Asbestosis is the disease of pulmonary fibrosis caused by the inhaled asbestos fibers, and could be diagnosed clinically, in the case of exposure history to asbestos is proved, by clinical symptoms of dyspnea or dry cough, physical examonation findings, and the radiographic features. But many othder inorganic dusts would show similar findings in the chest radiogram and sometimes the exposure history is obscure, so for the exact diagnosis of asbestosis lung biopsy is needed. In Korea, there have been some reports of survey in the workplace where asbestos is handled or of asbestos related diseases. This is a case report of asbestosis with accompanying pleural plaques, who had the occupational exposure to asbestos for 30 years and the consistent clinical, radiographic and pathological findings in the lung tissue obtained by the videoscope assisted thoracoscopic biopsy(VATS).
The in vitro and in vivo Safety Evaluation of Lactobacillus acidophilus IDCC 3302

As consumption of healthy foods continues to garner remarkable public attention, ensuring probiotic safety has become a priority. In this study, the safety of Lactobacillus acidophilus IDCC 3302 was assessed in vitro and in vivo. L. acidophilus IDCC 3302 showed negative results for hemolytic and β-glucuronidase activities. The whole-genome analysis (WGA) revealed that L. acidophilus IDCC 3302 did not possess antibiotic resistance or virulence genes. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of L. acidophilus IDCC 3302 confirmed its safety concerning antibiotic resistance. Furthermore, L. acidophilus IDCC 3302 was demonstrated to be nontoxic in the oral toxicity test in rats. Therefore, the results suggested that L. acidophilus IDCC 3302 might be safe for human consumption.

Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a biocompatible material with a lot of potential. To make BNC commercially feasible, improvements in its production and surface qualities must be made. Here, we investigated the in situ fermentation and generation of BNC by addition of different cellulosic substrates such as Avicel and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and using Komagataeibacter sp. SFCB22-18. The addition of cellulosic substrates improved BNC production by a maximum of about 5 times and slightly modified its structural properties. The morphological and structural properties of BNC were investigated by using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, a type-A cellulose-binding protein derived from Clostridium thermocellum, CtCBD3, was used in a novel biological analytic approach to measure the surface crystallinity of the BNC. Because Avicel and CMC may adhere to microfibrils during BNC synthesis or crystallization, cellulose-binding protein could be a useful tool for identifying the crystalline properties of BNC with high sensitivity.

N/A Anterior abdominal scintigraphy after intravenous injection of Tc-99m-human serum albumin (Tc-99m-HSA 20 mCi) was done in 16 patients with connective tissue diseases and 15 healthy control patients. Patients with proteinuria or hepatopathy were excluded. 1) 7(44%) patients among 16 connective tissue disease patients without the apparent evidence of external protein loss showed abnormal intestinal accumulation of albumin. 6 patients with positive albumin scintigraphy showed hypoalbuminemia. 2) There was no false positive scintigraphic finding in control group. 3) The serum albumin level in connective tissue disease patients (3.1±0.6 g/dl, n=16) was lower than control patients(3.9±0.3 g/dl, n=15) (p〈0.0001). 4) The serum albumin level was lower in connective tissue disease patients with positive Tc-99m-HSA scan(2.8±0.6 g/dl, n=7) than the connective tissue disease patients with negative scan(3.3±0.3 g/dl, n=9) (p〈0.05). 5) The hemoglobin level in connective tissue disease patients with positive scan(10.6±2.91 g/dl) was lower than that of the control group (13.6±1.5 g/dl) (p〈0.05). Hypoalbuminemia is frequently involved in chronic connective tissue diseases. Protein losing enteropathy(PLE) is also responsible for the majority of the hypoalbuminemia in these patients, But it has been ignored because the conventional method for the diagnosis of PLE was difficult to difficult to perform. Tc-99m-HSA scan also must be validated by more extended study and comparison with the quantitative study such as stool α-1 antitrypsin measurement. There must be a reevaluation of PLE in various diseases especially in connective tissue diseases with easy, fast, economical, and noninvasive method.
