A Wide Spectrum of Axial Mesodermal Dysplasia Complex With Rhombencephalic Anomaly: A Case Report

Axial mesodermal dysplasia complex (AMDC) arises in variable combinations of craniocaudal anomalies such as musculoskeletal deformities, neuroschisis, or rhombencephalic developmental disorders. To the best of our knowledge, the co-existence of AMDC with associated musculoskeletal anomalies, medullary neuroschisis with mirror movements, and cranial nerve anomalies has not yet been reported. Here, we report the case of a 4-year-old boy whose clinical features were suggestive of Goldenhar syndrome and Poland syndrome with Sprengel deformity. Moreover, he showed mirror movements in his hands suspected of rhombencephalic malformation, and infranuclear-type facial nerve palsy of the left side of his face, the opposite side to the facial anomalies of Goldenhar syndrome. After conducting radiological studies, he was diagnosed with medullary neuroschisis without pontine malformations and Klippel-Feil syndrome with rib anomalies. Based on these findings, we propose that clinical AMDC can be accompanied by a wide variety of musculoskeletal defects and variable degrees of central nervous system malformations. Therefore, in addition to detailed physical and neurological examinations, imaging studies should be considered in AMDC.
Non-destructive Screening of Genetically Modified Soybean Using Near Infrared Spectroscopy

NIR spectroscopy combined with multivariate analysis after the appropriate spectral data pre-treatment has been proved to be a very powerful tool for judgment of the relative pattern of the objects that have very similar properties. In this study, 500 GMO soybean seeds and, 500 non-GMO ones were measured in NIR reflectance mode. Principal component analysis (PCA), and discriminant analysis (DA) were applied to classify soybean with different genes into two groups (GMO and non-GMO). Calibrations were developed using DA regression with the cross-validation technique. The results show that differences between GMO and non-GMO soybeans do exist and excellent classification can be obtained after optimizing spectral pre-treatment. The raw spectra with DA model after the second derivative pre-treatment had the best satisfactory calibration and prediction abilities, with 97% accuracy. The results in the present study show NIR spectroscopy together with chemometrics techniques could be used to differentiate GMO soybean, which offers the benefit of avoiding time-consuming, costly and laborious chemical and sensory analysis.

This study aimed to determine the relationship between the C825T polymorphism in the G-protein ${\beta}$3-subunit (GNB3) gene and the response to citalopram in a Korean population with major depressive disorder (MDD). Citalopram was administered for 8 weeks to the 84 MDD patients who completed this study. All subjects were examined using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, and the severity of depression was assessed using the 21-item Hamilton Depression Rating (HAMD-21) scale. A main effect of an interaction of genotype with time on the decrease in the HAMD-21 score during the 8-week study period was not found. ANOVA revealed no significant effects of the GNB3 C825T polymorphism on the decrease in the HAMD-21 score at each time period. Although the C825T polymorphism of the GNB3 gene may affect the pathogenesis of MDD, our results do not support the hypothesis that this polymorphism is involved in the therapeutic response to citalopram in Korean patients with MDD.

<P>A novel process in the synthesis of SiC microtubes is proposed, based on modified CVD process. This process was adopted to siliconize the carbon fibers that perform with relatively small surface area, either partially or completely, into the SiC microtubes with large surface area. An oxidic vapor generated from a metal reacts with a carbon solid preform, which leads to a carbide possessing with a unique morphology. The carbon fiber preforms have been unidirectionally arranged into alumina tube, and then a solid-vapor reaction between carbon fiber preforms and SiO vapor originated from the mixture powder pack of Si and SiO2 has been carried out in restoration atmosphere (argon gas/hydrogen gas = 80/20) at 1450°C. The synthesized SiC.C composites were re-sintered with the modified mixture powder pack of Si, SiO2, Al, and Al2O3 at the same condition, in which amounts of Al and Al2O3 employed as a impurity have been controlled under 1 wt% with different mole ratios (Al2O3 : Al = 1:1, 2:1, 3:1). Two kinds of SiO and AlO vapors are generated in the second step reaction process, which react with carbon residuals. The quantitative and qualitative properties of the SiC micorotubes were analyzed by using TGA, SEM, and XRD. The inner morphology of the SiC micorotubes is dependent on the impurity concentration and the gas nature, showing the grains grown with membrane type in the second reaction process because of the impurity.</P>
A20 attenuates allergic airway inflammation in mice.

<P>TNF receptor 1 can activate signaling pathways leading to the activation of NF-kappaB. A20, an NF-kappaB-inducible protein, negatively regulates these signaling pathways and acts as an anti-inflammatory mediator. Therefore, A20 is viewed as a potential therapeutic target for inflammatory disease. In this study, we examined the effect of A20 on an OVA-induced allergic airway inflammation model in mice. We used an adenovirus containing A20 cDNA (Ad-A20) that was delivered intratracheally before OVA challenge. Single administration of Ad-A20 reduced airway inflammatory cell recruitment and peribronchiolar inflammation and suppressed the production of various cytokines in bronchoalveolar fluid. In addition, Ad-A20 suppressed mucus production and prevented the development of airway hyperresponsiveness. The protective effect of Ad-A20 was mediated by the inhibition of the NF-kappaB signaling pathway. Taken together, our results suggest that the development of an immunoregulatory strategy based on A20 may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of allergic asthma.</P>
