We investigated a linear carbon nanotube motor serving as the key building block for nano-scale motion control by using molecular dynamics simulations. This linear nano-motor, is based on the electrostatically telescoping multi-walled carbon-nanotube with ultralow intershell sliding friction, is controlled by the gate potential with the capacitance feedback sensing. The resonant harmonic peaks are induced by the interference between the driving frequencies and its self-frequency. The temperature is very important factor to operate this nanomotor.

Purpose: To report a case of a patient who developed scleromalacia after cosmetic eye whitening conjunctivectomy and treated with scleral and conjunctival autograft. Case summary: A 42-year-old male patient who received cosmetic eye whitening conjunctivectomy in both eyes on the nasal side in 2008 developed scleromalacia in the left eye. Calcium deposits and deformed conjunctiva were removed from the left eye. Autogenous sclera and conjunctiva were obtained from the upper side of the left eye and autogenous graft was performed. Topical antibiotics, topical steroid, topical autologous serum, and antibiotic ointment were applied postoperatively. The patient was given oral steroid for 1 month after surgery. During the postoperative 6 months, the grafted autogenous sclera was well maintained and improved cosmetically. Conclusions: In cases of scleromalacia occurring after cosmetic eye whitening conjunctivectomy, autogenous sclera can be considered as a treatment filler. Carbon nanotube oscillators encapsulating copper nanowire were investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The excess forces due to the carbon-carbon van der Waals interactions are higher than the excess force due to carbon-copper interactions. And the masses of copper atoms are higher than those of carbon atoms. So, the carbon atoms are easier accelerated than the copper atoms. When the encapsulated copper nanowire deforms the encapsulating nanotube, the frequency can not be estimated by the mass-frequency dependence in classical oscillation theory.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between the concentration of aqueous humor cytokines and the severity of diabetic retinopathy. Methods: Thirty-six subjects were included in the control, non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) groups, each group has 12 patients. Aqueous levels of cytokines (interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1, interferon (IFN)-γ, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α) were investigated according to the severity of diabetic retinopathy. Results: When the control group was compared with the PDR and NPDR groups, aqueous levels of IL-6 were significantly higher in PDR patients than in those of both the control and NPDR groups (<EM>p</EM> = 0.016 and p = 0.003, respectively). The aqueous levels of VEGF were significantly higher in the eyes of PDR patients than in those of the control group (<EM>p</EM> = 0.003). There were no statistically significant differences between the 3 groups with regard to other cytokines. Conclusions: Aqueous levels of IL-6 and VEGF were higher in the eyes of PDR patients than in those of healthy controls. J Korean Ophthalmol Soc 2014;55(12):1821-1827

나노튜브를 기반으로 한 용량성 나노 가속도계에 대한 특성을 고전적인 분자동역학 시뮬레이션을 이용하여 연구하였다. 외부에서 공급된 힘을 이용하여 나노튜브의 위치를 제어할 수 있었고, 해당하는 위치에 의한 커패시턴스의 변화를 통하여 피드백 센싱을 할 수 있었다. 에너지 소모 측면을 고려하면, 나노 가속도계의 진동 특성은 초기 변위와는 무관하였으며, 이러한 측정 시스템은 진동하는 커패시턴스를 추적하여 가속도를 결정하고, 이것은 또한 공급된 힘과 용량성 힘, 반데르발스 힘, 결합력, 반발력과 같은 힘들이 균형을 이루는 위치를 결정할 수 있다. We investigated the characteristics of a capacitive nano-accelerometer based on carbon nanotube by means of classical molecular dynamics simulations. The position of the telescoping nanotube was controlled by the externally applied force and the feedback sensing was achieved from the capacitance change. Considering energy dissipation, the oscillation features of the nano-accelerometers were similar, regardless of their initial displacements. The capacitance variations, which were almost linearly proportional to the applied acceleration, were monitored within an error tolerance.
