        A new mosaic der(18)t(1;18)(q32.1;q21.3) with developmental delay and facial dysmorphism

        We report the case of a 22-month-old boy with a new mosaic partial unbalanced translocation of 1q and 18q. The patient was referred to our Pediatric Department for developmental delay. He showed mild facial dysmorphism, physical growth retardation, a hearing disability, and had a history of patent ductus arteriosus. White matter abnormality on brain magnetic resonance images was also noted. His initial routine chromosomal analysis revealed a normal 46,XY karyotype. In a microarray-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) analysis, subtle copy number changes in 1q32.1-q44 (copy gain) and 18q21.33-18q23 (copy loss) suggested an unbalanced translocation of t(1;18). Repeated chromosomal analysis revealed a low-level mosaic translocation karyotype of 46,XY,der(18)t(1;18) (q32.1;q21.3)[12]/46,XY[152]. Because his parents had normal karyotypes, his translocation was considered to be de novo. The abnormalities observed in aCGH were confirmed by metaphase fluorescent in situ hybridization. We report this patient as a new karyotype presenting developmental delay, facial dysmorphism, cerebral dysmyelination, and other abnormalities.

        Elimination of Saturated Fatty Acids, Toxic Cyclic nonapeptide and Cyanogen Glycoside Components from Flax Seed Oil

        Flax seed(Linseed, Linum usitatissimum L.) and its oil, a richest source of alpha-linolenic acid(ALA)(${\omega}-3$), contain saturated fatty acids, neurotoxic cyanogen glycosides and immuno-suppressive cyclic-nonapeptides. Present paper describes the development of two chemical processes, Process-A and -B, to remove saturated fatty acids and to destroy cyclic nonapeptides and cyanogen glycosides from flax seed oil. Process-A consists of three major steps, i.e., extraction of fatty acid mixture by alkaline saponification, removal of saturated fatty acid by urea-complexation, and triglyceride reconstruction of unsaturated fatty acid via fatty acyl-chloride activation using oxalyl chloride. Process-B consists of preparation of fatty acid ethyl ester by transesterification, elimination of saturated fatty acid ester by urea-complexation, and reconstruction of triglyceride by interesterification with glycerol-triacetate (triacetin). The destruction of lipophilic cyclic nonapeptide during saponification or transesterification processes could be demonstrated indirectly by the disappearance of antibacterial activity of bacitracin, an analogous cyclic-decapeptide. The cyanogen glycosides were found only in the dregs after hexane extraction, but not in the flax seed oil. The reconstructed triglyceride of flax seed oil, obtained by these two different pathways after elimination of saturated fatty acid and toxic components, showed agreeable properties as edible oil in terms of taste, acid value, iodine and peroxide value, glycerine content, and antioxidant activity.

        Efficacy Comparison of Different Acupuncture Treatments for Hot Flashes: A Systematic Review with Network Meta-Analysis

        The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review and network meta-analysis to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of various types of acupuncture for menopausal hot flashes (HF). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were retrieved from 8 electronic databases, and the risk of bias was evaluated for the included studies. Pairwise meta-analysis and network meta-analysis were performed using Review Manager and R software for indirect comparison and ranking, respectively. In total, 23 RCTs (2,302 patients) were eligible for systematic review, of which 10 were included in network meta-analysis. Network meta-analysis showed manual acupuncture (MA) had the highest probability of reducing HF frequency and severity, followed by sham acupuncture (SA), electroacupuncture, usual care, or no treatment; furthermore, warm acupuncture significantly improved menopause-specific quality of life compared with MA or electroacupuncture. Compared with hormone replacement therapy, acupuncture had less efficacy in reducing HF frequency but enhanced menopause-specific quality of life. There was no significant difference between MA and SA in mitigating HF. The existing evidence showed that MA could be used for alleviating menopausal HF. However, it is recommended that more high-quality RCTs should be performed.

        Orthosiphon stamineus Reduces Appetite and Visceral Fat in Rats

        To evaluate whether Orthosiphon stamineus (OS) reduces appetite and fat deposition, food intake and visceral fat mass following treatment with OS (450 mg/kg/day, per oral) for 2 weeks in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were measured. Hypothalamic neuropeptides associated with appetite regulation was also analyzed. Two weeks of OS treatment reduced food intake and visceral fat mass compared to saline-treated SD rats. OS treatment for 2 weeks elevated the expression of proopiomelanocortin (POMC) in the hypothalamus, whereas neuropeptide Y (NPY) expression was decreased, which may be associated with the elevation of plasma leptin concentration in OS-treated rats. Methanol and butanol extracts of OS increased leptin mRNA expression in 3T3-L1 cells in dose-dependent manner. Acute study showed intraperitoneal injection of various concentrations of OS increased POMC expression in the hypothalamus, whereas NPY expression decreased dose-dependently. These results suggest that OS reduces appetite, which may have resulted from the increased expression of POMC and decreased expression of NPY in the hypothalamus in association with the elevation of leptin. OS could be a medicinal food applicable for body weight control.

        Cultural characteristics and phylogenetic relationships based on RFLP analysis in Pleurotus species

        Pleurotus has increased rapidly production and consumption because of highly nutritional value, natural healthy food and so on. The basic studies for Pleurotus need for development of mushroom industry. This study was to investigate the cultural characteristics among 15 strains of 6 species and to analyze their phylogenetic relationships. The cultural characteristics were investigated by mycelial growth activity at different media, temperature and pH. The optimum media for mycelial growth were YM and MCM in most species. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth were $25^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$. The optimum pH for mycelial growth were widly range from pH 5.1 to 7.4. Through the RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism) of IGS (intergenic spacer) I region in ribosomal DNA, it was analyzed phylogeny of interspecies and intraspecies. Each species was discriminated well as isolates within each species formed clade to be distinguished other species. P. florida was highly similar to P. floridanus, and P. flabellatus was P. cornucopiae. P. fuscus var. ferulae was highly similar to P. eryngii but discriminated different species in analysis of RFLP of IGS I region and showed different characteristics in mycelial culture. RFLP of IGS I region was useful of studying phylogenetic relationships of species and population.

      • Highly transparent and conductive oxide-metal-oxide electrodes optimized at the percolation thickness of AgO<sub>x</sub> for transparent silicon thin-film solar cells

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Highly transparent and conductive oxide-metal-oxide (OMO) electrodes comprising aluminum-doped zinc-oxide (AZO) and ultrathin Ag or oxygen (O<SUB>2</SUB>)-doped Ag (AgO<SUB>x</SUB>) metal layers were fabricated for use in thin-film silicon solar cells. The surface morphologies of the metal layers and the transparencies and conductivities of OMO electrodes were investigated near the percolation thickness values of the metal layers. The percolation metal thickness, which means the metal layer is morphologically continuous, could be used to optimize the transparent OMO electrode. Additionally, thin Ag-based OMO (AgO<SUB>x</SUB> OMO) with superior performance could be fabricated by adding O<SUB>2</SUB>. The optimized AgO<SUB>x</SUB> OMO electrodes yielded the highest average transmittance (<I>T</I> <SUB>avg</SUB>) of 93.5% and the lowest average optical loss (OL<SUB>avg</SUB>) of 1.01% within 500–800 nm at the percolation thickness of ~6 nm, thus, maintaining low conductivity. These outcomes were superior to the responses of the percolated Ag OMO (<I>T</I> <SUB>avg</SUB> = 87.2%; OL<SUB>avg</SUB> = 1.01%). Using the OMO structure at the rear electrode, transparent hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin-film solar was fabricated for building integrated photovoltaic windows. The best figure-of-merit (FOM; equal to the product of <I>T</I> <SUB>avg</SUB> and efficiency <I>η</I>) values of the OMO-based transparent solar cells could be obtained for percolated OMO structures. The cells using AgO<SUB>x</SUB> OMO (AgO<SUB>x</SUB> cells) performed better than the Ag cells; the best FOMs of AgO<SUB>x</SUB> and Ag cells were 140.8 (<I>T</I> <SUB>avg</SUB> = 27.8%; <I>η</I> = 5.51%) and 104.6% (<I>T</I> <SUB>avg</SUB> = 18.9%; <I>η</I> = 5.54%), respectively.         Novel method of laparoendoscopic single-site and natural orifice specimen extraction for live donor nephrectomy

        Laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy (DN) has been established as a useful alternative to the traditional open methods of procuring kidneys. To maximize the advantages of the laparoendoscopic single-site (LESS) method, we applied natural orifice specimen extraction to LESS-DN. A 46-year-old woman with no previous abdominal surgery history volunteered to donate her left kidney to her husband and underwent single-port laparoscopic DN with transvaginal extraction. The procedure was completed without intraoperative complications. The kidney functioned well immediately after transplantation, and the donor and recipient were respectively discharged 2 days and 2 weeks postoperatively. Single-port laparoscopic DN and transvaginal graft extraction is feasible and safe.

        Phylogenetic relationships of Pleurotus species based on RAPD analysis

        Oyster mushrooms including of P. ostreatus, P. eryngii, P. pulmonarius and P. cornucopiae are one of the famous mushrooms for foods in Korea. RAPD were carried out using 14 of oligoprimers to analyze the phylogenetic relationship among 57 strains of 32 Pleurotus species. Most of species formed the minimum clade with strains within species and was divided respectively species. Therefore clade was separated well in accordance species. Pleurotus species formed again clade to be added in close related to other species, and were discriminated by sixteen clades with each representative species including high similarity groups. Sixteen clades were composed representative species according to each clade. There were clade I of P. pulmonarius(P. sajor-caju, P. opuntiae, P. sapidus), clade II of P. eryngii(P. fuscus var. ferulae, P. fossulatus), clade III of P. ostreatus(P. ostreatus var. columbinus, P. spodoleucus, P. floridanus), clade IV of P. florida, clade V of P. djamor(P. flabellatus, P. incarnates, P. salmoneo-stramineus), clade VII of P. populinus(P. subareolatus), clade VIII of P. cystidiosus(P. cystidiosus var. formosensis), clade X of P. dryinus(P. dryinus var. pometi), clade XIV of P. cornucopiae(P. citrinopilieatus, P. euosmus), and clade XV of P. australis. These species were representative species each clades. Five species, P. ulmarius(clade VI), P. griseus(clade IX), P. calyptratus(clade XI), P. lampas(clade XII), P. smithii(clade XIII)and P. serotinus (clade XVI) were used each one strain in analysis, so they were clustered other groups.
