Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a common disease with a high mortality rate due to right ventricular dysfunction and underfilling of the left ventricle. We present a case of a 33-year-old man with hemodynamically compromised massive PE. His left atrium was collapsed with marked dilatation of the right atrium and ventricle on multi-detector-row CT scans. The patient was treated with an intracatheter injection of a mutant tissue-type plasminogen activator and subsequently showed clinical and radiological improvements. The small left atrial size in combination with a right ventricular pressure overload was considered to be an adjunctive sign of hemodynamically compromised massive PE.

<P>Spin-wave eigenmodes in a disk-shaped FeB nanomagnet were investigated using magnetic tunnel junctions with a FeB magnetic layer and MgO barrier. Noise spectrum measurements for a perpendicularly magnetized junction of 120 nm in diameter showed thermal excitation of distinct spin-wave modes. The measured spectra were compared with analytical calculations and numerical simulations. As a result, the observed modes were classified as spin-wave eigenmodes with various nodal circles and nodal diameter modes by taking into account splitting between directional spin-wave modes originating from dynamic dipolar interaction instead of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. These results provide a fundamental understanding of spin dynamics in nanosize spintronic devices.</P>

<P>In order to study the effect of trace impurities on high-cycle fatigue damage of ultrafine grained (UFG) copper, fatigue tests were carried out for two samples: oxygen-free copper (OFC, 99.99 wt% Cu) and deoxidized low-phosphorous copper (DLP, 99.95 wt% Cu). After the processing by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) using eight passes, equiaxed grains with an average size of 250 nm were formed for both the samples. Fatigue strength of UFG copper was enhanced by the impurities. The formation behavior of surface damage and the change in surface hardness was monitored. A close relationship was observed between the change in hardness and the formation behavior of surface damage. The physical background of the effect of trace impurities on the fatigue damage was discussed from the viewpoints of surface damage formation behavior.</P>
