<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Embelin is an active ingredient of traditional herbal remedies for cancer and other diseases. Recently, it has been suggested that autophagy may play an important role in cancer therapy. However, little data are available regarding the role of autophagy in oral cancers. Therefore, we conducted this study to examine whether Embelin modulates autophagy in Ca9‐22. Our results showed that Embelin had anticancer activity against the Ca9‐22 human tongue squamous cell, and we observed that autophagic vacuoles were formed by MDC and AO. We also analyzed Embelin‐treated Ca9‐22 cells for the presence of biochemical markers and found that it directly affected the conversion of LC3‐II, the degradation of p62/SQSTM1, full‐length cleavage formation of ATG5‐ATG12 complex and Beline‐1, and caspase activation. Rescue experiments using an autophagy inhibitor showed Embelin‐induced cell death in Ca9‐22, confirming that autophagy acts as a pro‐death signal. Furthermore, Embelin exhibited anticancer activity against Ca9‐22 via both autophagy and apoptosis. These findings suggest that Embelin may potentially contribute to oral cancer treatment and provide useful information for the development of a new therapeutic agent.</P>
Modafinil‐induced conditioned place preference via dopaminergic system in mice

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Modafinil, a psychostimulant, is used in the treatment of narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder, and excessive daytime sleepiness associated with obstructive sleep apnea. Preclinical and clinical studies suggest that modafinil may have reinforcing effects. However, a possible rewarding property of modafinil has not been fully investigated. In this study, we assessed the potential rewarding property of modafinil using the conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm in mice. Using radiolabeled ligands, we observed changes in dopamine, glutamate, and GABA receptor binding in the brains of mice after treatment with modafinil. Modafinil produced significant CPP in mice at an intraperitoneal (i.p.) dose of 125 mg kg<SUP>−1</SUP> and prevented normal body weight gain of mice in a dose‐dependent manner. A significant reduction in normal body weight gain was observed when mice were administrated 125 mg kg<SUP>−1</SUP> modafinil. In addition, there were widespread changes in receptor binding in the brains of modafinil‐treated mice; Dopamine D<SUB>1</SUB> binding was increased in the caudate putamen, the accumbens, and the substantia nigra, while dopamine D<SUB>2</SUB> binding was decreased in the caudate putamen and the accumbens. Dopamine transporter (DAT) binding was increased in the prefrontal cortex, the caudate putamen, and the nucleus accumbens. No changes were observed in NMDA and GABA<SUB>A</SUB> receptor binding. These data indicate that modafinil had a significant rewarding property and could be abused as a recreational drug. Dopamine systems may play a key role in the rewarding property of modafinil. <P>On page 5433, Yong‐Young Noh, Antonio Facchetti, Kang‐Jun Baeg, and co‐workers report that high performance ambipolar complementary inverters and ring oscillators are provided by a remarkable enhancement of both hole injection and transport for n‐channel dominant N2200 OFETs. The significant enhancement of hole mobility in N2200 OTFTs is attributed to the strong dipoles in fluorinated high‐k gate dielectric blend of P(VDF‐TrFE):PMMA. </P>

<P><B>A remarkable enhancement of p‐channel properties</B> is achieved in initially n‐channel dominant ambipolar P(NDI2OD‐T2) organic field‐effect transistors (OFETs) by the use of the fluorinated high‐k dielectric P(VDF‐TrFE). An almost two orders of magnitude increase in hole mobility (∼0.11 cm<SUP>2</SUP> V<SUP>−1</SUP> s<SUP>−1</SUP>) originates from a strong interface modification at the semiconductor/dielectric interface, which provides high‐performance complementary‐like inverters and ring oscillator circuits.</P>

<P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P>The empirical relationships used to estimate rainfall amounts from polarimetric radar observations were developed and tested by using long‐period drop size distribution (DSD) data and monitoring of rainfall events prior to operational use in Korea. Rainfall associated with Typhoon Meari in 2011 was selected to assess the performance of these relationships for point and areal rainfall amounts. Data quality was checked in regions of light rain to enable the quantitative use of polarimetric variables. The distributions of the cross‐correlation co‐efficient and standard deviation of the differential phase shift agreed with those established in a previous study, but the absolute average deviation of differential reflectivity (<I>Z<SUB>DR</SUB></I>) was a little distorted. Biases in reflectivity (<I>Z</I>) and differential reflectivity were calculated following established methods and found to be –0.18 and 0.47 dB, respectively. The accuracy of rainfall amounts calculated from <I>R(K<SUB>DP</SUB>)</I> and <I>R(K<SUB>DP</SUB>, Z<SUB>DR</SUB>)</I> was poor. The best estimates of rainfall were obtained using <I>R(Z, Z<SUB>DR</SUB>)</I> based on DSDs from Oklahoma (OKC) in the USA and Busan (BSC) for both the point and areal mean cases. Correlation co‐efficients of <I>R(Z, Z<SUB>DR</SUB>)</I> using the BSC DSDs were better than those using the OKC DSDs for areal mean rainfall amounts. Rainfall amounts in this particular case in Korea were estimated more accurately using the Brandes drop shape for <I>R(Z, Z<SUB>DR</SUB>)</I> than the equilibrium drop shape.</P>
Amodiaquine improves insulin resistance and lipid metabolism in diabetic model mice

<P>Conclusion: Our findings suggest that amodiaquine exerts beneficial effects on glucose and lipid metabolism by concurrent activation of PPAR alpha/gamma. Furthermore, amodiaquine acts as an alternative insulin-sensitizing agent with a positive influence on lipid metabolism and has potential to prevent and treat type 2 diabetes while reducing the risk of lipid abnormalities.</P>
