Metagenomic Analysis of Fungal Communities Inhabiting the Fairy Ring Zone of Tricholoma matsutake

Tricholoma matsutake, an ectomycorrhiza that has mutual relationships with the rootlet of Pinus denisflora, forms a fruiting body that serves as a valuable food in Asia. However, the artificial culture of this fungus has not been successful. Soil fungi, including T. matsutake, coexist with many other microorganisms and plants; therefore, complex microbial communities have an influence on the fruiting body formation of T. matsutake. Here, we report on the structures of fungal communities associated with the fairy ring of T. matsutake through the pyrosequencing method. Soil samples were collected inside the fairy ring zone, in the fairy ring zone, and outside the fairy ring zone. A total of 37,125 sequencing reads were obtained and 728 to 1,962 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were observed in the sampling zones. The fairy ring zone had the lowest OTUs and the lowest fungal diversity of all sampling zones. The number of OTUs and fungal taxa inside and outside the fairy ring zone was, respectively, about 2 times and 1.5 times higher than the fairy ring. Taxonomic analysis showed that each sampling zone has different fungal communities. In particular, out of 209 genera total, 6 genera in the fairy ring zone, such as Hemimycena, were uniquely present and 31 genera, such as Mycena, Boletopsis, and Repetophragma, were specifically absent. The results of metagenomic analysis based on the pyrosequencing indicate a decrease of fungal communities in the fairy ring zone and changes of fungal communities depending on the fairy ring growth of T. matsutake.

Backgrounds/Aims: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) has become a standard procedure for treatment of benign gallbladder diseases. There has been a small proportion of gallbladder cancer (GBC) which was incidentally found in the gallbladder specimen, and LC has been tried in some patients with faintly suspected GBC. This study intended to analyze the prognosis of patients with pT1b/T2 GBC who have undergone LC and the outcome of extended re-operation. Methods: After analyzing the institutional profiles of 500 GBC patients who have undergone surgical resection, we selected 64 patients who underwent LC initially from January 1996 to December 2008 and whose gallbladder pathology was confined to pT1b or pT2 lesions. Of them, 34 patients (53.1%) underwent extended reoperation. Their medical records were reviewed retrospectively. Results: In the LC only group (n=30), mean age of the 16 pT1 patients was 65.7±12.5 years and mean age of the 14 pT2 patients was 66.7±10.1 years. In the reoperation group (n=34), mean age of the 8 pT1b patients was 52.6±9.9 years and in 26 pT2 patients, mean age was 59.2±7.9 years. The reoperation group showed a younger patient age pattern than the LC only group (p=0.001). The types of reoperation were liver resection with lymph node (LN) dissection in 17, bile duct resection with LN dissection in 2, and hepatectomy and bile duct resection with LN dissection in 15. In the LC only group, the 5-year survival rate (5-YSR) was 70.3% in pT1b and 43.2% in pT2. In the reoperation group, 5-YSR was 62.5% in pT1b (n=8) and 59.5% in pT2 (n=26). A survival comparison between the two groups showed no significant survival gain in pT1 patients (p=0.69) and in pT2 patients (p=0.14). In our whole database analysis, 5-YSR of pT1bNx lesions was 70% after cholecystectomy and 78% after extended cholecystectomy. Lymph node metastasis was identified in 11% of pT1b lesions. For pT2N0 lesions, overall 5-YSR was 62% after R0 resection, showing no survival difference between primary extended surgery and LC-redo operation (p=0.45). Conclusions: The survival gain of reoperation was not evident in pT1b lesions. In contrast, some noticeable but not statistically significant survival difference was observed in pT2 lesions. Thus, reoperation for pT1b/T2 GBC following LC is indicated for individualized reasons, especially in patients with pT1b lesions. Old age was one of the important factors in deciding not to reoperate.

<P>Here we introduce the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (SE) of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets interleaved between polyetherimide (PEI) films fabricated by electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Incorporating only 0.66 vol % of RGO, the developed PEI/RGO composite films exhibited an electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) at 6.37 dB corresponding to ∼50% shielding of incident waves. Excellent flexibility and optical transparency up to 62% of visible light was demonstrated. It was achieved by placing the RGO sheets in the localized area as a thin film (ca. 20 nm in thickness) between the PEI films (ca. 2 μm) to be an interleaved and alternating structure. This unique interleaved structure without any delamination areas was fabricated by a successive application of cathodic and anodic EPD of both RGO and PEI layers. The EPD fabrication process was ensured by an alternating deposition of the quarternized-PEI drops and RGO, each taking positive and negative charges, respectively, in the water medium. We believe that the developed facile fabrication method of RGO interleaved structure with such low volume fraction has great potential to be used as a transparent EMI shielding material.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/aamick/2014/aamick.2014.6.issue-20/am503893v/production/images/medium/am-2014-03893v_0009.gif'></P>

Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the effects of ankle joint position during closed kinetic chain (CKC) exercise on knee extensor strength and balance in patients with chronic stroke. Methods: Sixteen patients with chronic stroke participated in the study. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: $15^{\circ}$ ankle joint plantar flexion group (n=8) and ankle joint neutral group (n=8) during CKC exercise. All participants underwent conventional physical therapy for 30 minutes. In addition, the experimental group ($15^{\circ}$ ankle joint plantar flexion group) and control group (ankle joint neutral group) participated in a 20-minute CKC exercise program. In both groups exercise was performed three times a week for four weeks. Outcomes including knee extensor strength and balance ability (Five times sit-to-stand test, Timed up and go test, and Balancia) were measured before and after exercise. Results: Significant differences in knee extensor strength and balance ability were observed between pre- and post-exercise in all groups (p<0.05). The improvement of knee extensor strength and dynamic balance was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings demonstrated that $15^{\circ}$ ankle joint plantar flexion during closed kinetic chain exercise is effective in improvement of knee extensor strength and dynamic balance in patients with chronic stroke.
A case report of radiation therapy induced uterine rhabdomyosarcoma

In uterine sarcoma, leiomyosarcoma is the most common, with low grade endometrial stromal sarcoma and high grade endometrial stromal sarcoma. Among them, Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a very rare, aggressive mesenchymal tumor. Usually diagnosed in the pediatric period, it occurs commonly in the head and neck, urinary tract, reproductive organs, limbs and trunk. RMS is subclassified into embryonal, alveolar, anaplastic (previously called pleomorphic), and spindle cell / sclerosing variants. In adult patients, mostly, it occurs in soft tissues of limbs. RMS appears as a rhabdomyosarcomatous differentiation, usually with adenosarcoma, carcinosarcoma, and more rarely as a pure form of RMS. Clinicopathologic information is restricted compared with other gynecologic malignancies because the incidence is very rare. A 71-year-old patient visited the hospital to abdominal discomfort, anorexia and constipation. She was diagnosed as cervical cancer IIIB, squamous cell carcinoma in 2009, and underwent adjuvant concurrent chemoradiation therapy and chemotherapy of cisplatin and etoposide regimen. Followed by, Intracavitary radiotherapy (ICR) was performed with external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) 4,500cGy / 25fractions and parametrial booster 600cGy. The patient has been up until recently with no evidence of disease (NED). The patient underwent abdominopelvic CT and found a huge heterogeneous mass of 20 cm in size. The patient underwent surgery because of suspected recurrent cervical cancer or ovarian cancer. At the time of surgery, the tumor was suspected to be sarcoma rather than cervical cancer or ovarian cancer. However, before chemotherapy, she complained of speech disturbances and facial paralysis. She was referred to a neurologist and underwent brain MRI. Multiple masses on the occipital bone and parietal bone was detected and diagnosed as skull metastasis. PET / CT images were taken under the skull base level, so metastic diseases were not diagnosed preoperatively.

Three new sesterterpenoids, phorbaketals L-N (1-3), were isolated from a marine sponge of the genus Phorbas and their complete structures were elucidated via analysis of HRFABMS and NMR spectroscopic data. phorbaketal N (3) showed potent cytotoxicity against human pancreas cancer cells(1C50=11.4uM). ⓒ2014 Elsevier Ltd.
