난지형 조숙종 마늘 신품종 ‘올캐’ 특성

원예연구소 남해출장소에서는 원예적 특성이 우수한 유전자원을 도입 선발하여 ‘올캐’로 명명하였다. 특성평가를 2000년부터 3년간 실시하였으며 2003년부터 3년간 지역적응시험을 실시한 결과 그 특성이 우수하여 품종등록 하였다. 도입 육성한 ‘올캐’ 마늘은 난지형 조숙종 마늘로 생태형으로는 난지형이며 추대형은 완전 추대종이다. 인경의 모양은 아래가 평편한 구형이며 구색과 인편색은 약간 자색이 돈다. 인편의 배열은 동심형(concentric)으로 ‘남도’ 마늘과 같다. 초형은 직립이며 초장, 엽초경 및 잎의 수는 대비종인 ‘남도’ 마늘에 비해서 약간 작거나 적으며 잎의 색깔은 ‘남도’ 마늘에 비해서 약간 연한 녹색이다. 평균구중은 42.2g으로 ‘남도’ 마늘 40.5g 보다 약간 무거우며 인경의 모양은 대비종인 ‘남도’ 마늘과 비슷하다. ‘올캐’ 마늘의 추대기는 3월 하순으로 ‘남도’ 마늘보다 15~20일 정도 빠르며 수확기도 일주일 이상 빠르다. Namhae Sub-station of National Horticultural Research Institute has collected 240 different garlic germplasms since 1999 and has used germplasms of superior quality. Among them, ‘Namhae 57328’ is a precocious variety with superior characteristics of growth and bulb, and was named ‘Allkae’ garlic (Allium sativum) in 2006. The garlic was registered after 3 consecutive years’ assessment of the variety trait starting from 2000 and a 3 consecutive years’ adaptability test from 2003. The ecotype of ‘Allkae’ garlic is southern one and bolting one is complete bolting type. The bottom of a bulb is flat and the colors of a bulb and a clove are light purple, and the arrangement of cloves is concentric as in ‘Namdo’ garlic. The plant type is erect one and its height is slightly smaller than ‘Namdo’ garlic’ one but it’s bolting in mid March which is about 20 days ahead of ‘Namdo’ garlic. Average bulb weight is 42.2 g which is slightly heavier than ‘Namdo’ garlic (40.5 g). The shape of the bulb is similar with ‘Namdo’ garlic.

Expression of an Angiogenin Binding Peptide and Its Anti-Angiogenic Activity

In the previous report (Choi et al., 1997), the angiogenin binding peptides identified from a phage-peptide library were analyzed by using the fusion proteins composed of the Escherichia coli maltose binding protein and its corresponding peptides. However, it was difficult to obtain a sufficient amount of the fusion proteins required for further analysis because of the low expression level. We now report a high level expression of the fusion protein and analysis of its anti-angiogenin activity. The use of strong T7 promoter and removal of signal sequence allowed about a 20-fold increase in the expression efficiency of the fusion protein. We were able to obtain about 10 mg of purified fusion protein from one liter of culture. The purified fusion protein showed angiogenin-specific affinity and inhibited the binding of biotinylated actin to human angiogenin at IC60 of 0.6 mM. Its anti-angioenin activity was also revealed by the chorio-allantoic membrane assay.

Higher Plasma Thrombospondin-1 Levels in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease and Diabetes Mellitus

<P><B>Background and Objectives</B></P><P>Thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) is associated with atherosclerosis in animals with diabetes mellitus (DM). But, no study has investigated the role of TSP-1 in human atherosclerosis. This study investigated the relationship among plasma TSP-1 concentration, DM, and coronary artery disease (CAD).</P><P><B>Subjects and Methods</B></P><P>The study involved 374 consecutive subjects with suspected CAD, who had undergone coronary angiography to evaluate effort angina. Patients were divided into four groups as follows: DM(-) and CAD(-), DM(-) and CAD(+), DM(+) and CAD(-), and DM (+) and CAD(+).</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>We found that plasma TSP-1 levels were higher in patients with DM(+) and CAD(+) (n=103) than those in other patients (n=271) (p<0.01). A multivariate analysis showed that male gender {odds ratio (OR), 2.728; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.035-7.187}, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (OR, 0.925; 95% CI, 0.874-0.980), glycated hemoglobin (OR, 1.373; 95% CI, 1.037-1.817), and plasma TSP-1 (OR, 1.004; 95% CI, 1.000-1.008) levels were independently associated with the presence of CAD in patients with DM.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Plasma TSP-1 levels were higher in patients with DM(+) and CAD(+) than those in other patients, and plasma TSP-1 levels were independently associated with the presence of CAD in patients with DM. These findings show a possible link between human plasma TSP-1 concentration and CAD in patients with DM.</P>

Enhancing the sporulation of Streptomyces kasugaensis by culture optimization

To be an effective microbial biocide, Streptomyces kasugaensis should be converted into spore during cultivation process for successful long-term storage. By statistical design methods, culture conditions including medium components and operating parameters were optimized and more than 100 times increase in spore yield was achieved. Addition of spent culture fluid (100 ppm), EDTA (30 ppm), mycophenolic acid (32 ppm) with combination of pH upshock (5.5 to 8.5) increased total viable cell and spore conversion rate, resulting in 1.6×107 (spore/mL) in 5 days of culture in a fermenter. This result provides a practical method for obtaining high spore number for commercial production of Streptomyces kasugaensis as a microbial pesticide.

반응성 천공성 교원증은 경미한 외상에 반응하여 발생하고 재발을 잘 하는 피부 질환으로, 중심부가 함몰된 각화성 구진을 특징으로 하며 조직학적으로 변형된 교원섬유가 표피를 통해 제거되는 현상을 나타낸다.후천적으로 당뇨병이나 신부전과 동반되어 나타나기도 한다. 환자는 48세 여자로 5개월전부터 발생된 전신의 소양감을 주소로 내원하였으며, 과거력상 10여년전부터당뇨병과 신부전이 있었으나 특별한 치료없이 지냈다. 피부소견은 전신에 중심부가 함몰된 다수의 소양성구진을 보였고, 조직학적으로 표피는 컵모양의 함몰과 변형된 교원섬유가 표피를 통하여 제거되는 소견을보였다. 치료로는 국소 부신피질 호르몬제와 항히스타민제 경구복용으로 호전을 보였으나 1개월 후 재발되었고 자외선 B를 2회 투사하였다.

Factors Associated with Emotional Exhaustion in South Korean Nurses : A Cross-Sectional Study

Objective We examined associations between emotional exhaustion and selected sociodemographic and psychological factors among nurses in inpatient and outpatient nursing units at a university hospital in South Korea. Methods The participants were 386 nurses who completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory, a measure of emotional exhaustion. Psychological characteristics were evaluated, including hardiness, self-esteem, experience of trauma, resilience, perceived stress, and social support. Correlation analyses examined the relationships between emotional exhaustion with sociodemographic, occupational, and psychological characteristics. Linear regression was used to evaluate the associations between emotional exhaustion and the assessed characteristics. Results Higher emotional exhaustion scores were associated with greater depression, anxiety, traumatic experience, and perceived stress. Exhaustion was inversely associated with hardiness, self-esteem, resilience, and quality of life. The regression analysis indicated that gender, marriage, resilience, depression, perceived stress, and secondary traumatic stress were significantly associated with emotional exhaustion. Conclusion This study showed that psychological characteristics, such as resilience, depression, and secondary traumatic experiences, may cause emotional exhaustion. Understanding the needs of people with distinct demographic and psychological characteristics offers valuable direction for the development of intervention programs to prevent burnout among nurses.

A case of trichoblastoma with plasma cell infiltration

Trichoblastoma is a rare benign follicular neoplasm, presenting as solitary, dark colored nodule on the head or neck. It can arises within a nevus sebaceous and can also coexist with BCC. Meanwhile, cutaneous plasma cell infiltration can be seen in various disorders, including inflammatory disease and infectious diseases such as syphilis and deep fungal infections. It can also occur with lymph node disease and polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia. A 53-year-old woman presented with scaly erythematous plaque on left cheek. Skin biopsy specimens were taken by punch biopsy. Smooth-bordered large basaloid proliferation and fibrotic stroma were seen in entire dermis. Interestingly, mixed inflammatory cell infiltrations were seen in upper dermis and they were mainly plasma cells. There was no evidence of other organ involvement and infection in laboratory tests. Preceding unnoticeable infection might independently leave a plasma cell infiltration regardless of trichoblastoma. However, we cannot exclude the possibility of association between trichoblastoma and plasma cell infiltration. She was diagnosed with trichoblastoma with plasma cell infiltration based on histological findings. In our literature review, there was no reported study about the association between plasma cell infiltration and adnexal neoplasm except syringocystadenoma papilliferum. Herein we report a peculiar case of trichoblastoma with plasma cell infiltration.
