The researchers value judgements are inevitably involved in the process of selecting indicators and calculating the index. To complement these problems, the paper introduced the decline index D. The decline index D is defined as the population growth rate compared to urban-land growth rate. If the index is negative, the city is classified into a declining city. The city-classification based on the index D showed 85% concordance rate with the results of the Urban Renewal Agency(2010), and the correlation between them was 0.7875. The plausibility of index D was also supported by several key indicators including financial independence rate. The high explanatory power of the index D might be attributed to the unique nature of Korean cities, that is, extensive suburban development. However, the decline index D is simple to calculate, unit-free and value-free, so it could be useful complement to the multiple decline index.

이 논문은 압축도시 관점에서, 우리나라 7대 광역시의 74개 자치구의 교통에너지 사용량과 도시개발밀도의 관계 속에서 적정 도시개발밀도를 도출하고, 이를 바탕으로 향후 도시계획에 정책적 함의를 제시하였다. 이원고정효과모형을 사용하여 분석한 결과, 자치구의 적정 개발밀도는 순밀도 기준으로 528명/ha, 총밀도 기준으로 220명/ha로 나타났다. 순밀도 기준으로 2011년 현재 인천 부평구를 비롯한 서울의 8개 자치구, 총밀도 기준으로는 서울의 4개 자치구가 적정 개발밀도를 초과한 것으로 나타났다. 이를 바탕으로 정책적 함의를 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 적정 개발밀도를 초과한 자치구가 소수로 나타남에 따라 대다수의 자치구는 압축적 도시개발 방식이 여전히 유용한 것으로 평가되었다. 둘째, 실증적으로 도출된 적정 개발밀도가 앞으로 광역시 자치구의 도시개발에 있어서 중요한 준거로 적극 활용할 필요가 있다. 셋째, 지나친 도시 과밀화로 압축도시의 역효과가 나타나지 않도록 다양한 도시정책 수단들이 함께 고려되어야 한다. From a Compact city perspective, this paper analyzes the relationship between urban density and gasoline consumption using the data of 74 autonomous districts of the 7 metropolitan cities. Also the paper draws the optimum urban density levels and urban development policy implications. As of 2011, 8 districts of Seoul and Incheon Bupyeong-gu exceed the optimum net density level, and 4 districts of Seoul exceed the optimum gross density level. Based on this, policy implications are as follows. First, a compact urban development approach is still useful for most of districts because only a few districts exceed the threshold density level. Second, the optimum urban density empirically derived in this paper should be used actively as important criteria for urban development policy in the future. Third, various urban policy measures should be considered together in order to avoid adverse effects of compact city.

The paper proposes the compact-urbanization economies as a strategy of urban regeneration for small and medium cities. The strategy of compact-urbanization economies is to generate the growth engine from the inside of city by redesigning a city more densely. Encouraging intensification of the existing built-up areas could make a city lively, boosting the city’s economic growth potential like increasing productivity and creating jobs. In order to test the proposed strategy, an empirical analysis is carried out using the 2000-2010 annual data on 43 small and medium cities. The results show that net population density is positively related with per capita income and financial independence rate. For instance it is estimated that an increase of 1,000 persons per square kilometer increases them by 2,892,255 won and 4.7% respectively.
국민환경의식에 대한 실증적 분석 : Empirical Analysis

In this paper, we analyze a rather vaguely-defined concept of environmental consciousness by examining causal association among sub-concepts that constitute environmental consciousness; environmental concern, environmental policy evaluation, and environmental practice. An empirical research is conducted on Korean Ministry of Environment's 2000 survey. It was found that environmental concern and environmental practice were highly correlated. While environmental policy evaluation did not show any significant relationship with them, it depended heavily on regime-intimacy instead. Socio-economic factors showed different effects on sub-concepts. Elder and more-educated people showed more environmental concern while female and elderly people were more active on environmental practice. These findings are different from foreign studies, which may suggest that our environmental movement could be understood quite differently from their experience.

The vector wave equation is widely used in electromagnetic wave analysis. This paper solves the vector wave equation using curl-conforming finite elements. The variational problem is established from Riesz functional based on vector wave equation and the unique existence of weak solution is explored. The edge elements are used in computation and the simulation results are compared with those obtained from a commercial simulator, ANSYS HFSS (high-frequency structure simulator).

<P>Upon screening synthetic small molecule libraries with the infectious hepatitis C virus (HCV) cell culture system, we identified a benzothiazepinecarboxamide (BTC) scaffold that inhibits HCV. A structure-activity relationship (SAR) study with BTC5 was performed, and modifications that led to nanomolar antiviral activity and improved the selective index (CC50/EC50) by more than 1000-fold were identified. In addition, a pharmacophore modeling study determined that the tricyclic core and positive charge on the piperidine moiety were essential for antiviral activity. Furthermore, we demonstrated that BTC interferes with HCV glycoprotein E1/E2-mediated viral entry and the generation of infectious virions by using HCV pseudoparticle and cell culture supernatant transfer assays, respectively. BTC showed potent antiviral activity against HCV genotype 2 (EC50 = 0.01 +/- 0.01 mu M), but was less potent against a genotype 1/2 chimeric virus (EC50 = 2.71 +/- 0.05 mu M), which expressed the structural proteins of HCV genotype 1.
