Yield of popular rice varieties such as Swarna grown in rainfed lowlands and Madhukar grown in flood prone areas needs to be continuously improved. Recombinant inbred lines (RILs) were developed from the cross between two indica cultivars Madhukar and Swarna. QTLs were mapped using 110 markers in 168 RILs. In all, 26 QTLs were mapped for yield and five related traits on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12. QTL for plant height and days to flowering were co-located between RM23147 - RM337 on chromosome 8. RM251, RM314, and RM1135 were significantly associated with plant height and OsYSL17 was significantly linked with grain yield. Epistatic interaction was detected for plant height and number of tillers. Several candidate genes reported for yield and related traits underlie the QTL regions.
Biomimetic Designing of Functional Silk Nanotopography Using Self-assembly

<P>In nature inorganic organic building units create multifunctional hierarchical architectures. Organic silk protein is particularly attractive in this respect because of its micro-nanoscale structural blocks that are attributed to sophisticated hierarchical assembly imparting flexibility and compressibility to designed biohybrid materials. In the present study, aqueous silk fibroin is assembled to form nano/microtopography on inorganic silica surface via a facile diffusion-limited aggregation process. This process is driven by electrostatic interaction and only possible at a specified aminated surface chemistry. The self-assembled topography depends on the age and concentration of protein solution as well as on the surface charge distribution of the template. The self-assembled silk trails closely resemble natural cypress leaf architecture, which is considered a structural analogue of neuronal cortex. This assembled surface significantly enhances anchorage of neuronal cell and cytoskeletal extensions, providing an effective nano/microtopographical cue for cellular recognition and guidance.</P>

Purpose: This study compared a) crestal bone loss, b) implant stability quotient (ISQ), c) probing depth, d) denture fracture incidence, and e) posterior residual ridge resorption (RRR) of two implant and single implant-supported overdentures and assessed the quality of life (QOL) was evaluated before and after giving the prosthesis. Materials and Methods: The study was a randomized longitudinal cohort study. Eighty subjects were selected for the study and divided randomly into two groups (n=40): Group 2IOD— two implant-supported overdentures; Group 1IOD— Single implant-supported overdentures. Except for the number of implants, the common surgical, implant, and the prosthetic protocol was followed for the two groups. An oral health impact profile EDENT questionnaire was completed by the patients before giving the implant-supported overdenture and after one year of prosthesis delivery to evaluate the effects of oral health on the quality of life. Probing pocket depth (mm), ISQ (resonance frequency analysis), denture fracture incidence, posterior RRR (mm), and crestal bone loss (mm) were assessed and compared at the baseline and one year after implant placement (early loading protocol) for the two groups. Standard statistical tests, including an unpaired t-test with SPSS software, were used for the analysis. Results: The average crestal bone loss in group 2IOD was insignificantly lower than group 1IOD. The ISQ values were higher for group 2IOD than group 1IOD at one year. The ISQ values for both groups at 12 months were similar (P>0.05). The probing depth at both time intervals yielded insignificant intergroup differences. No denture fracture was reported in either group. At 12 months, posterior ridge resorption in group 2IOD was 0.33±0.08, which was significantly lower than in group 1IOD. Conclusions: A one implant-supported overdenture is a comparable treatment option with two implant-supported overdentures for edentulous patients, having the advantages of lower cost and less surgical trauma. However, there may be more posterior RRR with this treatment modality.

The Indus script is an undeciphered script of the ancient world. In spite of numerous attempts over several decades, the script has defied universally acceptable decipherment. In a recent series of papers (Yadav et al. 2010; Rao et al. 2009a, b; Yadav et al. 2008a, b) we have analysed the sequences of Indus signs which demonstrate presence of a rich syntax and logic in its structure. Here we focus on the structural design of individual signs of the Indus script. Our study is based on the sign list given in the concordance of Mahadevan (1977) which consists of 417 distinct signs. We analyse the structure of all signs in the sign list of Indus script and visually identify three types of design elements of Indus signs namely basic signs, provisional basic signs and modifiers. These elements combine in a variety of ways to generate the entire set of Indus signs. By comparing the environment of compound signs with all possible sequences of constituent basic signs, we show that sign compounding (ligaturing) and sign modification seem to change the meaning or add value to basic signs rather than save writing space. The study aims to provide an understanding of the general makeup and mechanics of design of Indus signs.

Damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerves (RLNs) is one of the dreaded complications of thyroid and parathyroid surgery (1). In case of anatomical variations this risk is further increased. Terminal branching of RLN occurs anywhere from several centimeters from the cricothyroid muscle to within the larynx itself (2). Prevalence of extra-laryngeal branching (ELB) is reported to be around 60% (3). Another anatomical variation is anastomosis between RLN, and the cervical sympathetic chain known as sympathetic inferior laryngeal anastomotic branch (SILAB) which is rare (1%–2%) (4). We recently operated upon a patient of papillary thyroid carcinoma and encountered both these anatomic variations.

Bacteria have a particular strategy to invade the host immune system by forming an undetectable dormant state that may resuscitate and cause disease even after inhabiting for years in a host body. Several mechanisms are known to be responsible for bacterial dormancy, among them the hipBA toxin-antitoxin (TA) system which was initially identified in Escherichia coli. Here we explore the genomic distribution and functional association of hipBA TA homologs from an entomopathogenic bacterium Xenorhabdus nematophila. This bacterium is a sym biotic model with the nematode Steinernema carpocapsae. We found that HipA toxin homologs are more closely related than HipB antitoxins and have satisfactory adenine (for HipA homologs) and nucleic acid (for HipB homologs) ligand partners with a typical TA interaction network that may promote the X. nematophila towards a stringent response to form the dormant state. Such homologs distribution is an inclusion in the current TA repertoire of X. nematophila.
