        Use of insulin detemir in dogs with diabetes mellitus

        Insulin detemir is a long-acting basal insulin analogue recently introduced in veterinary medicine for treatment of canine diabetes mellitus. As there are only limited studies in dogs, long-term evaluation of insulin detemir in veterinary medicine is required. In this study, we investigated trends in12-hour blood glucose concentration during hospitalization and evaluated initial and following doses of insulin detemir for several months in six diabetic dogs. The mean levels of blood glucose over 12-hour periods were between 113.5 to 327.2 mg/dL, and the average glucose nadir was 103 mg/dL in the six dogs. The dogs were treated with a mean dosage of 0.24 U/kg of insulin detemir, but hypoglycemia was observed in four of the dogs at the first monthly follow-up. Thus, insulin doses were adjusted according to the nadir levels of glucose observed during the follow-up periods (range, 1 to 16 months). The total range of insulin doses throughout the study period was between 0.1 and 0.4 U/kg. Changes in insulin doses in each dog during the follow-up period were not variable. We suggest that insulin detemir might be not only an alternative choice against traditional insulin for patients with insulin resistance or concurrent disease but also an effective home therapy medication in canine patients with DM. This study could help inform veterinary practitioners regarding the use of insulin detemir for canine insulin-dependent DM.

      • Enrofloxacin과 colistin의 복합제(Enroco)의 아급성 독성시험

        The study was carried out to evaluate toxicity of enrofloxacin and colistin complex (Enroco) with a dose of 10 ㎎/㎏/day, 20 ㎎/㎏/day and 40 ㎎/㎏/day via oral administration for 3 weeks in ICR mice. All procedures of the test were performed by the established regulation of Korean National Institute of Safety Research (1994. 4. 14). Appearance, behavior, mortality and food consumption of treated groups were not affected during the experimental periods. No significant does-related changes of the combined antibacterials were found in urinalysis, eye examination, hematology, serum chemistry, and organ weight. No histopathological lesions were observed in both control and treatment groups. Our results strongly suggested that no toxic changes were found in mice treated orally with enrofloxacin-colistin complex for 3 weeks.

        Abnormal gaits such as in-toeing gait and out-toeing gait have been known to cause various types of physiological disorders in human body. Therefore, many researches up to date have been dedicated to solve this issue. However, many of the previous researches have been limited in that they hardly considered a minimal use of sensors to analyze abnormal gaits, leading to a low efficiency due to unwanted power consumption. Here, we aimed to examine what parameters or axes of the sensors can be minimized to tell a minute difference between normal and abnormal gait patterns. For this purpose, we synchronized a 9-axes motion sensor (accelerator, gyroscope, and compass) with force sensing resistor (FSR) sensors to compartmentalize the valid measurement range between heel strike(initial contact of the foot) and toe off (final contact of the foot). Through this synchronization, we found out how the number of axes in sensors could be optimized for minimal power consumption which is necessary for manufacturing wearable healthcare devices at an affordable cost.

        There are a couple of measurement standards in measuring the absorption coefficient of building materials. Impedance tube method and reverberation room method are those standardized absorption coefficient measurement methods. While applicable to the development stage of certain absorptive materials and the measurement of random incident absorption coefficient of multi layered absorption complex, they are unable to be applied to in-situ measurement. There are needs for the in-situ measurement for the assessment of the efficient of absorption materials and for the remodelling design of existing rooms. This research deals with an in-situ absorption coefficient measurement system which is based on the calculation of energy from impulse response of incident and reflected signal on the same axis

      • Development of Cementation Process for Radioactive Sludges

        Wet solid wastes including spent ion exchange resins, evaporator concentrates and sludges require solidification to transform wastes into an acceptable solid, monolithic form for final disposal. The development of the process control program for the solidification of radioactive sludges generated at nuclear power plants has been in progress to provide reasonable assurance that the solidified product will meet the established waste acceptance criteria for solidified waste. A mobile solidification system to produce the solidified waste in the size of a 200 L drum was used, which adopts the in-line mixing method where the waste and binder are mixed and then transferred to the disposable container. To simulate radioactive sludges, non-radioactive sludges are synthesized and the specimens are prepared by using them. The qualification tests on the prepared specimens including the compressive strength test, the thermal cycling test, the irradiation test, the leach test, the immersion test, etc. have been performed to qualify recipes for a range of waste compositions. The results of the tests will be analyzed and discussed.

      • 온도변화에 따른 CFRP 적층재의 충격손상에 관한 실험적 연구

        In this paper, the effects of temperature change (low and high temperature) on the impact damages of CFRP laminates was experimentally studied. Composite laminates used for this experiment are CF/EPOXY orthotropic laminated plates, which have two-interfaces [0˚_6/90˚_6]_s and [0˚₄/90˚₄]_s. and CF/PEEK orthotropic laminated plates, which have two-interfaces [0˚₄/90˚₄]_s. And, this study aims experimentally to present the interrelations between the impact energy vs. impact damages (i.e. delamination area and matrix crack) of CFRP laminates (CF/EPOXY, CF/PEEK) subjected to FOD(Foreign Object Damage) under various temperatures.

      • 경도관 동맥색전술을 이용한 비정상 자궁출혈의 치료

        Objective : Our purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the transcatheter arterial embolization for the management of abnormal uterine bleeding. Materials and Methods : 14 patients with massive or recurrent uterine bleeding underwent percutaneous transcatheter arterial embolization between February 2003 and September 2004. We reviewed 14 cases of uterine artery or internal iliac artery embolization using gelfoam or PVA particles. Results : Good management of uterine bleeding was achieved in 13 of 14(93%) cases. The cause of abnormal uterine bleeding was myoma(5 case), post D & E bleeding(3), acquired vascular malformation(3), pseudoaneurysm(1), adenomyosis(1), and endometrial hyperplasia(1). Conclusion : Transcatheter artery embolization is an effective and life-saving procedure in massive or recurrent uterine bleeding. Early diagnosis and prompt transcatheter arterial embolization is a useful mangement of uterine bleeding.

      • 항공우주용 복합재튜브의 충격압궤특성에 관한 연구

        본 연구의 목적은 준정적 및 충격실험에 대한 CFRP 박육부재의 에너지흡수특성에 관하여 고찰하고자 한다. 준정적실험은 신강좌굴실험기를, 충격실험은 수직식 충격압궤실험장치를 사용하였으며, 총 178개의 CFRP 박육부재에 대하여 준정적 및 충격압궤실험을 수행하였다. CFRP 원형관의 압궤실험시 그 응답특성은 매우 복잡하며, 압궤과정중 상이한 역학적 상호관계에 의존하게 된다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 적층조건을 갖는 박육부재의 압궤특성과 흡수에너지에 관하여 실험후 고찰하였다. 그 결과 CFRP 박육부재의 에너지 흡수 특성은 초기결함(Trigger)과 계면수 등에 관한 다양한 함수로 나타났으며, 일반적으로 CT-타입의 CFRP 박육부재의 에너지 흡수특성이 다른 박육부재에 비해 가장 높음을 알수 있었다. The purpose of this study is to investigate on the energy absorption characteristics of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) tubes on quasi-static and impact tests. Quasi-static and impact compression tests were performed on 178 tubes. Static compression tests have been carried out using the static testing machine(Shin-gang buckling testing machine) and impact compression tests have been carried out using the vertical crushing testing machine. When such tubes are subjected to crushing loads, the response is complex and depends on the interaction between the different mechanisms that control the crushing process. The collapse characteristics and energy absorption of a variety of tubes have been examined. The results varied significantly as a function of trigger and interlaminar number. In general, the CT-type tubes absorbed more energy than the others.

        Correlation between Sestrin-2 and PERK Signaling in Matured Porcine Oocytes according to ER-stress during In Vitro Maturation

        Sestrin-2 (SESN2) as a stress-metabolic protein is known for its anti-oxidative effects as a downstream factor of PERK pathways in mammalian cells. However, the expression patterns of SESN2 in conjunction with the UPR signaling against to ER stress on porcine oocyte maturation in vitro, have not been reported. Therefore, we confirmed the expression pattern of SESN2 protein, for which to examine the relationship between PERK signaling and SESN2 in porcine oocyte during IVM. We investigated the SESN2 expression patterns using Western blot analysis in denuded oocytes (DOs), cumulus cells (CCs), and cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) at 22 and 44 h of IVM. As expected, the SESN2 protein level significantly increased (p < 0.01) in porcine COCs during 44 h of IVM. We investigated the meiotic maturation after applying ER stress inhibitor in various concentration (50, 100 and 200 μM) of tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA). We confirmed significant increase (p < 0.05) of meiotic maturation rate in TUDCA 200 μM treated COCs for 44 h of IVM. Finally, we confirmed the protein level of SESN2 and meiotic maturation via regulating ER-stress by only tunicamycin (Tm), only TUDCA, and Tm + TUDCA treatment in porcine COCs. As a result, treatment of the TUDCA following Tm pre-treatment reduced SESN2 protein level in porcine COCs. In addition, SESN2 protein level significantly reduced in only TUDCA treated porcine COCs. Our results suggest that the SESN2 expression is related to the stress mediator response to ER stress through the PERK signaling pathways in porcine oocyte maturation.

        2000년대 사극영화의 신화적 속성 연구 : 프라이의 대위법적 양식이론과 애니미즘 개념으로 본 <명량>, <안시성>, <황산벌>

        이 글은 2000년대 이후 한국 사극영화들을 현대적 신화의 입장에서 보고자 한다. 특히 현대의 일부 사극영화들이 그 사회의 신화로서 기능하고 있다는 특질에 주목하였는데, <명량>, <안시성>, <황산벌> 세 작품을 대상 작품으로 삼았다. 선정의 이유는, 세 작품 모두 전근대시대 나라의 명운이 걸린 전쟁을 배경으로 하는 영웅서사를 다루고 있기 때문에 ‘한 나라의 신화’라는 속성에 비춰 생각해볼 여지가 충분하다고 생각했기 때문이다. 방법으로는 각 작품의 서사양식을 분석하면서 작품의 미학적인 특징과 현대사회의 신화라는 사회문화적 특징의 연결점을 찾아보고자 하였다. 여기에 유용하게 활용된 것은 노스럽 프라이의 ‘역사비평-양식의 이론’이었다. 사극에서 신화적 성격이 구축되는 것은 현대 사회에서 신화적 역할을 하는 사극의 고유한 기능과 그 속에 들어있는 물신으로서 애니미즘의 지원을 받아 이루어짐을 볼 수 있었다. <명량>, <안시성>, <황산벌>의 인물들을 분석하면서, 주인공을 중심으로 작품의 주조를 이루는 서사양식은 하나일 수 있지만 다른 주변인물들을 통해서 혹은 주인공 캐릭터가 묘사되는 다층적인 측면을 통해 다른 여러 서사양식들이 한 작품 내에 공존하면서 순환할 수 있다는 것이 확인 되었다. 서사양식의 이런 순환과 공존의 속성을 바탕으로 현대 사극영화들이 신화와 사실주의를 결합해내는 방법을 찾아보았다. ‘전위’(轉位, displacement)라고도 할 수 있는 이 방식을 <명량>, <안시성>, <황산벌>에서 살펴보니 공통적으로 그것은 애니미즘이라는 미학적 전략의 활용이었다. 이 애니미즘은 <명량>에서는 울돌목, <안시성>에서는 장궁, <황산벌>에서는 인간장기를 통해 각각 표현되었다. 이들을 통해 애니미즘이 전위 역할을 하며, 실제 역사를 다룬 사극영화에 신화적 분위기를 창출함과 동시에 이들 사극영화가 현대사회의 신화로 기능하는 데 기술적으로 기여하고 있음을 찾아볼 수 있었다. This article attempts to see Korean historical films in the 2000s from the perspective of modern myths. In particular, paying attention to the characteristic that some contemporary historical films function as myths in the society, < Roaring Currents >, < The Great Battle >, < Once Upon a Time in the Battlefield > were selected as the subjects. As the method, while analyzing the narrative style of each work, it was trying to find the connection between the aesthetic characteristic of the works and the socio-cultural characteristic of the myth of modern society. What was useful here was Northrop Frye’s “Historical Criticism: Theory of Modes.” Analyzing the characters of those three films, it was confirmed that although there may be one main narrative style(‘mode’) focusing on the main character, several other narrative styles can coexist and circulate in one work through other characters or through multi-layered aspects in which the main character is depicted. Based on this attribute of circulation and coexistence, I tried to find a way that modern historical films combine myth and realism. Looking at this method, which can also be called “displacement”, in the three films, it was the use of an aesthetic strategy called “animism” in common. This animism was expressed through ‘Uldolmok’, ‘the great bow’, and ‘the human chess game’. Through them, it was found that animism acting as ‘displacement’ creates a mythical atmosphere in historical films dealing with actual history, and at the same time, contributes technically to these historical films functioning as myths in modern society.
