Functional Response and Spatial Distribution of Aphid Parasitoid Aphelinus asychis

The functional response and spatial distribution of parasitoid may be useful for understanding host-parasitoid dynamics because information on these will give knowledge of the host-parasitoid interaction, which could lead to the development of strategy for biological control of insect pests. The functional responses of A. asychis on the green peach aphid and potato aphid was investigated in eggplant leaf-disc arena. As a result, among the three types of functional response, type III best described the A. asychis response to the aphid densities, according to the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC). Functional response and spatial distribution of A. asychis on green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, was investigated on 5x5 eggplants in the net cage. After M. persicae were inoculated uniformly at the densities of 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 (per plant) on upper, middle and lower leaves of each 25 eggplants, one mated female of A. asychis was introduced on the central eggplant. Each aphid density was duplicated. A. asychis showed a type II functional response different from that estimated on the eggplant leaf-disc arena. Although the initial distribution of the aphids in the 25 eggplants was uniform vertically and horizontally, the aphids became gradually concentrated on the upper leaves of eggplants, so did immature A. asychis.

Anatatus orientalis is an important natural enemy parasitizing eggs of lanternfly Lycorma delicatula White. In order to effectively utilize this parasitoid, the parasitism rates of lantern-fly and emergence of its parasitoid were surveyed in different areas. Results showed that the emergences of wasp Anatatus orientalis from different areas had significant differences. Those parasitoids emerged from lantern-fly eggs collected from Yangling of Shaanxi province, Qinhuangdao of Hebei province, and Dagang District of Tianjin City came out focus on May only, while wasps from Yantai of Shandong province showed 2 obvious emergence peaks in May and September respectively. Wasp populations with emergence asynchrony in Yantai area were analyzed by different periods. Results revealed that the emergence percentages in spring (May) were significantly lower than that in fall (September), but the sex ratios did not differ significantly between the two seasons. The emergence asynchrony of parasitoid may be induced by the diapause of species, which is a long-term coevolutional outcome of parasitoid with host for maintaining its population. These findings provided some scientific bases for the rational utilization of this parasitoid in practice.
A Choroidal Schwannoma Confirmed by Surgical Excision

Schwannomas rarely present as intraocular tumors and are often misdiagnosed as malignant melanoma. We describe a choroidal schwannoma confirmed by sclerouvectomy. A 30-year-old woman presented with a large nonpigmented intraocular mass of the choroid in the right eye and underwent surgical excision by sclerouvectomy. Histologically, the tumor was composed of a mixture of cellular solid components (Antoni A) and loose myxoid components (Antoni B). The tumor was eventually diagnosed as a schwannoma. Currently available ancillary studies are still of little value in definitively differentiating schwannomas from other choroidal tumors. In the case of atypical findings for a malignant melanoma, a benign neoplasm should be included in the differential diagnosis. This patient avoided enucleation by first having the mass excised. We are unaware of previous reports in which a choroidal schwannoma was diagnosed by surgical excision.

PURPOSE:: To describe the pathoanatomy of diabetic macular edema in optical coherence tomography and its correlation with fluorescein angiography patterns. METHODS:: Sixty eyes of 56 patients were analyzed. Diabetic macular edema was classified into typical focal leakage (from microaneurysm), typical diffuse leakage (the capillary plexus), or combined/questionable leakage using fluorescein angiography and retinal thickness profiles. The leakage and pooling patterns in fluorescein angiography were matched to the corresponding optical coherence tomography images and analyzed. RESULTS:: Focal leakage shows swelling predominantly in the outer plexiform layer (OPL). Deeply located microaneurysms directly leak into the loose fiber portion of OPL (Henle layer) through the “fluid conductivity barrier” (synaptic portion of OPL). Diffuse leakage caused swelling predominantly in the inner nuclear layer and secondarily in the OPL. The deep capillary plexus is located between the two “fluid barriers” (inner plexiform layer and OPL); thus, diffuse leakage is primarily related with swelling in the inner nuclear layer. In the combined/questionable leakage, partial sections consisting of inner nuclear layer swelling and much larger areas of OPL/outer nuclear layer swelling are noticed. CONCLUSION:: Based on the concept of the fluid conductivity barrier, we revealed a correlation between the intraretinal location of the leakage source and where the fluid accumulated within the retinal layers.

In order to develop materials with a low environmental load for restoring the destroyed forest, seven types of wood-concrete hybrid laminated materials were manufactured with four softwoods, three hardwoods and concrete, and the effect of wood density on bending creep property was investigated. The bending creep curves showed a shape to considerably increase at the upper right side, and the curves were found to show a linear behavior beyond about 30 min - 1 hour, as behaviors of solid woods and wood-based materials. The initial compliances of wood-concrete hybrid-laminated materials decreased with an increase in the wood density, and those values showed 0.9 - 1.2 times of the concrete one. The creep compliances of hybrid laminated materials showed very low values, which were 0.4 - 0.8 times of the concrete ones. The relative creep were very low with a range from 8.2% to 17.0% range, which were 0.3 - 0.7 times of the concrete ones. These results indicate that these materials can be applied for restoring the destroyed forest to reduce creep deformation of the conventional concrete materials by hybrid-laminating concrete and woods.
Carcass and retail meat cuts quality properties of broiler chicken meat based on the slaughter age

This study aimed to determine the carcass and meat quality of broiler chickens based on the slaughter age (28, 30, 32, and 34 days). The carcass characteristics included live and carcass weights, carcass rate, dressing rate, and retail cut weight. The meat quality properties were determined through proximate composition, pH, color, water holding capacity (WHC), cooking yield, and shear-force. The broiler chicken live, carcass, breast, thigh, and wing weights significantly increased with the slaughter age (p < 0.05); the tenderloin weight also exhibited a similarly increasing trend. However, the carcass rate of the day 28 sample was significantly lower than the other samples (p < 0.05). The protein and ash contents of the breast exhibited an increasing trend with increasing slaughter age. The protein content of the thigh of the day 28 sample was significantly lower than that of the other samples (p < 0.05), while the ash contents of the day 28 and 30 samples were significantly lower. The redness of the breast showed an increasing trend, and the pH and lightness of the thigh exhibited a decreasing trend with slaughter age. The WHC and cooking yields of the day 30 and 32 breast and thigh samples were significantly higher than those of the day 28 and 34 samples (p < 0.05). The breast and thigh shear-force of the day 30-34 samples were significantly higher than those of the day 28 sample (p < 0.05). The present study showed that even with a two-day difference in slaughter age, the broiler chicken meat quality showed a significant difference in several characteristics.
