        Architectural Modernity in the Planning of Japanese Overseas Exhibitions in the West and the Colonized Korea

        So far, the Japanese exhibitions in the colonized Korea, especially the Joseon Industrial Exhibition of 1915, haven't been studied sufficiently; they have been understood mainly as political propaganda to legitimize the Japanese colonization of the Korean peninsula; many scholars have agreed that Japan highlighted material developments in Korea under the benevolent guidance of Japan by displaying strong visual contrasts between the modern and the traditional. So, they only acknowledge colonial modernity; this perspective regards Western forms as the sole expression of architectural modernity, not only in the exhibition but also in the colonial space and time. However, to be on a par with the West, Japan started to develop a series of historical narratives in searching for its historical origins in Asia, and it also carried out archaeological investigations in the Korean peninsula around the early 1900s. I argue that the developed historical narratives with traditional Korean artworks and architecture (i.e. the shared historical origins between Japan and Korea) influence the architectural conditions of the 1915 exhibition. And, the status of traditional Korean architecture in the Japanese exhibition expresses architectural modernity in terms of showing historical progress.

        Wajiro Kon's Architectural Theory on the Development of Korean Minka and Its Limitations, 1923-24

        This paper focuses on Wajiro Kon (1888-1973) and his architectural efforts on theorizing Korean minka in the early 1920s. Wajiro Kon's unique phenomenological approach, so different from the positivistic analyses of his contemporaries, evident in his meticulous sketches and vivid descriptions, helped him theorize how the craft-oriented architectural development of Korean minka were shaped by people's everyday lives. In particular, he found that ondol had developed in various and complex ways, creating differences between the northern and southern Korean regions. Moreover, Kon identified the practical improvements in Korean minka made by inventive, creative people. However, the paper demonstrates that in this process, the new understanding retained the dual perspective of Korean minka as not only environmentally formulated, craft-oriented artifacts but also as re-formed objects that should be improved through an interplay with external factors.

        고속도로 인근 유휴부지의 지속 가능한 활용을 위한 사례연구

        탈산업화 사회에서는 새로운 개발 패러다임의 영향력이토지 이용에 대한 공익과 경제적 효율성을 추구하면서증가하고 있다. 특히 교통 기반 시설과 관련한 유휴지개발은 토지의 의미 있는 이용과 공간의 효율적 재활용이라는 측면에서 더욱 주목받고 있다. 그러나 한국에서지속 가능한 토지 이용의 가능성을 발견하기 위한 연구는 매우 미흡하다. 따라서 본 연구는 유럽과 한국의 사례를 중심으로 한 국제 사례연구를 통해 고속도로에서의유휴공간 활용유형과 향후 관행에 대한 교훈을 위치와시설의 맥락에 따라 분류하는 방법을 연구한다. 22개의국내 및 유럽 사례를 조사한 결과, 고속도로에서 유휴공간을 활용 한 사례는 신재생 에너지 설비의 이용, 생태산림 개발 계획, 휴면 지역의 복합 개발 및 다차원 개발의 네 가지 유형으로 분류할 수 있었다. 이러한 유형 모두는 기존의 단일 차원 토지 이용을 넘어 현대 사회 및문화적 필요를 반영하는 다기능의 개념을 포함한다. 본연구는 전통적으로 공간과 관련된 분야인 도시, 건축, 토목, 조경뿐만 아니라 과학과 문화를 아우르는 다양한 분야의 협업이 중요하다는 것을 강조한다. In the post-industrialization society, the influence of the new development paradigm has been increasing in pursuit of public interest and economic efficiency in the utilization of the land. Especially, the development of idle land related to transportation infrastructure is getting more attention in terms of meaningful use of the land and recycling space efficiently. However, there has been little research made to discover the possibilities of sustainable land use in Korea. Therefore, this paper examines how to classify types of utilization of idle space on the highway and the lessons for the future practices according to the context of location and facilities through an international case study particularly on European and Korean examples. As a result of surveying 22 domestic and European cases, the cases of utilizing idle space on highway could be categorized into four types: utilization of renewable energy facilities, ecological forest development plan, combined development of rest area, and multi-dimensional development. All of these types involve the idea of multi-functionality that reflects contemporary social and cultural needs beyond the existing single-dimensional land use. This study highlights that the importance of collaboration between diverse fields such as ecology, energy, culture, and art is essential as well as construction related fields such as urban planning, architecture, civil engineering, and landscape architecture.
