<B>Abstract</B><P>A new approach is proposed to analyze Bremsstrahlung X-rays that are emitted from laser-produced plasmas (LPP) and are measured by a stack type spectrometer. This new method is based on a spectral tomographic reconstruction concept with the variational principle for optimization, without referring to the electron energy distribution of a plasma. This approach is applied to the analysis of some experimental data obtained at a few major laser facilities to demonstrate the applicability of the method. Slope temperatures of X-rays from LPP are determined with a two-temperature model, showing different spectral characteristics of X-rays depending on laser properties used in the experiments.</P>

Double-differential cross section (DDX) data of nucleon-actinide reactions is crucial for the study of nuclear waste transmutation by accelerator driven systems. Charged particle emission data is strongly required as well as the neutron data up to several Gev. In the present study, we measured double-differential cross sections of light charged particle productions for proton induced reactions on ^(232)Th at 360 Mev. The experiment was carried out at the PHASOTRON facility of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna.The light charged particles (LCPs) emitted from nuclear reactions were detected by ΔE-E counter telescopes. Eight detector systems were used. Four of them were comprised of two plastic scintillator plates and BGO crystal. The other four consisted of two silicon semiconductor detectors and two scintillation counters, a cubic CsI(TI) (40 mm long) crystal and plate plastic scintillator. The four identical detectors on each side were placed at laboratory angles of 20˚. 40˚, 70˚ and 105˚ with respect to the beam axis. Resultant DDX spectra of protons and deuterons were compared with intranuclear cascade (INC) model.
A Magnetic Amplifier using Nanocrystalline Soft Magnetic Material

A Magnetic Amplifier using saturable reactor with nanocrystalline soft magnetic material is presented. A method of obtaining the frequency response is presented. Experimental results show that the method is adequate and practical. Moreover it is shown that the efficiency of the Magnetic Amplifier is comparable to the switching power supply with primary control, despite the existence of additional saturable reactors.

Modulation-doped ZnSe:Te samples, which indicate quite strong emissions at 2.68 (S1) and 2.42 (S2) eV at low temperatures, have been grown by using MBE. The samples consist of a ZnSe-ZnTe superstructure with ultra-thin ZnTe layers. The sample, which has S1 and S2 emission bands simultaneously, has a carrier transfer process from the S1 to the S2 state. The process leads to a super-linear dependence of the intensity of the S1 emission on the excitation intensity. We predict that the S1 and the S2 band construct a double well potential in the sample which indicates both emissions simultaneously. In order to investigate the relationship between the incidence of displaced abomasum and feeding, the actual feeding practices and chemical compositions of roughage were examined in 2 kinds of farms at Tokachi district in Hokkaido. Examination of animal health records revealed that the annual milk yield per cow in high incidence (H-DA) farms was significantly higher than that in low incidence (L-DA) farms. The amount of concentrates fed in H-DA farms tended to be higher than that in L-DA farms during lactation. Compared to L-DA farms, the amount of juicy roughage (corn silage and grass silage) and dry roughage (hay, hay cube and roll wrap silage) during lactation in H-DA farms tended to be higher and lower, respectively. Moreover, the amount of roughage and the ratio of roughage to concentrates in H-DA farms tended to be lower than in L-DA farms. The survey indicated that displaced abomasum was associated with insufficient feeding of dietary fiber and overfeeding of concentrates.
Design and Grasping Control of Rib-Reinforced Bending Soft Actuators by Vacuum Driven

This paper is concerned with developing a soft robot hand consisting of three Rib-Reinforced Vacuum-Driven Actuators that perform tasks requiring flexibility in the same workspace as humans. Most of the conventional soft actuators are powered by compressed air, which is easy to obtain the output, however, there is a risk of rupture. In consideration of workers’ and products’ safety, vacuum-driven soft actuators were developed to avoid rupture. In order to prevent undesirable buckling due to atmospheric pressure, resin ribs are appropriately placed inside to enable bending motion by vacuum drive. This soft actuator generated a maximum force of about 2.9 N at its tip. Furthermore, the tip force is controlled by the force feedback PID control, which was established by using the pressure-force characteristic of the soft actuators and could be controlled for a mixture of step, linear, and sinusoidal waves as the reference force inputs. In the experiments of grasping, the soft robot hand was able to grasp workpieces of various materials and shapes, including a plastic bottle with water (0.535 kg). In addition, by introducing the pressure feedback control, the soft robot hand achieved to gently grasp the paper balloon without changing its shape.
Photoluminescence of a Periodic Alloy of ZnSeTe Grown by Using MBE

Te-doped ZnSe indicates strong emission bands in the blue-green region at low temperatures. The ZnSe-ZnTe superlattices with thin ZnTe layers (less than 1 monolayer), whose X-ray proles show a trace of satellite peaks due to the superstructure, have very high photoluminescence (PL) efficiency at 2.3 eV at room temperature. In the samples that have no superstructure in the X-ray measurements, Te acts as an isoelectronic impurity indicating strong PL at only low temperatures. Ethnic Differences of two Non-synonymous Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms in CDA Gene

Cytidine deaminase, encoded by the CDA gene, catalyzes anti-cancer drugs gemcitabine and ara-C into their respective inactive metabolites. In CDA, two functionally significant non-synonymous polymorphisms, 79A>C (Lys27Gln) and 208G>A (Ala70Thr), have been found and their minor allele frequencies (MAFs) were reported in Japanese and Chinese patients and a relatively small numbers of healthy volunteers in Caucasians and Africans. In this study, we determined the MAFs of both polymorphisms in 200 healthy volunteers of Koreans, along with 206 Japanese, 200 Chinese-Americans, 150 Caucasian-Americans and 150 African-Americans to reveal ethnic differences. MAFs of 79A>C (Lys27Gln) were 0.153 in Koreans and 0.327 in Caucasian-Americans, 0.204 in Japanese, 0.155 in Chinese-Americans and 0.087 in African-Americans. MAFs of 208G>A (Ala70Thr) were 0.005 in Koreans and 0.022 in Japanese and the minor allele was not detected in Chinese-Americans, Caucasian-Americans or African-Americans. Thus possibly, MAF of 208G>A in Japanese is likely to be somewhat higher than in Koreans and Chinese-Americans. These data would provide fundamental and useful information for pharmacogenetic studies on cytidine deaminase-catalyzing drugs.
