We conducted this study to investigate whether baicalin, baicalein or schizandrin significantly affect MUC5AC mucin production induced by epidermal growth factor (EGF) or phorbol ester (PMA) in human airway epithelial cells. Confluent NCI-H292 cells were pretreated with varying concentrations of baicalin, baicalein or schizandrin for 30 min and then stimulated with EGF or PMA for 24 h, respectively. MUC5AC mucin protein production was measured by ELISA. The results were as follows: (1) Baicalin was found to inhibit the production of MUC5AC mucin protein induced by both EGF and PMA. (2) Baicalein, the aglycone of baicalin, also inhibited MUC5AC mucin production. (3) Schizandrin, derived from Schizandrae Fructus, inhibited MUC5AC mucin production by the same inducers. These results suggest that baicalin, baicalein and schizandrin can regulate the production of mucin protein by directly acting on human airway epithelial cells.

Chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibrousmats were prepared by the electrospinning method. The morphology and structure of electrospun nanofibers were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. SEM images showed that the uniform and bead-free fibers were obtained at concentrations greater than 8 wt%. Chitosan/PVAmats were irradiated with different doses (50–200 kGy) of 60Co gamma rays. The effect of irradiation dose on the mechanical and thermal properties of these films was also investigated. Increasing the irradiation dose led to a decrease in tensile strength. FT-IR and DSC demonstrated that there were strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the chitosan and PVA molecules.

The effects of electron beam radiation on polyimide films were investigated through dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), in which the energy of the electron beam was set to a voltage of 1 MeVand a beam current of 4 mA. The b2 sub-glass relaxation temperature of polyimide decreased with irradiation dose, consisting with formation of free radicals at the ends of the molecular chains. The glass relaxation temperatures are not influenced as a function of increasing electron beam exposure because imide rings prevent structural damage by electron beam irradiation. Furthermore, decomposition temperatures of the irradiated polyimide slightly decrease, from 571.42 to 570.67 8C and the residue weight also decreases.

Background: Although several interventional procedures (IPs) such as epidural sympathetic block and neuromodulation for reducing the acute pain of herpes zoster (HZ) have been indicated to have some level of effectiveness in the prevention of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), no conclusive evidence is present for this issue. Objectives: To examine the efficacy of interventional pain management during the acute phase of HZ (within 14 days after onset of the rash) in preventing PHN Methods: Databases we used included PubMed, SCOPUS and references of retrieved articles from inception to August 2013, with no limits on the study date or language. A total of 1960 literatures were reviewed. Included studies were randomized controlled and cohort trials that compared IPs, which were combined with standard antiviral therapy aiming at preventing PHN, with antiviral therapy only. Studies must have included VAS for pain assessment. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by using Comprehensive Meta Analysis Version 2.0. Results: Five studies of a total of 1413 patients were ultimately included. The results showed IPs combined with antiviral therapy during acute HZ had a preventive effect on the development of PHN over antiviral therapy only at 3 months (ORs 3.28, 95% CIs 1.20 to 8.96; p=0.02) and 6 months (ORs 3.86, 95% CIs 1.25 to 11.89; p=0.02). Conclusion: Current evidence shows that in preventing PHN, interventional pain management can be effective during acute HZ.
