      • Taiwanese Mothers` Motivations for Teaching English to Their Young Children at Home

        Yi Chen Lan,Jane Torr,Sheila Degotardi 한국아동학회 2012 Child studies in Asia-Pacific context Vol.2 No.2

Research has shown that mothers` attitudes towards early English language and literacy learning are important for children`s English language development. Some researchers have indicated that in Taiwan most parents have a positive attitude towards English instruction and are motivated to teach English at home to their preschoolers. There is, however, little current data available to explain the motivations behind such parents` decisions to teach English to their child in the home before the commencement of formal schooling. We conducted a thematic analysis of the written survey responses of 263 Taiwanese mothers who explained why they taught their preschool children English at home. The findings indicate that English is highly valued for children`s school readiness, future career opportunities, and because of its status as a global language. The mothers` motivations for teaching English include the desire to cultivate the child`s interest, a belief in ``the earlier the better" for second language learning, and a belief in the need to review and practice English. These findings have the potential to inform educational policies and implementation strategies, as they can reveal whether mothers`` motivations align with national priorities for English language education.

      • Factors Related to the Home Teaching of English Language to Preschool aged Children: A Taiwanese Study

        Yi-Chen Lan,Sheila Degotardi,Jane Torr 환태평양유아교육연구학회 2011 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhoo Vol.5 No.2

Issues surrounding the introduction of English as a foreign language (EFL) instruction to children during the early childhood period are subject to much debate. Official government policies may not always reflect actual parental practices. Little is known about the extent to which explicit EFL teaching by mothers occurs in the home context. This study investigated whether Taiwanese mothers of 3 to 6 year old children were teaching EFL to their children at home and the characteristics associated with this practice. A sample of 466 mothers of preschoolers completed a questionnaire identifying their home teaching practices and assessing their attitudes towards teaching EFL. Results indicated a positive trend towards home EFL teaching, with teaching mothers tending to be aged between 30-39 years, more highly educated and more confident about their own English abilities than those who were not teaching. The findings raise significant issues that can inform EFL teaching policy and practice during the early childhood years.

Causal Relations between Exposome and Stroke: A Mendelian Randomization Study

        Hong-Qi Li,Yi-Wei Feng,Yu-Xiang Yang,Xin-Yi Leng,Prof Can Zhang,Shi-Dong Chen,Kevin Kuo,Shu-Yi Huang,Xue-Qing Zhang,Yi Dong,Xiang Han,Xin Cheng,Mei Cui,Lan Tan,Qiang Dong,Jin-Tai Yu 대한뇌졸중학회 2022 Journal of stroke Vol.24 No.2

Background and Purpose To explore the causal relationships of elements of the exposome with ischemic stroke and its subtypes at the omics level and to provide evidence for stroke prevention. Methods We conducted a Mendelian randomization study between exposure and any ischemic stroke (AIS) and its subtypes (large-artery atherosclerotic disease [LAD], cardioembolic stroke [CE], and small vessel disease [SVD]). The exposure dataset was the UK Biobank involving 361,194 subjects, and the outcome dataset was the MEGASTROKE consortium including 52,000 participants. Results We found that higher blood pressure (BP) (systolic BP: odds ratio [OR], 1.02; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01 to 1.04; diastolic BP: OR, 1.03; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.05; pulse pressure: OR, 1.03; 95% CI, 1.00 to 1.06), atrial fibrillation (OR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.13 to 1.25), and diabetes (OR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.07 to 1.18) were significantly associated with ischemic stroke. Importantly, higher education (OR, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.60 to 0.79) decreased the risk of ischemic stroke. Higher systolic BP (OR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.10), pulse pressure (OR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.14), diabetes (OR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.13 to 1.45), and coronary artery disease (OR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.25 to 2.00) could cause LAD. Atrial fibrillation could cause CE (OR, 1.90; 95% CI, 1.71 to 2.11). For SVD, higher systolic BP (OR, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.00 to 1.07), diastolic BP (OR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.12), and diabetes (OR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.10 to 1.36) were causal factors. Conclusions The study revealed elements of the exposome causally linked to ischemic stroke and its subtypes, including conventional causal risk factors and novel protective factors such as higher education.

Mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles protect against abdominal aortic aneurysm formation by inhibiting NET-induced ferroptosis

        Chen Liang,Liu Yuting,Wang Zheyu,Zhang Leiyang,Xu Yi,Li Yinan,Zhang Lan,Wang Guiming,Yang Shuofei,Xue Guanhua 생화학분자생물학회 2023 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.55 No.-

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) play an important role in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) formation; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) may exert therapeutic effects on AAA through their immunomodulatory and regenerative abilities. This study aimed to examine the role and mechanism of MSC-EVs in regulating the development of NET-mediated AAA. Excessive release of NETs was observed in patients with AAA, and the levels of NET components were associated with the clinical outcomes of the patients. Datasets from the Gene Expression Omnibus database were analyzed and revealed that the PI3K/AKT pathway and ferroptosis were strongly associated with NETosis during AAA formation. Further experiments verified that NETs promoted AAA formation by inducing ferroptosis in smooth muscle cells (SMCs) by inhibiting the PI3K/AKT pathway. The PI3K agonist 740 Y-P, the ferroptosis inhibitor ferrostatin-1, and Padi4 deficiency significantly prevented AAA formation. MSC-EVs attenuated AAA formation by reducing NET release in an angiotensin II-induced AAA mouse model. In vitro experiments revealed that MSC-EVs reduced the release of NETs by shifting NETosis to apoptosis. Our study indicates an important role for NET-induced SMC ferroptosis in AAA formation and provides several potential targets for AAA treatment

      • Effects of post anneal for the INZO films prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis

        Lan, Wen-How,Li, Yue-Lin,Chung, Yu-Chieh,Yu, Cheng-Chang,Chou, Yi-Chun,Wu, Yi-Da,Huang, Kai-Feng,Chen, Lung-Chien Techno-Press 2014 Advances in nano research Vol.2 No.4

Indium-nitrogen co-doped zinc oxide thin films (INZO) were prepared on glass substrates in the atmosphere by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. The aqueous solution of zinc acetate, ammonium acetate and different indium sources: indium (III) chloride and indium (III) nitrate were used as the precursors. After film deposition, different anneal temperature treatment as 350, 450, $550^{\circ}C$ were applied. Electrical properties as concentration and mobility were characterized by Hall measurement. The surface morphology and crystalline quality were characterized by SEM and XRD. With the activation energy analysis for both films, the concentration variation of the films at different heat treatment temperature was realized. Donors correspond to zinc related states dominate the conduction mechanism for these INZO films after $550^{\circ}C$ high temperature heat treatment process.

      • Curcumin Analogue A501 induces G2/M Arrest and Apoptosis in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer Cells

        Xia, Yi-Qun,Wei, Xiao-Yan,Li, Wu-Lan,Kanchana, Karvannan,Xu, Chao-Chao,Chen, Da-Hui,Chou, Pei-Hong,Jin, Rong,Wu, Jian-Zhang,Liang, Guang Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.16

Curcumin and its analogues have been reported to exert anti-cancer activity against a variety of tumors. Here, we reported A501, a new curcumin analogue. The effect of A501 on cell viability was detected by MTT assay, the result showed that A501 had a better inhibiting effect on the four non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells than that of curcumin. Moreover, Colony forming experiment showed A501 significant restrained cell proliferation. Flow cytometry displayed A501 can cause G2/M arrest and induce apoptosis. Western blotting showed that A501 decreased the expression of cyclinB1, cdc-2, bcl-2, while increased the expression of p53, cleaved caspase-3 and bax. In conclusion, curcumin analogues A501 played antitumor activity by inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis of NSCLC cells. And it was likely to be a promising starting point for the development of curcumin-based anticancer drugs.

Chinese herbal injections in combination with radiotherapy for advanced pancreatic cancer: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

        Yun-Ru Chen,Ruo-Tong Zhao,Yi-Fang Xu,Yin-Jie Ma,Shao-Bo Hu,Xue-Hui Wang,Bing-Bing Fan,Yan-Ji Zhou,Yu-Bei Huang,Nicola Robinson,Jian-ping Liu,Zhao-Lan Liu 한국한의학연구원 2023 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.12 No.4

Background: Advanced pancreatic cancer (APC) is a fatal disease with limited treatment options. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of different Chinese herbal injections (CHIs) as adjuvants for radiotherapy (RT) in APC and compare their treatment potentials using network meta-analysis. Methods: We systematically searched three English and four Chinese databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from inception to July 25, 2023. The primary outcome was the objective response rate (ORR). Secondary outcomes included Karnofsky performance status (KPS) score, overall survival (OS), and adverse events (AEs). The treatment potentials of different CHIs were ranked using the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA). The Cochrane RoB 2 tool and CINeMA were used for quality assessment and evidence grading. Results: Eighteen RCTs involving 1199 patients were included. Five CHIs were evaluated. Compound Kushen injection (CKI) combined with RT significantly improved ORR compared to RT alone (RR 1.49, 95 % CrI 1.21–1.86). Kanglaite (KLT) plus RT (RR 1.58, 95 % CrI 1.20–2.16) and CKI plus RT (RR 1.49, 95 % CrI 1.16–1.95) were associated with improved KPS score compared to radiation monotherapy, with KLT+RT being the highest rank (SUCRA 72.28 %). Regarding AEs, CKI plus RT was the most favorable in reducing the incidence of leukopenia (SUCRA 90.37 %) and nausea/vomiting (SUCRA 85.79 %). Conclusions: CKI may be the optimal choice of CHIs to combine with RT for APC as it may improve clinical response, quality of life, and reduce AEs. High-quality trials are necessary to establish a robust body of evidence. Protocol registration: PROSPERO, CRD42023396828.

Acupuncture combined with speech rehabilitation training for post-stroke dysarthria: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

        Qianwen Xie,Xueyin Chen,Jingmin Xiao,Shaonan Liu,Lihong Yang,Jing Chen,Jiaqi Lai,Rui Lan,Yi Chen,Haifang Yang,Xinfeng Guo 한국한의학연구원 2020 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.9 No.4

Background: The evidence of Acupuncture combined with speech rehabilitation training for post-stroke dysarthria is insufficient and there is no consensus on its efficacy. Methods: We searched seven Chinese and English medicine databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from their inception to November 2019. The primary outcome measure was the clinical response rate, assessed with the Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment (FDA) tool. We assessed risk of bias using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. We used GRADE to assess the certainty of evidence (CoE). Results: Thirty studies were included in this systematic review, 23 of which were pooled in meta-analysis. Acupuncture combined with speech rehabilitation training is likely beneficial for was response rate (n = 1685; RR = 1.37; 95% CI [1.29, 1.46], P < 0.01, I2 = 34%; 17 studies, low CoE) compared to speech rehabilitation treatment alone. Conclusion: The combination of acupuncture and speech rehabilitation training may improve total response rate of stroke patients with dysarthria. However, more RCTs with rigorous study design and validated outcome measures are needed to confirm the evidence.
