We have developed biological signal measurement modules and PC-based data acquisition system. Biological signals included in this system are ECG, EEG, EMG, invasive blood pressure, respiration, and temperature. Parameters of each module can be controlled by PC through a data acquisition and control card. The data acquisition and control card can collect up to 16 channels of biological signals with sampling rate of 50~10,000Hz and 12-bit resolution. All measurement modules and data acquisition functions are controlled by microcontroller which receives commands from PC. All data transfers among PC, microcontroller, and ADC are done through a shared RAM access by polling method for real time operation. This system is being used in KKU BME Medical Instrumentation Laboratory in research areas such as ECG interpretation, high-resolution ECG, polysomnography, long-term monitoring of biological signals, design of intelligent alarm system, etc.

The needs for precision machining of micro to milli parts have been increased as the industry require high quality products, especially for the micro-machining of IT products. The ultra-precision machining system is essential for the micro machining of fine structures, which insures machining accuracy, low systematic and random error and repeatability. In this study, we developed micro machining system, which is equipped with air bearing stage for ultra precision machining and also we present the results of V-grooving experiments, conducted by the developed system, to verify the performance of system. The results show that the machined V-grooving had good accuracy with repeatable stability.
여성 요실금에서 Kontinence™와 Compact Elite™의 치료효과 비교

Biofeedback and pelvic floor electrical stimulation are new modalities that have been advocated for the treatment of female urinary incontinence. The aim of this study was to compare prospectively the therapeutic effect of Kontinence™(HMT Co., Korea) with Compact Elite™(ECL Co., France) in female urinary incontinence. All patients were evaluated with a complete history, physical examination, urinalysis, urine culture and urodynamic study. Eighteen patients were treated with Compact Elite™, and thirteen patients with Kontinence™. Enrolled patients had completed 8 office sessions consisting of biofeedback and intravaginal electrical stimulation according to the program of each machines. Overall treatment response was graded by patients on a scale of complete cure to aggravation. At two weeks after last session, overall improvement rate was 78% in Compact Elite™group and 92% in Kontinence™group(p>0.05). Overall patients' acceptability during treatment course was greater than 80% in both machines(p>0.05). There were no unexpected clinical findings during Kontinence™ treatment. After Kontinence™treatment, there were no laboratory changes including electrocardiography, complete blood count, liver function profile, and chest PA. These results showed that the biofeedback and electrical stimulation with Kontinence™was safe and moderately effective for female urinary incontinence comparable to Compact Elite™. However, long-term results of a larger patients are needed to ensure the therapeutic effect of Kontinence™.
Anisotropic Conductivity Tensor Imaging of <i>In Vivo</i> Canine Brain Using DT-MREIT

<P>We present in vivo images of anisotropic electrical conductivity tensor distributions inside canine brains using diffusion tensor magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography (DT-MREIT). The conductivity tensor is represented as a product of an ion mobility tensor and a scale factor of ion concentrations. Incorporating directional mobility information from water diffusion tensors, we developed a stable process to reconstruct anisotropic conductivity tensor images from measured magnetic flux density data using an MRI scanner. Devising a new image reconstruction algorithm, we reconstructed anisotropic conductivity tensor images of two canine brains with a pixel size of 1.25 mm. Though the reconstructed conductivity values matched well in general with those measured by using invasive probing methods, there were some discrepancies as well. The degree of white matter anisotropy was 2 to 4.5, which is smaller than previous findings of 5 to 10. The reconstructed conductivity value of the cerebrospinal fluid was about 1.3 S/m, which is smaller than previous measurements of about 1.8 S/m. Future studies of in vivo imaging experiments with disease models should follow this initial trial to validate clinical significance of DT-MREIT as a new diagnostic imaging modality. Applications in modeling and simulation studies of bioelectromagnetic phenomena including source imaging and electrical stimulation are also promising.</P>

The pig genome contains the gamma1 family of porcine endogenous retroviruses (PERVs), which are major obsta-cle to the development of successful xenotransplantation from pig to human. Long terminal repeats (LTRs) found in PERVs are known to be essential elements for the control of the transcriptional activity of single virus by different transcription factors (TFs). To identify transcribed PERV LTR elements, RT-PCR and DNA sequencing analyses were performed. Twenty-nine actively transcribed LTR elements were identified in the kidney tissues of the NIH-Miniature pig. These elements were divided into two major groups (I and II), and four minor groups (I-1, I-2, I-3, and II-1), by the presence of insertion and deletion (INDEL) se-quences. Group I elements showed strong transcriptional activity compared to group II elements. Four different LTR elements (PL1, PL2, PL3, and PL4) as representative of the groups were analyzed by using a transient transfection assay. The regulation of their promoter activity was inves-tigated by treatment with M.SssI (CpG DNA methyltrans-ferase) and garcinol (histone acetyltransferase inhibitor). The transcriptional activity of PERV LTR elements was significantly reduced by treatment with M.SssI. These data indicate that transcribed PERV LTR elements harbor suffi-cient promoter activity to regulate the transcription of a single virus, and the transcriptional activity of PERV LTRs may be controlled by DNA methylation events.

The use of an optical plate to enhance light efficiency of LED systems was suggested. The optical plate technology indicates that polymeric optical plates having optical patterns on themselves are placed on LED systems. We designed and manufactured an optical plate that enhance light efficiency, and verified its optical characteristics in this study. The shape and the size of the spherical lens patterns were designed based on the lens formula including the refraction indices of air and PMMA, thickness of the optical component and the optical distance. To manufacture the optical plate having the designed spherical lens patterns, a metal mold was machined by ultra-fine punching machining technology. Using the ultra-fine punching machining system, spherical lens patterns with 0.45 mm in height, 1.15 mm in diameter were successfully machined on the top of a mold of 90 * 60 mm2 size. Using the machined mold and transparent PMMA, an optical plate with the spherical lens patterns was molded by injection molding technology. The optical plate was placed on the LED system, and the luminance was measured with and without the optical plate, and as a result the average and the maximum intensity increased by 1.4 times and 1.3 times respectively.

<P>We evaluated the performance of the lately developed electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system KHU Mark1 through time-difference imaging experiments of canine and human lungs. We derived a multi-frequency time-difference EIT (mftdEIT) image reconstruction algorithm based on the concept of the equivalent homogeneous complex conductivity. Imaging experiments were carried out at three different frequencies of 10, 50 and 100 kHz with three different postures of right lateral, sitting (or prone) and left lateral positions. For three normal canine subjects, we controlled the ventilation using a ventilator at three tidal volumes of 100, 150 and 200 ml. Three human subjects were asked to breath spontaneously at a normal tidal volume. Real- and imaginary-part images of the canine and human lungs were reconstructed at three frequencies and three postures. Images showed different stages of breathing cycles and we could interpret them based on the understanding of the proposed mftdEIT image reconstruction algorithm. Time series of images were further analyzed by using the functional EIT (fEIT) method. Images of human subjects showed the gravity effect on air distribution in two lungs. In the canine subjects, the morphological change seems to dominate the gravity effect. We could also observe that two different types of ventilation should have affected the results. The KHU Mark1 EIT system is expected to provide reliable mftdEIT images of the human lungs. In terms of the image reconstruction algorithm, it would be worthwhile including the effects of three-dimensional current flows inside the human thorax. We suggest clinical trials of the KHU Mark1 for pulmonary applications.</P>
