      • Compact and contact quad-band (DVB-H UHF/L, WLAN 11a/b) antenna for PMP applications

        <P>The quad-band antenna, which is composed of two compact dual-band antennas, is presented for potable media player (PMP) applications. The antenna for the broadcasting dual-band (DVB-H UHF; 470 - 862 - MHz, L; 1452 - 1492 - MHz) is composed of a planar inverted F-shaped antenna with an input matching circuit. The antenna for the communication dual-band (WLAN 11b; 2.4 - 2.5 - GHz, 11a; 5.15 - 5.8 - GHz) is composed of a folded dipole antenna with enhanced mutual coupling. The proposed antennas are contact with the PMP case (¿<SUB>r</SUB> = 3.2) which is used as a substrate for size reduction and compact design.</P>

Looking at bias alone implies that ridge estimators are inferior. However, using the criterion of the generalized variance, ridge estimators are better than ordinary least square estimators.

        갑상선 기능저하증 환자에서의 수분 배설의 저하 및 수분 저류는 잘 알려져 있으며 항이뇨 호르몬의 비정상적인 증가, 사구체 여과율의 감소, 헨레 고리에서의 염분 재홉수의 감소등이 원인으로 생각되어 왔다. 지난 10여년 간에 이루어진 일련의 연구에서 세뇨관 상피에서의 삼투성 수분 이동은 Aquaporin(AQP) 수분 통로에 의한다는 것이 분명해졌다. 현재까지 신장에는 적어도 6개의 AQP (AQP1, AQP2, AQP3, AQP4, AQP6, AQP7) 동위단백이 발현된다고 알려져 있으며, 여러 가지 수분대사 장애를 동반하는 질환에서 이러한 AQP 단백발현의 변조가 일어난다는 사실이 밝혀졌다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 갑상선 기능 저하증과 관련된 수분저류의 기전으로 AQP 수분통로가 어떤 연관이 있는지를 알아보고자 하였다. 실험은 Sprague-Dawley(체중 200∼250g)숫쥐를 사용하며 0.04% methimazole을 음용수로 주어 8주간 유지하여 갑상선기능 저하증을 유발하여 실험하였다. 결과를 보면 실험군에서 혈청 갑상선 호르몬의 현저한 감소를 보였다. AQP 2 단백발현은 신장의 피질 수질 및 내수질에서 모두 유의한 증가를 보였다. AQP1 및 AQP 3 단백발현은 신장의 수질에서는 별 변화를 보이지 않는 반면 피질에서는 유의한 증가를 보였다. 혈청 arginine vasopressin (AVP) 의 농도는 변화를 보이지 않는 반면에 AVP, sodium fluoride, forskolin 등으로 자극한 adenylyl cyclase 활성도는 실험군의 신장에서 감약된 결과를 보였다. 이상의 결과로 AQP 1-3 단백발현의 증가가 갑상선 기능 저하증에 의한 수분저류에 적어도 일부나마 관여할 것으로 사료된다. The present study was aimed to determine the molecular mechanisms underlying the water retention associated with hypothyroidism. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (200 ~ 220g) were experimentally induced of hypothyroidism by treatment with methimazole in drinking water (0.04%) for 8 weeks. In the experimental group, serum concentrations of thyroxine and triliodothyronine were significantly decreased. The expression of AQP2 was significantly increased in the cortex, outer, medulla, and inner, medulla of the kidney. The expression of AQP1 and AQP3 was significantly increased in the cortex, though not in the medulla. The adenylyl cyclase activity provoked bv arginine vasopressin, sodium fluoride, or forskolin was blunted in the hypothyroid kidney. while plasma levels of arginine vasopressin were not significantly changed. The increased expression of AQP1-3 channels may in part be causally related with the water retention in hypothyroidism.

        Low Temperature Suspension Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylate for the Preparation of High Molecular Weight Poly(methyl methacrylate)/Silver Nanocomposite Microspheres

        In order to prepare high molecular weight poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/silver nanocomposite microspheres, methyl methacrylate was suspension-polymerized in the presence of silver nanoparticles at low temperature with 2,2'-azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) as an initiator. The rate of conversion was increased by increasing the initiator concentration. When silver nanoparticles were added, the rate of polymerization decreased slightly. High monomer conversion (about $85\%$) was obtained in spite of low polymerization temperature of $30^{\circ}C$. Under controlled conditions, PMMA/silver microspheres with various number-average degrees of polymerization (6,000-37,000) were prepared. Morphology studies revealed that except for normal suspension microspheres with a smooth surface, a golf ball-like appearance of the microspheres was observed, due to the migration and aggregation of the hydrophilic silver nanoparticles at the sublayer beneath the microsphere's surface.

      • Effects of Intracerebroventricular Captopril on the Central Pressor Response to Bradykinin in Normotensive and Hypertensive Rats

        Captopril, an inhibitor of angiotensin converting enzyme, is also known to inhibit the degradation of bradykinin. We examined the effects of intracerebroventricular (ICV) captopril on the central pressor response to bradykinin in normotensive, 2-kidney, 1 clip Goldblatt (GHR) and deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt hypertensive rats. Captopril (1 mg) and bradykinin (5 nmol) were administered into the right lateral cerebral ventricle, and blood pressure and heart rate were continuously monitored throughout the experiment. ICV captopril alone did not affect the blood pressure within 10 minutes but it significantly augmented the central pressor response to bradykinin in GHR. On the contrary, captopril was without effect on the pressor response to bradykinin in normotensive and DOCA-salt rats. These findings indicate that endogenous kinins are not critical in regulating arterial pressure in normotensive and DOCA hypertensive rats. However, in GHR, an enhanced activity of the brain kallikrein-kinin system in maintaining the high blood pressure is suggested.

        Carotenoids: Functions and Recent Research Progress

        Carotenoids are abundant int he Korean food supply. The intake of foods rich in carotenoids appears to be associated with optimal health, and a reduction in the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, macular degeneration and cataract formation. Specific dietary carotenoids may be responsible for these specific protective effects. Hydrocarbon carotenoids such as $\alpha$-,$\beta$-carotenes and lycopene may reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease, whereas oxygenated carotenoids, such as lutein and zeaxanthin, may be important in protection of the eye. Dietary carotenoids, such as lutein, cryptoxanthin, $\alpha$-carotene, $\beta$-carotene and lycopene can be readily obtained from the diet, Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach and broccoli, contain both oxygenated and hydrocarbon carotenoids ; yellow or orange vegetables, such as carrots, have high levels of $\alpha$-carotene and $\beta$-carotene ; and tomatoes contain high amounts of lycopene. Besides being important vitamin A sources, provitamin A carotenoids such as $\alpha$-carotene, $\beta$-carotene and cryptoxanthin, participate in the cell defense systems that are associated with radical quenching. Non-provitamin A carotenoids, such as lutein and lycopene, major carotenoids in human plasma, have also been reported to possess strong antioxidant capability. The alteration of dietary sources of carotenoids can modify their levels in the circulation and target tissues, and thus prevent or delay the onset of these chronic diseases.
