Tenacity of the Everyday: Cantonese Narrative Singing from the Late Qing to the Cultural Revolution
Wen Cuiyan 연세대학교 영어영문학과 BK21 Plus 사업단 2021 Situations: Cultural Studies in the Asian Context Vol.14 No.1
The period from the late Qing to the Cultural Revolution, spanning three different regimes and social formations, witnessed the most turbulent and tremendous transformation in China’s history. However, when it comes down to the local level, everyday life nevertheless continued on even during the most disruptive years. How did radical social changes function in everyday life? How did everyday life change in response to the ideological transformations and social turbulence in the past century? In response to these questions, the article critically re-examines the everyday practices of Cantonese narrative singing during this historical period. Informed by Michel de Certeau’s theory of everyday life, as well as concepts developed by Chinese scholars, such as “the invisible structure of minjian” by Chen Sihe and “the structure of interdependence/ oppression” by Zhang Lianhong, this article seeks to depict a picture of everyday life that stands in tension with the grand historical narrative, and argues that everyday life never completely surrenders to ideology. Rather, it adjusts its relations with the politically dominant, absorbs it, makes use of it, and so maintains itself. This alternative perspective also serves to re-think the status of everyday life in the current wave of promoting intangible cultural heritage and traditional culture in China.
