      • Characterization of cricket song patterns and the behavior observation of Teleogryllus emma (Orthoptera:Grylloidea)

        Ji Chang Woo,Kim Nam-Jung,Lee Sang-Guei,Hwang-Yong Kim,Choi Hoon-Sik,Song In-Sun,Ko Jee Sun 한국응용곤충학회 2010 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2010 No.05

We analyzed the chirp sound and behavior of Teleogryllus emma with observation system, which was consisted of computer, ccd-camera and microphone. Computational methods of wavelet transformation and Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) were utilized to characterized the chirp sound of insect species for automatic counting in this study. Wavelets were initially applied to feature extraction of the chirp sound. Wavelet coefficients were accordingly calculated based on the basis function (e.g., Morlet). The obtained coefficients were subsequently provided to count number of chirps in each song. Sound structure of insect specimens consisted with long chirp and short chirp and the patterns of song were grouped by frequency of long chirp and short chirp. The song patterns of insect specimens were divided by Self-Organizing Map (SOM) that was used number of chirp as input data. Application of computational methods to automatic detection of chirp sound was further discussed for obtaining objective assessment in behavior science.

Unilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy after mild COVID-19: a case report

Sang Jae Lee,Si Youn Song,Hyung Gyun Na,Chang Hoon Bae,Yong-Dae Kim,Yoon Seok Choi 제주대학교 의과학연구소 2023 The Journal of Medicine and Life Science Vol.20 No.2

Post-acute coronavirus disease (COVID-19) syndrome is defined as persistent symptoms or delayed complications after COVID-19. Several cases of cranial nerve invasion related to COVID-19 have been reported. However, to our knowledge, no cases of solitary unilateral hypoglossal nerve paralysis after mild COVID-19 without intubation have been reported to date. Herein, we report the case of a 64-year-old man with unilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy as a complication of COVID-19. He complained of dysarthria and tongue discomfort 2 weeks after COVID-19 onset. Brain and neck computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasonography, and blood tests ruled out other possible causes. The patient’s nerve palsy was rapidly diagnosed and improved with early rehabilitation. Understanding of the pathology of COVID-19 is still limited. Physicians should focus on patients’ symptoms and their relationship to COVID-19, and investigate complications immediately. This case highlights the importance of early detection and rehabilitation of post-acute COVID-19 syndrome.

Effects of Mg Suppressor Layer on the InZnSnO Thin-Film Transistors

        Song, Chang-Woo,Kim, Kyung-Hyun,Yang, Ji-Woong,Kim, Dae-Hwan,Choi, Yong-Jin,Hong, Chan-Hwa,Shin, Jae-Heon,Kwon, Hyuck-In,Song, Sang-Hun,Cheong, Woo-Seok The Institute of Electronics and Information Engin 2016 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.16 No.2

We investigate the effects of magnesium (Mg) suppressor layer on the electrical performances and stabilities of amorphous indium-zinc-tin-oxide (a-ITZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs). Compared to the ITZO TFT without a Mg suppressor layer, the ITZO:Mg TFT exhibits slightly smaller field-effect mobility and much reduced subthreshold slope. The ITZO:Mg TFT shows improved electrical stabilities compared to the ITZO TFT under both positive-bias and negative-bias-illumination stresses. From the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy O1s spectra with fitted curves for ITZO and ITZO:Mg films, we observe that Mg doping contributes to an enhancement of the oxygen bond without oxygen vacancy and a reduction of the oxygen bonds with oxygen vacancies. This result shows that the Mg can be an effective suppressor in a-ITZO TFTs.

The predictors of sustained virological response with sofosbuvir and ribavirin in patients with chronic hepatitis C genotype 2

( Sung Yong Han ),( Hyun Young Woo ),( Jeong Heo ),( Sang Gyu Park ),( Sung Ik Pyeon ),( Young Joo Park ),( Dong Uk Kim ),( Gwang Ha Kim ),( Hyung Hoi Kim ),( Geun Am Song ),( Mong Cho ) 대한내과학회 2021 The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine Vol.36 No.3

Background/Aims: Real-world, clinical practice data are lacking about sofosbuvir/ ribavirin (SOF/RBV) treatment of Korean patients with hepatitis C virus genotype 2 (HCV GT2) infection. This study investigated the efficacy and safety of SOF/RBV in Korean patients with HCV GT2 infection and clinical factors predicting sustained virological response 12 weeks (SVR12) after the end of SOF/RBV treatment. Methods: A total of 181 patients with HCV GT2 with/without cirrhosis were treated with SOF/RBV for 16/12 weeks. Rapid virological response (RVR) was defined as non-detectable HCV RNA at 4 weeks. Results: The RVR rate was 80.7% (146/181), the end of treatment response rate was 97.8% (177/181) and the SVR12 rate was 92.8% (168/181). Of eight patients with relapse, four did not achieve RVR. Three patients had a history of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Multivariable analysis showed that RVR (p = 0.015) and no previous history of HCC (p = 0.007) were associated with SVR12. Factors significantly contributing to RVR included cirrhosis, creatinine concentration, and pre-treatment HCV RNA level. SVR12 rate was significantly higher in RVR (+) than RVR (-) patients (95.2% vs. 82.9%, p = 0.011) and also significantly higher in patients without than with a history of HCC (94.1% vs. 72.7%, p = 0.008). During treatment, 80/181 patients (44.2%) experienced mild to moderate adverse events, with 32 (17.7%) requiring RBV dose reductions due to anemia. Conclusions: SOF/RBV treatment was effective and tolerable in HCV GT2 patients. RVR and no previous history of HCC were positive predictors of SVR12.

Negative pressure wound therapy for inguinal lymphatic complications in critically ill patients

        Yong-Kyu Cheong,Heungman Jun,Yong-Pil Cho,Gi-Won Song,Ki-Myung Moon,Tae-Won Kwon,Sung-Gyu Lee 대한외과학회 2013 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.85 No.3

Purpose: In this study, we investigated the therapeutic potential of regulated negative pressure vacuum-assisted wound therapy for inguinal lymphatic complications in critically ill, liver transplant recipients. Methods: The great saphenous vein was harvested for hepatic vein reconstruction during liver transplantation in 599 living-donor liver transplant recipients. Fourteen of the recipients (2.3%) developed postoperative inguinal lymphatic complications and were treated with negative pressure wound therapy, and they were included in this study. Results: The average total duration of negative pressure wound therapy was 23 days (range, 11 to 42 days). Complete resolution of the lymphatic complications and wound healing were achieved in all 14 patients, 5 of whom were treated in hospital and 9 as outpatients. There was no clinically detectable infection, bleeding or recurrence after an average follow-up of 27 months (range, 7 to 36 months). Conclusion: Negative pressure wound therapy is an effective, readily-available treatment option that is less invasive than exploration and ligation of leaking lymphatics and provides good control of drainage and rapid wound closure in critically ill patients.

Hesperidin Lowers Activities of 3 - Hydroxy - 3 - methylglutaryl - CoA Reductase and Acyl - CoA : Cholesterol Acyltransferase in Rats Fed High - Cholesterol Diet

        Yong Bok Park,Tae-Sook Jeong,Sung-Heui Lee,Song-Hae Bok,Yong-Kook Kwon,Ki-Hwan Bae,Mi-Kyung Lee,Myung-Sook Choi 한국식품영양과학회 2000 Preventive Nutrition and Food Science Vol.5 No.2

In this study, a potential mechanism through which the hesperidin might work on the effect was examined in vivo. Male rats were fed a high cholesterol synthetic diet (1%, wt/wt) with hesperidin (0.1%, wt/wt) for 42 days. Activity of hepatic HMG-CoA reductase was significantly lowered by the hesperidin supplement compared to the control. Hesperidin did not significantly alter plasma or hepatic lipids, but tended to lower those lipid levels. Hesperidin also subsequently reduced the fecal neutral sterols compared to the control (254.3 mg/d vs. 521.9 mg/d). The inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase resulting from the hesperidin supplementation could count for the reduction in fecal neutral sterols that appears to compensate for the decreased cholesterol biosynthesis. The dose of hesperidin in a high cholesterol diet should apparently be more than 0.1% to exhibit the hypocholesterolemic response in these rats. It remains to be determined whether the observed alterations in cholesterol metabolism are specific to the rat or also could be applied to the humans.

      • The comparative study in use of Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs effects on bone mineral density between Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis

( Sang Yeob Lee ),( Yong Jun Kim ),( Sang Hyeon Kang ),( Dong Yeol Lee ),( Duk Song Cho ),( Kyong Han Kim ),( Won Tae Chung ),( Sung Won Lee ) 대한내과학회 2011 대한내과학회 추계학술발표논문집 Vol.2011 No.1

The NSAIDs and celecoxib in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis had been used for a long time. However, in vitro animal model, these drugs had been reported that inhibit PGE2 and suppressed the PGE2 production by osteoblasts is involved in the mechanism of bone resorption recently. so the influence of NSAIDs and celecoxib on the patient`s actual bone density was studied. We enrolled 445 patients (Rheumatoid arthritis 256, Osteoarthritis 189), and investigated an use of NSAIDs effects on bone mineral density. All patients included in the study of the patients receiving bisphosphonate. To evaluation of bone mineral density, the Hologic QDR dual energy x ray absorptiometry was regularly performed at intervals of one year, but one-year intervals to observe changes in bone mineral density thought to be too short observation period, two-year trend of change in bone mineral density measured. The NSAIDs administered in each of the patients and the NSAIDs have adverse effects on patients were treated on behalf of celecoxib. Both patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the average steroid prednisolone 10 mg / day was in use, the NSAIDs of the 140 people, the celecoxib was used the 116 patients. The patients with osteoarthritis did not use steroids, NSAIDs was used 106 patients, celecoxib was used 83 patients. In patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the average disease duration of 8 years, the average age is 70 years old and received treatment with NSAIDs or celecoxib period was an average of 4 years, in patients with degenerative arthritis, 7.8 years, 69 years old, was 3 years. During the observation period of the average change of the T-score showed increased in both groups. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis, lumbar portion of 0.11, hip portion 0.01, and patients with degenerative arthritis, lumbar portion 0.15, hip portion 0.06, were increased. Statistically in the groups with the administration of NSAIDs or celecoxib on bone mineral density did not affect. However, The use of bisposphonate was significant (p<0.05). In conclusion, the treatment of NSAIDs or celecoxib did not affect bone mineral density in rheumatoid arthritis patients or patients with degenerative arthritis.

Analysis of gene profiles involved in the enhancement of all-trans retinoic acid-induced HL-60 cell differentiation by sesquiterpene lactones identifies asparagine synthetase as a novel target for differentiation-inducing therapy

SONG, JU HAN,KIM, SEUNG HYUN,CHO, KYUNG-MIN,HWANG, SEUNG YONG,KIM, HYEOUNG-JOON,KIM, TAE SUNG Spandidos Publications 2014 International journal of oncology Vol.44 No.3

All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is one of the most useful drugs in the treatment for acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), but its adverse effects, which include drug resistance and hypercalcemia are obstacles to achieving complete remission. Our previous study showed that some sesquiterpene lactones (STLs), i.e., helenalin (HE) and parthenolide (PA) but not sclareolide (SC), enhance ATRA-induced differentiation of HL-60 APL cells with no unexpected effects, but the precise mechanism on underlying this synergism is not yet fully understood. In this study, we investigated the distinctive transcriptional profile of cells treated with effective STL compounds, which were identified by comparing the profile with that of cells treated with SC. Genome-wide approaches using cDNA microarrays showed that co-treatment with the differentiation-enhancing STLs HE and PA maximized the transcriptional variation regulated by the suboptimal concentration of ATRA in HL-60 cells. Of the genes of interest, asparagine synthetase was remarkably downregulated by ATRA co-treated with either HE or PA, but not with SC. In an additional analysis for the role of asparagine synthetase, ATRA-mediated HL-60 cell differentiation was enhanced when asparagine in the culture media was depleted by an addition of L-asparaginase, indicating that downregulation of asparagine synthetase gene expression may be involved in the enhanced cell differentiation by STL compounds. These results provide useful insight into differentiation-inducing therapy in the treatment of leukemia.

Fates of retained hepatic segment IV and its prognostic impact in adult split liver transplantation using an extended right liver graft

        Yong-Kyu Chung,Shin Hwang,Chul-Soo Ahn,Ki-Hun Kim,Deok-Bog Moon,Tae-Yong Ha,Gi-Won Song,Dong-Hwan Jung,Gil-Chun Park,Young-In Yoon,Woo-Hyoung Kang,Hwui-Dong Cho,Jin Uk Choi,Minjae Kim,Sang Hoon Kim,By 대한외과학회 2021 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.101 No.1

Purpose: When splitting a liver for adult and pediatric graft recipients, the retained left medial section (S4) will undergo ischemic necrosis and the right trisection graft becomes an extended right liver (ERL) graft. We investigated the fates of the retained S4 and its prognostic impact in adult split liver transplantation (SLT) using an ERL graft. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of 25 adult SLT recipients who received split ERL grafts. Results: The mean model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score was 27.3 ± 10.9 and graft-recipient weight ratio (GRWR) was 1.98 ± 0.44. The mean donor age was 26.5 ± 7.7 years. The split ERL graft weight was 1,181.5 ± 252.8 g, which resulted in a mean GRWR of 1.98 ± 0.44. Computed tomography of the retained S4 parenchyma revealed small ischemic necrosis in 16 patients (64.0%) and large ischemic necrosis in the remaining 9 patients (36.0%). No S4-associated biliary complications were developed. The mean GRWR was 1.87 ± 0.43 in the 9 patients with large ischemic necrosis and 2.10 ± 0.44 in the 15 cases with small ischemic necrosis (P = 0.283). The retained S4 parenchyma showed gradual atrophy on follow-up imaging studies. The amount of S4 ischemic necrosis was not associated with graft (P = 0.592) or patient (P = 0.243) survival. A MELD score of >30 and pretransplant ventilator support were associated with inferior outcomes. Conclusion: The amount of S4 ischemic necrosis is not a prognostic factor in adult SLT recipients, probably due to a sufficiently large GRWR.
