Penile Strangulation: A Novel Surgical Procedure without Cutting Equipment

Strangulation of the penis is a rare condition that usually results from the placement of various constricting devices to enhance sexual stimulation. Such a condition requires emergency treatment to prevent penile ischemia, necrosis, urethral injury, and erectile dysfunction. This paper reports the case of a 51-year-old man who was referred for penile pain and swelling following the self-placement of an industrial metallic ring at the base of the penis. The metallic ring was removed safely without using specialized equipment.

We developed an mPCR assay for the simultaneous detection, in one tube, of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes using species-specific primers. The mPCR employed the E. coli O157:H7 specific primer Stx2A, Salmonella spp. specific primer Its, S. aureus specific primer Cap8A-B and L. monocytogenes specific primer Hly. Amplification with these primers produced products of 553, 312, 405 and 210 bp, respectively. All PCR products were easily detected by agarose gel electrophoresis, and the sequences of the specific amplicons assessed. Potential pathogenic bacteria, in laboratory-prepared and four commercially available kimchi products, were using this mPCR assay, and the amplicons cloned and sequenced. The results correlated exactly with sequences derived for amplicons obtained during preliminry tests with known organisms. The sensitivity of the assay was determined for the purified pathogen DNAs from four strains. The mPCR detected pathogen DNA at concentrations ranging from approximately 0.45 to 0.05 pM/μl. Thus, this mPCR assay may allow for the rapid, reliable and cost-effective identification of four potentially pathogens present in the mixed bacterial communities of commercially available kimchi.
Leadership and Public Service Motivation in the Military Organization: The Moderating Effect of Age

Drawing on survey data from 1,746 enlistees in the Republic of Korea military, this paper examines the moderating effect of age on the impact that the leadership of superiors have on their subordinates’ public service motivation (PSM). Our analysis shows that transformational leadership and transactional leadership both have a positive statistical correlation with PSM. Furthermore, the relationship between transformational leadership and PSM is negatively moderated by age. This means that the higher the age, the smaller the positive influence of transformational leadership becomes on PSM. Based on our analysis, to cultivate public service motivation within a military organization, we make policy recommendations for building and practicing an integrated form of leadership that combines the advantages of the transformational and transactional methods, and in terms of discovering and applying forms of leadership in pursuit of the public good and social responsibility as organizational goals.
A Pair of Ultra-Wideband Planar Transitions for Phase Inversion Applications

<P>A pair of planar transitions which produce ultra-wideband (UWB) in-phase and inverted-phase signals has been developed for phase-inversion circuit applications. The two similar transitions consist of three transitional structures between microstrip line, coplanar waveguide, and parallel stripline. The proposed transitions offer design flexibility in achieving a wide range of impedances with various substrates. The implemented transitions provide low insertion loss, good impedance matching, and UWB performance from 2.1 to over 25 GHz within ±5<SUP>°</SUP> phase difference from 180<SUP>°</SUP>.</P>
Identification of Dynamic Load Model Parameters Using Particle Swarm Optimization

This paper presents a method for estimating the parameters of dynamic models for induction motor dominating loads. Using particle swarm optimization, the method finds the adequate set of parameters that best fit the sampling data from the measurement for a period of time, minimizing the error of the outputs, active and reactive power demands and satisfying the steady-state error criterion.

Recently, many studies have been reported on the magnetoresistance and Hall effect of REBCO thin films and bulk. The voltage interferes quench detection of high-temperature superconducting magnet and generates leakage current in no insulation hightemperature superconducting coil. Therefore, in this paper, experiments on magnetoresistance and Hall effect of commercial YBCO and GdBCO tapes have been carried out. As a result, anomalous voltages expected for the magnetoresistance and Hall effect of REBCO tapes were observed and analyzed. In addition, the voltage characteristics of REBCO have been identified, and the Hall coefficient are calculated for use in high magnetic field magnet applications.
Designing Test Methods for IT-Enabled Energy Storage System to Evaluate Energy Dynamics

With increasing interests in renewables, more consumers are installing an energy storage system (ESS) in their backyards, and thus, the ESS will play a critical role in the emerging smart grid. Due to mechanical properties, however its operational dynamics must be well understood before connecting the ESS to the smart grid (and eventually to an IT system). To this end, we investigate charging and discharging processes in detail. This paper, then, proposes methods for four type tests (state of charge test, conversion efficiency test, response time test, and ramp rate test) that can assess the dynamics of the ESS. The proposed methods can capture accurate delay values of mechanical processes in the ESS, and it is expected for those values to help design real-time communication systems in the smart grid involving the ESS.

Pycnogenol (PYC) is believed to have potential as a therapeutic agent against free radical-mediated oxidative stress. It is important, therefore, to understand the interactions between PYC and cellular defenses against oxidative stress. Toward this end, we analyzed the survival rates on the gene expression responses of E. coli sod katG mutants to PYC after pre-treatment of PQ or H2O2-mediated stress under aerobic conditions. We identified SOD induced by PYC, but not HP1 in sod katG mutants. A striking result was the PYC induction of SOD with antioxidant property in single katG mutant cells, particularly MnSOD and CuZnSOD. These inductions were further increased with oxidative stress, while HP1 was not induced in these conditions. The effects of pycnogenol treatment on these cells depend in part on its concentration on the stress response. Protective effects of PYC exposure which affected gene expression in cells were consistent with cell survival rates. Our results demonstrate that pycnogenol may alter the stress response gene expression in a specific manner such as SoxRS because PYC induction of single mutant only worked under increased PQ stress. All together our data indicate that SOD activity is essential for the cellular defense against PQ-mediated oxidative stress, suggesting that PYC may not be effective as an antioxidant in only oxidative stress conditions. On the other hand, it was expected that PYC may play a role as a pro-oxidant and if it is available for use, it should be evaluated carefully.
