB-induced skin photoaging may be due to suppressed MMP-1 expression. These findings could be referenced for the development of new agents that target UVB-induced photoaging.</P>

The PM10, SO₂ and NO₂ mass concentrations were obtained over five years from monitoring stations across Nanchong, a southwest city in China. Changes in urban air quality over time, as well as the factors influencing that change, were evaluated based on air pollutant concentrations, the Air Pollution Index (API), and the Comprehensive Pollution Index (P). The results showed that the total annual mean PM10, SO₂ and NO₂ concentrations over the five years studied were 61.1±1.1, 45.0±3.9 and 34.9±4.9 μg·m-3, respectively. The annual mean concentrations displayed a generally decreasing trend; lower than the annual mean second-level air quality limit. Meanwhile, the annual mean API values were in a small range of 52-53, the air quality levels were gradeⅡ, and P values were 1.06-1.21 less than the slight level (P ≤ 1.31). Total monthly mean PM10, SO₂, NO₂ concentrations, and API and P values were consistently higher in winter and spring than during autumn and summer. The results of a correlation analysis showed that temperature and pressure were the major meteorological factors influencing pollution levels. Pollution sources included industrial coal and straw burning, automobiles exhaust and road dust, fireworks, and dust storms.
Effect of Co Doping on the Elastocaloric Effect of Ni-Mn-Ga-Co Alloy

Large latent heat is produced in the stress-induced martensitic phase transition process of Ni-Mn-Ca-based materials, i.e., elastocaloric effect. That makes such materials show tremendous potential for solid-state refrigeration which is identified as one of the most promising non-vapor-compression cooling devices. However, the still low refrigeration ability of these materials restricts further commercially promoting of solid-state refrigeration. In this work, we adjusted the Co content to regulate the elastocaloric effect for the Ni51.5Mn25Ga23Co0.5. According to the results, the transformation strain and ratio of loading stress/transformation temperature (dσ/ dT) were increased by replacing the Ni atoms with a little more Co, leading to an improvement of the stressinduced transformation entropy-change ΔSσ. As a result, a huge ΔSσ of 45.0 JKg-1K-1 is achieved in Ni50Mn25- Ga23Co1 alloy.
