      • Information Security in the Age of Algorithms

        Fei Yang(Fei Yang),Xuan Luo(Xuan Luo) 아시아사회과학학회 2023 Jornal of Asia Social Science Vol.10 No.1

Algorithms are now widely used in all areas of social life, building a new social picture and reality. As a technology based on big data modelling and analysis, algorithms are embedded in all aspects of information production and distribution by means of technology, and become an important force in the construction of information environment. Under the algorithmic logic of information dissemination, the visible and invisible are in fact influenced by the algorithm as an authoritative mediator and mediator. From Daniel Dayan's 'visibility' perspective, this paper examines the risks posed by algorithms in three areas: the risk of passive disclosure of personal privacy, the use and control of personal data by profit-seeking algorithms, and the polarisation of information cocoons and circles. The information security risk brought by algorithms is attempted to be tackled and improved from several aspects, such as constructing a 'trinity' information security strategy system; adhering to the mainstream value orientation and highlighting the rational balance of “tool-value” of algorithms; and bringing into play multiple mechanisms together with effects.

De novo genome assembly and annotation of Holothuria scabra (Jaeger, 1833) from nanopore sequencing reads

        Luo Honglin,Huang Guanghua,Li Jianbin,Yang Qiong,Zhu Jiajie,Zhang Bin,Feng Pengfei,Zhang Yongde,Yang Xueming 한국유전학회 2022 Genes & Genomics Vol.44 No.12

Background: Holothuria scabra is a costly gourmet and traditional Chinese tonic medicine. However, the lack of high-quality genome information hinders the genetic, phylogenetic, and bioactivator researches. Objective: To construct high-quality genomic data of H. scabra and conduct genome-wide phylogenetic analysis. Methods: The whole genome of a male H. scabra was sequenced based on Nanopore MinION platform, and the sequence was assembled by wtdbg2. Transcriptome sequencing was used to aid the gene annotation. Repeat sequences, non-coding RNA, pseudogene and gene functional annotation were analyzed. 750 single-copy gene families from ten species were applied to construct phylogenetic tree for evolutionary analysis by using the ML method. Results: The H. scabra genome of 1.18 Gb (N50 = 1557,492 bp) with 500.42 Mb of putative repetitive sequences was assembled from a male H. scabra individual, and 16,642 protein-coding genes, 951 pseudogenes, 1791 motifs and 45,400 domains from the generated assembly were identified. The divergence time between H. scabra and its ancestor was estimated approximately 192.6 million years ago. H. scabra and A. japonicas joined together while sea urchin and sea star diverged about 440 Mya ago. Some key genes involved in notochord and gill slits development, skeleton degeneration and nervous system, as well as homeobox genes differ between H. scabra and Apostichopus japonicas. Conclusion: We report the first whole genome of H. scabra with expectation that this will be a valuable resource for genetic, phylogenetic, breading, molecular biology and bioactivator studies of sea cucumbers and other invertebrates.

MHD flows in a U-channel under the influence of the spatially different channel-wall electric conductivity and of the magnetic field orientation

Yang Luo,Xiaowen Fan,Chang Nyung Kim 대한기계학회 2021 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.35 No.10

Three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows in a U-channel formed by inlet-, connecting- and outlet-channel are numerically examined with CFX code in the current research. The impacts of the flow velocities, the Hartmann numbers, the spatially changing channel-wall electric conductivity and of the magnetic field orientation on the MHD flow features are studied. Here, considered are the situations where the inlet-channel-wall electric conductivity is changed, while the connecting- and outlet-channel-wall electric conductivity is fixed. Velocity, pressure drop, current density and electric potential are analyzed in the present study. The highest value of velocity is observed in the right-angle segments. Typical “M-type” velocity profiles can be obtained only when the magnetic field and the main flow plane are transverse to each other, while the “M-type” velocity profile may not obtained when the magnetic field intensity is very low. The pressure drop decreases when the inlet channel-wall electric conductivity decreases, and it also decreases with the decreasing of the flow velocity and of the Hartmann number. When the magnetic field is parallel to main flow, the lowest pressure drop can be observed as the channel-wall electric conductivity of the inlet channel is the lowest. With the lower pressure drop, the mechanical stress of the duct can be minimized.

      • Autophagy Inhibition Promotes Gambogic Acid-induced Suppression of Growth and Apoptosis in Glioblastoma Cells

Luo, Guo-Xuan,Cai, Jun,Lin, Jing-Zhi,Luo, Wei-Shi,Luo, Heng-Shan,Jiang, Yu-Yang,Zhang, Yong Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.12

Objective: To investigate the effects of gambogic acid (GA) on the growth of human malignant glioma cells. Methods: U251MG and U87MG human glioma cell lines were treated with GA and growth and proliferation were investigated by MTT and colony formation assays. Cell apoptosis was analyzed by annexin V FITC/PI flow cytometry, mitochondrial membrane potential assays and DAPI nuclear staining. Monodansylcadaverine (MDC) staining and GFP-LC3 localisation were used to detect autophagy. Western blotting was used to investigate the molecular changes that occurred in the course of GA treatment. Results: GA treatment significantly suppressed cell proliferation and colony formation, induced apoptosis in U251 and U87MG glioblastoma cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner. GA treatment also lead to the accumulation of monodansylcadaverine (MDC) in autophagic vacuoles, upregulated expressions of Atg5, Beclin 1 and LC3-II, and the increase of punctate fluorescent signals in glioblastoma cells pre-transfected with GFP-tagged LC3 plasmid. After the combination treatment of autophagy inhitors and GA, GA mediated growth inhibition and apoptotic cell death was further potentiated. Conclusion: Our results suggested that autophagic responses play roles as a self-protective mechanism in GA-treated glioblastoma cells, and autophagy inhibition could be a novel adjunctive strategy for enhancing chemotherapeutic effect of GA as an anti-malignant glioma agent.

Study on the flow features of lead-lithium MHD splitting flows under an external magnetic field with arbitrary orientation

Yang Luo,Yiping Chen,Chang Nyung Kim 대한기계학회 2021 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.35 No.10

The understanding of magnetohydrodynamic phenomena associated with the flow of electrically-conducting fluid in complex ducts is important and necessary in the study of liquid-metal blankets for fusion reactor. This study numerically investigates the lead-lithium (Pb-17Li) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) splitting flows. The effects of the splitting angle of the duct geometry, the magnetic field orientation and the partly different electrical conductivity of the structural walls on the flow characteristics are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, the combined effects of the splitting angle, the magnetic field orientation and duct electrical conductivity on the mass flow rate and pressure drop are considered with many sub-cases. The results show that the mass imbalance and the pressure drop depend on the splitting angle of the duct geometry, on the discrepancy of the electrical conductivity of the sub-channels and also on the magnetic field orientation. In a word, this study can support several approaches to improve the flow imbalance and to reduce the pressure drop in the sub-channels of the liquid-metal (LM) MHD splitting flow system.

      • The Prevalence and Genotype of Human Papillomavirus from Patients with Genital Warts in Eastern Guangdong Province

        Luo, Zhao-Yun,Chen, Qiang,Yang, Hui,Lin, Min,Chen, Chan-Yu,Yang, Chun,Yang, Li-Ye Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.14

Background: Low-risk human papillomavirus (LR-HPV) infection is the main cause of genital warts. LRHPV genotypes 6 and 11 are associated with genital warts, but there have only been a few published studies about the genotype-specific prevalence of HPV in genital warts in China. The objective of our study was to assess the prevalence of HPV genotypes for clinical cases involving both men and women and to evaluate the potential benefit of a quadrivalent (genotypes 6, 11, 16, and 18) HPV vaccine in eastern Guangdong province of China. Materials and Methods: A total of 696 eligible patients with genital warts were enrolled during the period Aug 2009 through Oct 2014. Specimens were collected from genital warts, the HPV GenoArray test was used for HPV detection and genotyping, which could detect 21 HPV genotypes, including genotypes 6, 11, 16, and 18. Results: Among the 696 cases, 675 samples were successfully genotyped. The median age of patients was 32.1 years (range, 16-67 years). The most prevalent genotypes were HPV-6 (285/675, 42.2%), HPV-11 (265/675, 39.3%), HPV-52 (52/675, 7.7%), HPV-16 (51/675, 7.56%), HPV-81 (50/675, 7.40%) and HPV-58 (37/675, 5.48%). Low-risk genotypes predominated, with a prevalence of 96.59%. The cumulative prevalence of genotypes 6 and 11 was 78.7% (531/675), the cumulative prevalence of genotypes 16 and 18 was 11.6% (78/675), and the cumulative prevalence of genotypes 6, 11, 16, and 18 was 82.5% (557/675). Conclusions: Our results provide strong evidence that, in eastern Guangdong, different from Western countries, the most prevalent low risk HPV genotypes in patients with genital warts are 6, 11 and 81. The quadrivalent HPV vaccine could prevent 82.5% of genital warts in eastern Guangdong.

Magnetohydrodynamic flows in a dis-aligned duct system under a uniform magnetic field

Luo, Yang,Zhu, Mengqi,Kim, Chang Nyung 대한기계학회 2018 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.32 No.2

<P>In the present study, three-dimensional Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Liquid-metal (LM) flows in a dis-aligned duct system under a uniform magnetic field are investigated by numerical method. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are carried out to analyzed the characteristics of the MHD flows and to examine the inter-relationship of the LM velocity, current density, electric potential and pressure, using CFX. The duct system consists of two dis-aligned parallel channels (One inflow channel and one outflow channel) and one channel connecting the above channels. In the present study, cases with different lengths of the connecting channel are considered. Because of the inertial force therein, a velocity recirculation is found in the region just after the first turning, resulting in a region of peak value in electric potential together with complex distribution of the current. Also, another velocity recirculation is seen in the region just after the second turning, creating another region of peak value in electric potential. In a situation where the magnetic field is applied in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the main flow in a dis-aligned duct system, until the fluid reaches an edge, the velocity component parallel to the magnetic field converges, with an increasing in the peak value of the side layer velocity, and then, after the fluid passes the edge, the velocity component parallel to the magnetic field diverges, with a decrease in the peak value of the side layer velocity. Oppositely, until the fluid reaches a corner, the velocity component parallel to the magnetic field diverges, with a decrease in the peak value of the side layer velocity, and then, after the fluid passes the corner, the velocity component parallel to the magnetic field converges, with an increase in the peak value of the side layer velocity. It is found that this type of velocity pattern is closely associated with the current distribution in the region of right-angle segments in the sense that the magnitude of the electromotive component of electric current is proportional to the fluid velocity.</P>

Directions for the Korean Social INTEGRATION Policy Index Development

        Yang Luo,Eunsook Seo J-INSTITUTE 2021 Public Value Vol.6 No.1

Purpose: As South Korea enters a multicultural society, the importance of a reasonable and effective social integration policy system has been emphasized. The evaluation of social integration policies can promote policy improvement and improve policy effects. The purpose of this study is to analyze the limitations of the application of MIPEX in the evaluation of the Korean social integration policy and to give suggestions about the developing direction of South Korea's social integration policy index. Method: This study starts with the MIPEX’s analysis of South Korea to understands the advantages and dis-advantages of Korean immigrant social integration policy. On the other hand, there are certain limits in MIPEX’s evaluation and practical application in South Korea, so by observation and analysis of MIPEX and comparison of integration policies of South Korea and other countries, suggestions are made for the development of a social integration policy index that meets the conditions of South Korea. Results: Although South Korea’s immigrant social integration policy is in a leading position in Asia especially in multicultural education area but compared to the Top countries in MIPEX, some improvement still need to be made. It was showing a trend of regression with increased difficulty in obtaining permanent residency. MIPEX's completely Europe-centered evaluation standards, ignoring illegal immigrants and only focusing on legal immi-grants, and ignoring the actual implementation of policies are all reasons for its limitations of application in South Korea. Conclusion: It is necessary to consider the conditions of South Korea and formulate policy indicators that conform to the society during the development of the Korean social integration policy index. The targets of the social integration policy should include all immigrants, and the actual implementation of the policy should be reflected in the evaluation. According to the specific conditions of the country, citizen participation, gender equality, and social security are policy elements that can be added to the index.

Positive Association of TEAD1 With Schizophrenia in a Northeast Chinese Han Population

        Yang Sun,Lin Wen,Yi-Yang Luo,Wen-Juan Hu,Hui-Wen Ren,Ye Lv,Cong Zhang,Ping Gao,Li-Na Xuan,Guan-Yu Wang,Cheng-Jie Li,Zhi-Xin Xiang,Zhi-Lin Luan 대한신경정신의학회 2023 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.20 No.12

Objective Schizophrenia is a complex and devastating psychiatric disorder with a strong genetic background. However, much uncertainty still exists about the role of genetic susceptibility in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. TEA domain transcription factor 1 (TEAD1) is a transcription factor associated with neurodevelopment and has modulating effects on various nervous system diseases. In the current study, we performed a case–control association study in a Northeast Chinese Han population to explore the characteristics of pathogenic <i>TEAD1</i> polymorphisms and potential association with schizophrenia. Methods We recruited a total of 721 schizophrenia patients and 1,195 healthy controls in this study. The 9 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the gene region of <i>TEAD1</i> were selected and genotyped. Results The genetic association analyses showed that five SNPs (rs12289262, rs6485989, rs4415740, rs7113256, and rs1866709) were significantly different between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls in allele or/and genotype frequencies. After Bonferroni correction, the association of three SNPs (rs4415740, rs7113256, and rs1866709) with schizophrenia were still evident. Haplotype analysis revealed that two strong linkage disequilibrium blocks (rs6485989-rs4415740-rs7113256 and rs16911710-rs12364619-rs1866709) were globally associated with schizophrenia. Four haplotypes (C-C-C and T-T-T, rs6485989-rs4415740-rs7113256; G-T-A and G-T-G, rs16911710-rs12364619-rs1866709) were significantly different between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls. Conclusion The current findings indicated that the human <i>TEAD1</i> gene has a genetic association with schizophrenia in the Chinese Han population and may act as a susceptibility gene for schizophrenia.
