      • 바이오매스로부터 생산한 바이오차에 의한 수질오염물질 흡착 : Adsorption of Water Pollution by Biochar Produced from Biomass

        Biochar is produced from lignocellulosic biomass (wood, agricultural and forestry waste, etc.) through thermal decomposition at high temperature. Water pollution (pesticides, dyes, heavy metals, and volatile organic compounds [VOCs]) can be efficiently removed by biochar. In particular, waste biomass is typically used as fuel or thrown away; thus, it is necessary to determine a valuable utilization for it. The process of biochar production is simple and suitable for the production of porous structures. In this paper, 1) biochar production and its characteristics based on biomass types, 2) research trends on the adsorption of water pollution (pesticides, dyes, heavy metals, VOCs) on biochar, and 3) expected effects are discussed.

        축구선수의 Detraining과 Retraining이 혈청지질 및 호르몬농도에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of detraining and retraining on serum lipid and hormones in soccer players. Subjects were seven male high-school soccer players. V˙O_2max was determined for each subjects by administering a treadmill test(initial speed: 90m/min, grade: 5%, increasing speed per 3 min: 30m/min). Serum lipid(T-C, TG, HDL-C LDL-C) and hormones(epinephrine, norepinephrine, growth hormones, cortisol) were assayed pre and post detraining in 10, 20, 30 days after retraining. The repeated ANOVA was used to determine significant differences. The 0.05 level of significance was as critical level for the study. The results of the study were as follows: 1. V˙O_2max(ml/min) were 3576.3±204.2ml/min pre detraining, 3234.1±198.9 ml/min post detraining. There are significant(p<.05) difference between pre and post detraining. In 10, 20, 30 days after retraining, V˙O_2max(ml/min) were 3601.4±170.9 ml/min. There were significantly(p<.05) increased in retraining periods. 2. V˙O_2max(ml/kg/min) were significantly(p<.05) decreased from 62.3±2.9 ml/kg/min to 55.9±4.7 ml/kg/min in detraining. In 10, 20, 30 days after retraining, V˙O_2max(ml/kg/min) were 62.4±3.4ml/kg/min, 62.7±2.3ml.kg/min, 67.3±7.2ml/kg/min respectively. There were significantly(p<.05) increased in retraining periods. 3. T-C were significantly (p<.05) increased from 166.6±8.5mg/dl to 175.3±10.3 mg/dl in detraining. In 10, 20, 30 days after retraining, T-C were 160.1± 3.2mg/dl, 156.7±3.7mg/dl, 140.3±9.0mg/dl. There were significantly(p<.05) decreased in retraining periods. 4. HDL-C were 61.4±6.6mg/di pre detraining, 5.3±6.6mg/dl post detraining. There are significant(p<.05) difference between pre and post detraining. In 10, 20, 30 days after retraining, HDL-C were 56.9±7.1mg/dl, 56.4±9.2mg/dl, 57.7±9.1mg/dl respectively. There were no significant difference in retraining periods. 5. The hormones(epinephrine. norepinephrine, growth hormone, cortisol) were changed as same patterns. Epinephrine were 26.0±7.0[g/ml pre detraining, 24.6±3.2pg/ml post detraining. In 10, 20, 30 days after retraining, epinephrine were 26.9±5.6pg/ml, 30.6±6.2pg/ml, 29.4±5.6pg/ml respectively. There were no significant difference in retraining periods. In conclusion, HDL-C, epinephrine, norepinephrine, growth hormone and cortisol were decreased, T-C, LDL-C and TG were increased in detraining. But HDL-C, epinephrine, norepinephrine, growth hormone and cortisol were increased, T-C, LDL-C and TG were decreased in retraining.

        Insulin resistance mediates high-fat diet-induced pulmonary fibrosis and airway hyperresponsiveness through the TGF-β1 pathway

        <▼1><P>Prior studies have reported the presence of lung fibrosis and enhanced airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in mice with high-fat-diet (HFD)-induced obesity. This study evaluated the role of TGF-β1 in HFD-induced AHR and lung fibrosis in a murine model. We generated HFD-induced obesity mice and performed glucose and insulin tolerance tests. HFD mice with or without ovalbumin sensitization and challenge were also treated with an anti-TGF-β1 neutralizing antibody. AHR to methacholine, inflammatory cells in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and histological features were evaluated. Insulin was intranasally administered to normal diet (ND) mice, and in vitro insulin stimulation of BEAS-2b cells was performed. HFD-induced obesity mice had increased insulin resistance, enhanced AHR, peribronchial and perivascular fibrosis, and increased numbers of macrophages in the BALF. However, they did not have meaningful eosinophilic or neutrophilic inflammation in the lungs compared with ND mice. The HFD enhanced TGF-β1 expression in the bronchial epithelium, but we found no differences in the expression of interleukin (IL)−4 or IL-5 in lung homogenates. Administration of the anti-TGF-β1 antibody attenuated HFD-induced AHR and lung fibrosis. It also attenuated goblet cell hyperplasia, but did not affect the AHR and inflammatory cell infiltration induced by OVA challenge. The intranasal administration of insulin enhanced TGF-β1 expression in the bronchial epithelium and lung fibrosis. Stimulating BEAS-2b cells with insulin also increased TGF-β1 production by 24 h. We concluded that HFD-induced obesity-associated insulin resistance enhances TGF-β1 expression in the bronchial epithelium, which may play an important role in the development of lung fibrosis and AHR in obesity.</P></▼1><▼2><P><B>Obesity: A trigger for asthma onset</B></P><P>Insulin resistance may be an important causative factor underlying the increased risk of asthma and other respiratory issues in obese individuals. Obesity doubles the likelihood of developing asthma, with symptoms that are more difficult to control than in non-obese patients. The connection between these conditions is poorly understood, but researchers led by Jung-Won Park, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea, have identified a potential mechanism. They demonstrated that a signaling molecule called TGF-β1 contributes to airway sensitivity and tissue scarring in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity. Subsequent experiments showed that treatment with insulin also gives rise to increased TGF-β1 production in the mouse lung. Since insulin resistance is a common feature of obesity, resulting in abnormally high levels of circulating insulin, this could also account for the increased risk of respiratory problems.</P></▼2>

        유용성 도료와 수용성 도료의 유해성 비교에 관한 연구 : 자동차 보수용 도료를 중심으로

        The purpose of this study is to substitute water-based painting materials for the current solvent-based ones used in motor-repairing process to minimize the exposure of organic solvents to the painters. This study assessed the exposure of organic solvents to the painters using water-based and solvent-based painting materials and compared compositions, painting processes and the health hazards of the application of these alternative painting materials. The results of this study are as follows. 1. solvent-based painting materials used in motor-repairing process consist of various organic solvents, which consist primarily of toluene, xylene, ethyl benzene, ethyl methyl bezene, trimethyl bezene, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, methyl isobutyl ketone, 2-ethoxy ethanol, 2-ethoxy ethyl acetate and toluene-2.4-diisocianate and the others. These organic solvents are know as health-hazardous substances. But water-based painting materials are high-solid, low-solvent ones and consist of such two organic solvents as 2-butoxy ethanol and 2-heptanone and the others. 2. The painters using solvent-based painting materials in motor-repairing process are exposed to various organic acetate, methyl isobutyl ketone, trimethyl benzene, 2-ethoxy ethanol, and 2-ethoxy ethyl acetate. But the painters using solvent-based ones are only exposed to 2-butoxy ethanol and 2-heptanone. 3. By using water-based painting materials in stead of solvent-based painting materials containing health-hazardous organic solvents, the exposure of such organic solvents in the painter's breathing zone can be largely prevented. 4. This study recommends water-based painting materials as substitutes for the current solvent-based ones used in motor-repairing process to minimize the exposure of organic solvents to the painters.

      • 인터넷을 이용한 영양교육 프로그램 개발

        The purpose of this study was to develop nutrition education program via internet and evaluate the response of this nutrition education program. For this study, nutrition education media via internet was developed with CGI program. And also to evaluate this program, a survey was conducted with 127 students who lived in Taejon. This survey carried out in May, 1999. This nutrition education program : Step 1 shows one's physical status. Step 2 shows good food habits. Step 3 shows requirement of calorie for weight control, high calorie foods, low calorie foods, recipes to reduce calorie and calorie of fast foods. Step 4 shows methods of exercise for health. Step 5 help to maintain normal weight. Step 6 provides internet site related with obesity. The result of this survey is summarized as follow; Most of the subjects answered this program was very useful(35.4%) or useful(50.4%). By using this information, they could increase their knowledge of nutrition(96.1%), change their food attitude(87.2%) and increase the practice capability of meal management(76.2%). Therefore, internet nutrition education program should be developed much more.

      • 개의 아토피 피부염에 대한 Leflunomide의 임상적 적용 1례

        A Shih-tzu(8-year-old, castrated male) was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University with the history of relapsing pruritus, recurrent dermatitis. On the physical examination, generalized erythema, otitis externa, alopecia and lichenification were observed. Using Favrot's criteria for diagnishing atopic dermatitis, 7 criteria were satisfied out of 8 criteria. After treatment for infection, intradermal skin test was performed(positive allergen : Df, Dp). And then immunotherapy was performed, but clinical signs were not getting better. Next treatment of glucocorticoid shown little improvement of clinical signs, and adverse effect(diarrhea) was shown after cyclosporine application. So application of leflunomide which is used for human atopic dermatitis treatment in some case was planned. After 6 months of application of leflunomide, clinical signs were decreased gradually.

      • Benzo(a)pyrene에 의해 유도된 간기능 장해에 미치는 쑥의 효과

        Mugwort has been used as a Korean folk medicine in treating liver diseases acting as an analgesics, sedative, diuresis, choleretics. This study was perfomed to evaluate the effect of mugwort extracts on the changes of enzyme activities, lipid accumulation of the serum and liver, when hepatotoxicity was induced by benzo(a)pyrene. The results are as follows: 1. Mugwort water extract administration prevented the increase of serum and liver AST, ALT, LDH, γ-GTP, liver ALP activities and bilirubin content caused by B(a)P injection. 2. The increase of serum and liver ALT, LDH, γ-GTP, serum AST activities and liver bilirubin contents in B(a)P treated group were decreased by mugwort methanol extract treatment. 3. Serum and liver total cholesterol, phospholipid, triglyceride level and serum HDL-cholesterol level were increased by B(a)P treatment. After combined treatment of mugwort water and methanul extracts, these lipid content were significantly decreased. 4. The hepatotropic effect of mugwort water extract and after-treatment against B(a)P induced hepatotoxicity was superior to that of methanol extract and pretreatment.

        장내의 탄수화물과 지방 흡수 억제를 통한 체지방 및 비만 개선 효과에 관한 연구

        In a previous study, a dietary supplement was developed in our lab using natural herbal extracts against digest enzyme activity in GI tract for weight control. This natural herbal extracts could regulate absorption of glucose and lipid by the inhibition of digest enzyme activity. In this study, we screened the natural herbs that inhibit glucoamylase activity and developed an water extract of cinnamon. The cinnamon extract delayed and decreased the increment of carbohydrate degradation through the inhibition of glucoamylase activity in vitro. Fifty volunteers were subjected to the intake of the herbal extracts by taking twice a day for 60 days. As a result, the treated subjects lost 3kg of body weight and 3.5kg of body fat mass after the treatment. Furthermore, the body mass index and waist size were significantly decreased during the experimental period. Above results suggested that the administration of the dietary additives composed of cinnamon and natural herbal extract improves the obesity by the decrement of body weight and body fat mass.
