The wind data measured from automated weather stations (AWS) at complex terrains in Korea was used to predict the wind velocity at nearby sites that are several kilometers away. The ten-minute averaged wind data was measured at a height of 10 meters. A commercial CFD code, WindSIM, based on the weighted averaged Navier-Stokes equation was employed. The results were compared with the data measured using meteorological masts (MM) at a height of 40 meters. The predictions using the AWS data and WindSIM showed good agreements with the measured data.

To detemine seasonal fluctuations in abundance and speices composition, polychaete samples were collected by Van Veen grab form March to November 2003 in Kangjin Bay. A total of 25,119.3 ind./㎡ polycaete were sampled and identified into 48 species. 25 families and 10 orders. Of the 10 orders. Phllodocida, Spionida, Eunicida and Sabellida accounted for approximately 79.9% of the polychaete fauna in this area. Phyllodocida, Nereidae, Nephtyidae ans Spionidae were dominant representing every moment 4 species. Of 48 species identified Neanthes japonica, Prionospio pinnate, Cirratulus cirratus and Palola siciliensis for 54.0% individuals collected. Season succession of dominant species was evident in study area: Neanthes japonica, Prionospio pinnata. Cirratulus cirratus. Nephtys oligobranchia in March, Neanthes japonica, Lumbrineris japonica. Cirratulus cirratus, Prionospio pinnata in May, Ncanthes japonica, Cirratulus cirratus, Lumbrineris nippnica. Lumbrineris japonica in August and Neanthes japonica, Prionospio pinnata, Laonice cirrata, Palola siciliensis in November, respectively. The diversity index was the highest value in March(H'=3.0059) and the lowest value in May(H'=2.7305). The eveness index was the highest in August(J=0.9184) and lowest in May(J=0.8524). The dominance index was the highest in May(D=0.3843) and the lowest in March(D=0.2275).

This study was designed to evaluate gencral features related to allergy of allergic patients living in northern and western Chungchungnamdo, visited to an allergic unit in Soonchunhyang University Chunan Hospital during August 1998 to July 2000. Three hundred allergic patients were enrolled. Among them, 87.7% were outpatients and were analysed for the study. Demographic variables as well as resident living conditions and immunologic results were assessed. Overall IgE, house dust, Dermatophagoides farinae (Df), and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dp) antibody were assessed using MAST-CLA in 263 outpatients. Relations between allergens and age, sex, and living conditions were evaluated by chi-square tests. Mean age was 21.0 ± 17.3 year-old and male accounted for 59.3% in total subjects. Among them, 52.0% lived in an apartment and 65.3% were from urban area near Chunan and Asan city. Admission rate of allergic patients was 12.3%. The positive rates of total IgE, house dust, Df, and Dp were in 55.1%. 19.0%, 30.0%, and 29.3% in outpatients, respectively. No significant relations between allergens and sex. living home, and region were observed (P>0.05). Adolescents showed significantly higher positive rate of total IgE (P=0.02). Our data suggested that residential environment may not be a significant factor of main causative allergens in northern and western Chungchungnamdo. However more controlled study should be required to elucidate the relations between living environments and major causative allergens in this area.

To evaluate usefulness of application of MAST-CLA to indetify allergens, authors conducted MAST-CLA allergen-specific IgE assay and collected allergy related symptoms in 118 allergic patients diagnosed at Soonchunhyang University Chunan Hospital during October 1998 through January 2000. The results were as followings; 1. The mean (SD) age was 23.1 (±12.17) years old and teenagers accounted for 33.1% of patients. 2. The frequent allergic symptoms were sneezing (59.3%), rhinorrhea (53.4%), nasal stiffness (44.1%), itching sensation (24.6%), cough or sputum (16.1%), and eye symptom (8.5%) in order. 3. Among these subjects, 62.7% of patients revealed at least more than one specific allergen and 70.3% showed elevated total IgE levels by MAST-CLA. The three most frequent specific allergens were Dermatophagoides farinae (47.5%), Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (45.8%), and house dust (30.5%). 4. While age was not significantly related to positive of both specific allergens and total IgE (P>0.05), sneezing and nasal stiffness were significantly associated with positive of specific allergen and total IgE, respectively (both P<0.05). 5. Total IgE increased with the number of specific allergens, but both specific allergen and total IgE were not significantly related to increases of allergic symptoms (P>0.05). In conclusion, our data suggest that MAST-CLA allergen-specific IgE assay is useful measure for identification of causative allergens in allergic patients, however, it is recommended that more specific allergic antigens should be determined and replaced or added to Korean inhalent panel of MAST-CLA.

Simulations using two well-known commercial codes, WAsP and WindSIM, were performed to predict the wind resources in complex terrains of Korea. The predictions from the codes were compared with the measured data. Cross predictions were performed for two closely located measurement sites. The results from WindSIM were found to be more accurate than those from WAsP. The predictions for wind velocity and direction in five different sites of complex terrain from WAsP and WindSIM were also compared. It was found that if the self prediction of the wind velocity and direction from WAsP is close to the measured wind data, the discrepancies between WAsP results and WindSIM results are also close.

The results were compared with the data measured using meteorological masts (MM) at heights of 30 to 50 meters installed for this study. The predictions using the AWS data and WindSIM showed good agreements with the measured data. The results are expected to be useful to find out a spot to install a meteorological mast for future wind farm development in complex terrain.

In this paper, new control algorithms of SFC systems for starting gas turbo sets are proposed for a four quadrant operation: start-up at standstill; an acceleration up to the speed of the rated voltage; field weakening to reach the rated speed; synchronization to the main alternating current (AC) source; and dynamic braking to stop safely within the rating of the synchronous machine. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithms are proper and effective.

Selenium salts are toxic in large amounts, however, trace amounts are necessary for cellular function in many organisms, including all animals. Selenium is a component of the antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase (which indirectly reduce certain oxidized molecules in animals and some plants), sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) possesses a number of biological activities, especially in improvement of cell growth. However, few studies on the effects of sodium silicate and selenium on an immune system have been reported so far. The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effect of soluble sodium silicate/Se on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory response in RAW264.7 cells. The production of nitric oxide (NO) and proinflammatory cytokines was examined in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. The cells were cultured in Dulbecco`s modified Eagle`s medium (DMEM). Concentration of 10 ppm or less of soluble sodium silicate/Se had no cytotoxic effect on RAW264.7 cells. The soluble sodium silicate/Se decreased LPS-induced production of NO but did not affect the levels of TNF-α, IL-2, and IFN-γ in RAW264.7 cells In addition, the sodium silicate/Se induced up regulation of IL-1β level in a does-dependent manner. These results suggest that the soluble sodium silicate/Se has a synergistic effect in down-regulation of inflammatory response in vitro.
