<P>We investigated the dependence of the reflection spectrum of the polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC) on the length of the diacrylate and the monoacrylate reactive mesogen (RM) molecules. The reflection bandwidth, the reflection center wavelength, and the peak reflectance of the PSCLC with a short diacrylate and a monoacrylate RM were similar to those of the pure cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC). When a longer diacrylate RM was used, the specular reflection bandwidth was broadened and the reflection center wavelength was shifted to the longer wavelength region. When a longer monoacrylate RM was used, a smaller specular reflectance and a greater diffusional reflectance from the top substrate were observed. (C) 2017 The Japan Society of Applied Physics</P>
Small hypoxia-primed mesenchymal stem cells attenuate graft-versus-host disease

<P>Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are of particular interest for the treatment of immune-related diseases due to their immunosuppressive capacity. Here, we show that Small MSCs primed with Hypoxia and Calcium ions (SHC-MSCs) exhibit enhanced stemness and immunomodulatory functions for treating allogeneic conflicts. Compared with naïve cultured human umbilical cord blood-derived MSCs, SHC-MSCs were resistant to passage-dependent senescence mediated via the monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and p53/p21 cascade and secreted large amounts of pro-angiogenic and immunomodulatory factors, resulting in suppression of T-cell proliferation. SHC-MSCs showed DNA demethylation in pluripotency, germline, and imprinted genes similarly to very small embryonic-like stem cells, suggesting a potential mutual relationship. Genome-wide DNA methylome and transcriptome analyses indicated that genes related to immune modulation, cell adhesion, and the cell cycle were up-regulated in SHC-MSCs. Particularly, polo-like kinase-1 (<I>PLK1</I>), zinc-finger protein-143, dehydrogenase/reductase-3, and friend-of-GATA2 play a key role in the beneficial effects of SHC-MSCs. Administration of SHC-MSCs or <I>PLK1</I>-overexpressing MSCs significantly ameliorated symptoms of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in a humanized mouse model, resulting in significantly improved survival, less weight loss, and reduced histopathologic injuries in GVHD target organs compared with naïve MSC-infused mice. Collectively, our findings suggest that SHC-MSCs can improve the clinical treatment of allogeneic conflicts, including GVHD.</P>

<P>This paper focuses on real-time walking pattern generation for humanoid robots with linear inverted pendulum model (LIPM). In general, there are many issues in generating proper walking patterns of center of mass and zero moment point (ZMP) with the LIPM since the LIPM has two drawbacks such as instability and non-minimum phase property. For resolving these difficulties, the paper proposes a new real-time approach by combining a feedback and a feedforward controller. The feedback controller employs a pole placement method which shifts the poles of the LIPM in order to improve system stability. The feedforward controller utilizes advanced pole-zero cancelation by series approximation method (APZCSA) for reducing non-minimum phase property which occurs by an unstable zero and is not able to be dealt with by the feedback controller. In addition, the APZCSA improves the tracking error induced by finite series approximation. Using the two controllers, the proposed method makes the transfer function of overall walking pattern generation system approximately unity and consequently generates a stable walking pattern which follows a desired ZMP according to walking path. The efficiency of the proposed method is verified by walking pattern planning examples and experiments with the humanoid robot MAHRU-R.</P>
