From our previous studies in a farm in Songcheon, Andong where a series of crops was cultivated in 2008 and 2009, occurrence patterns of Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) and its egg parasitism by Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) and Gryon japonicum (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) were reported. With an objective to verify the trend of the occurrence pattern, a year long monitoring of R. pedestris and its egg parasitism was continued in 2010 in the same location where barley, sesame, and soybean were cultivated in series. We placed four aggregation pheromone traps added with 50 refrigerated eggs of R. pedestris each along the perimeter of the field from 11 April to 31 October. Weekly occurrence patterns of R. pedestris and its parasitism in 2010 were generally similar to the patterns of previous years. Riptortus pedestris population first appeared in the last week of April, peaked after the third week of August, and declined in October. Parasitism by G. japonicum was recorded up to 64% in July, 2010 which was much higher than previous years. This study verifies that G. japonicum is the first colonizer that appears as early as May and remains active until September. Ooencyrtus nezarae, however, starts to occur late from the last week of August and exist in the field until October.

Periodical release of non-viable refrigerated eggs of Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) has been found to enhance field parasitism level in soybean fields. However, optimum refrigeration conditions required for the eggs in order to preserve its quality to ensure effective level of parasitism for a longer period has been rarely reported. We assessed optimum environment condition for refrigeration of the eggs using three different temperatures (2, 6, and 10℃) and relative humidities (RH) (high, medium and low). Eggs of R. pedestris were refrigerated at nine combinations of temperature and relative humidity for 30 consecutive days. Those eggs were taken out and after 8 days, mated female Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) were individually exposed to the eggs, and their development, emergence, and sex ratio were examined. Number of eggs parasitized was highest (5.9) on eggs stored at 6℃ and high RH. Significantly higher male proportion was recorded in the eggs stored at 10℃. However, RH had no effect on the sex ratio. For both male and female, development time was the least on host eggs stored at 2℃ and high RH. Adult emergence was recorded highest from the eggs stored at 2℃ followed by 6℃ and at high RH. In conclusion, eggs refrigerated below 6℃ at high RH condition maintained better quality of R. pedestris eggs for the parasitization by O. nezarae.
16S rDNA Sequence and Biochemical Characters of a Korean Isolate of Xenorhabdus nematophilus

A Gram-negative bacterium, Xenorhabdus nematophilus, is mutualistically associated with entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema carpocapsae. A bacterial isolate was obtained from the nematode collected in Korea and identified as X nematophilus Kl (Park et al., 1999). This study was focused on the characterization of the bacterial isolate by 16S ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) sequence, fatty acid composition, carbon source utility, and insecticidal activity that were compared with those of other related bacteria. The universal ribosomal primers were used to amplify 1,536 bp rDNA. The 16S rDNA sequence showed high homology (equation omitted 97%) with those of foreign X nematophilus isolates, but slightly lower homologies with those of other species in the entomopathogenic bacteria. Though there was variation in fatty acid composition between two X nematophilus isolates, they shared the major fatty acid as palmitic acid (16:0), while that of X poinarii and X bovienii was oleic acid (18:1). Carbon source utility characters of the Kl isolate differed with those of the French isolate. Two X nematophilus had high insecticidal activity against the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua, but the Kl isolate was 18 times as potent as the French isolate. These taxonomic comparisons suggest that the Kl isolate had unique physiological characters in fatty acid composition, carbon source utility, and insecticidal activity in the species.

A symbiotic bacterium was idnetified from the etomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema carpocapsae, collected in Korea and its biological significance was examined for insecticidal and antibiotic effects. The symbiotic bacterium was isolated from the nematode-infected hemolymph of the fifth instar larvae of Spodoptera exigua. The intra-hemocoelic injection of the bacterial isolates killed the insect hosts within 24h. Several biochemical and morphological characters of the bacterium were identical to those of Xenorhabdus nematophilus. The bacterial growth was not showed antibacterial effects on containing 4,000 ppm of streptomycin sulfate or 2,000 ppm of penicillin. They showed antibacterial effects on Escherichia coli, Ralstonia solanacearum and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but not on Pseudomonas putida and Pseudomonas fluorescens.

Background/Aims: This study compared long-term clinical outcomes between male and female acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients with and without diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods: From November 2011 to December 2015, 13,104 patients with AMI were enrolled in the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry National Institutes of Health (KAMIR-NIH) (4,458 diabetic patients and 8,646 non-diabetic patients). Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to reduce bias due to confounding variables. Following PSM, 2,046 diabetic patients, 1,023 males (69.8 ± 9.4 years) and 1,023 females (69.9 ± 9.4 years); and 3,412 non-diabetic patients, 1,706 males (70.0 ± 10.4 years) and 1,706 females (70.4 ± 10.8 years) were analyzed. Clinical outcomes were compared between male and female patients with and without diabetes over a 3-year clinical follow-up. Results: In diabetic patients, mortality (21.1% vs. 21.5%, p = 0.813) and major adverse cardiac events (MACE) (30.6% vs. 31.4%, p = 0.698) were not significantly different between males and females. However, mortality (15.8% vs. 12.0%, p = 0.002) and MACE (20.8% vs. 15.6%, p < 0.001) were significantly higher in male non-diabetic patients than in female non-diabetic patients. The predictors of mortality for both males and females in the diabetic and non-diabetic groups were old age, heart failure, renal dysfunction, anemia, and no percutaneous coronary intervention. Conclusions: The long-term clinical outcomes in AMI patients with DM did not significantly differ by sex. However, the mortality and MACE in non-diabetic male patients were higher than those in females.

최근 대부분 기업들 환경에서의 정보 시스템들은 지역적으로 분산되어 있으며 다양한 형태로 구성되어 있으므로, 사용자 의사 결정을 지원하는데 필요한 통합된 정보를 얻는 것은 어려운 일이다. 따라서 이러한 문제를 효율적으로 정보 검색에 적용하기위해 사용자에게 단일 인터페이스를 제공하고, 이기종 시스템들간에 구축된 데이터베이스 시스템들은 각각 독립성을 유지하면서 하나의 인터페이스처럼 투명성을 제공할 필요성이 있다. 이를 위해 ISO/IEC 11179에서 연구 중인 XMDR의 개념을 이용하여 정보검색에서 발생하는 “의미적 상호운용성(semantic interoperability)"이라는 문제점을 해결하고, 이 XMDR에 지식 인스턴스 계층을 통한 지식공유를 가능하게 함으로써 단순 검색의 한계점을 극복할 수 있도록 한다. 본 논문에서는 데이터 표현에 사용되는 명칭, 속성, 관계성에 대한 이질적인 문제를 해결하기 위한 표준 온톨로지, 각 레거시 시스템을 연결하는 중간자(mediation)역할을 수행하는 로케이션 온톨로지, 지식공유가 가능하도록 하는 지식 인스턴스 계층으로 구성하는 방법을 제안한다. 또한 지식 인스턴스 계층은 협업적인 검색 환경 하에서 각각의 정보시스템에서 다양한 형태의 지식을 공유 및 통합에 있어 구조화 되지 않은 지식들을 어떻게 공유할 것인가에 대한 개념적인 모델을 제시한다.
아이코사노이드 생합성 저해제인 벤질리덴아세톤의 점박이응애(Tetranychus urticae)와 세균성풋마름병 세균(Ralstonia solanacearum)에 대한 억제효과

A monoterpenoid compound, benzylideneacetone (BZA), is a metabolite of an entomopathogenic bacterium, Xenorhabdus nematophila. Its primary biological activity is an inhibitor of phospholipase A₂, which catalyzes the committed step of biosynthesis of various eicosanoids that are critically important to mediate insect immune responses. When BZA was applied to two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, it exhibited a dose-dependent mortality in leaf-disc assay. Subsequently BZA was tested against T. urticae infesting apples in a field orchard, in which it showed a significant control efficacy, which was not statistically different with that of a commercial acaricide. BZA also had significant antibacterial activities against three species of plant pathogenic bacteria when it was added to the bacterial cultures, in which it showed the highest inhibitory activity against a bacterial wilt-causing pathogen, Ralstonia solanacearum. The bacterial pathogen caused significant disease symptom to young potato plants. However, BZA significantly suppressed the disease occurrence. This study suggests that BZA can be used to develop a novel crop protectant to control mite and bacterial pathogen.

Background/Aims: While switching strategies of P2Y12 receptor inhibitors (RIs) have sometimes been used in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients, the current status of in-hospital P2Y12RI switching remains unknown. Methods: Overall, 8,476 AMI patients who underwent successful revascularization from Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry-National Institute of Health (KAMIR-NIH) were divided according to in-hospital P2Y12RI strategies, and net adverse cardiovascular events (NACEs), defined as a composite of cardiac death, non-fatal myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, or thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) major bleeding during hospitalization were compared. Results: Patients with in-hospital P2Y12RI switching accounted for 16.5%, of which 867 patients were switched from clopidogrel to potent P2Y12RI (C-P) and 532 patients from potent P2Y12RI to clopidogrel (P-C). There were no differences in NACEs among the unchanged clopidogrel, the unchanged potent P2Y12RIs, and the P2Y12RI switching groups. However, compared to the unchanged clopidogrel group, the C-P group had a higher incidence of non-fatal MI, and the P-C group had a higher incidence of TIMI major bleeding. In clinical events of in-hospital P2Y12RI switching, 90.9% of non-fatal MI occurred during pre-switching clopidogrel administration, 60.7% of TIMI major bleeding was related to pre-switching P2Y12RIs, and 71.4% of TIMI major bleeding was related to potent P2Y12RIs. Only 21.6% of the P2Y12RI switching group switched to P2Y12RIs after a loading dose (LD); however, there were no differences in clinical events between patients with and without LD. Conclusions: In-hospital P2Y12RI switching occurred occasionally, but had relatively similar clinical outcomes compared to unchanged P2Y12RIs in Korean AMI patients. Non-fatal MI and bleeding appeared to be mainly related to pre-switching P2Y12RIs.
