• A multimodal deep learning approach for online course recommendation

        Weiwei Deng,Lingjun Fu,Han Chen 한국지능정보시스템학회 2022 한국지능정보시스템학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2022 No.6

With the rapid development of massive open online course (MOOC) platforms, learners are overloaded by numerous online courses. Many online course recommendation methods have been developed to facilitate learners to find suitable courses on the platforms. However, existing methods mainly focus on mining textual data and are inflexible to incorporate other types of data, which also benefit course recommendation. To bridge this gap, we propose a multimodal deep learning approach that leverages multiple types of course data for online course recommendation. The proposed approach employs multiple embedding techniques to process textual, relational, and categorical course data and uses the processed data to profile courses and learners for course recommendation. Experimental results on a real-world dataset show that the proposed approach outperforms multiple baselines in terms of precision and mean average precision.

The Intrinsic Relation between the Hydrogel Structure and In Vivo Performance of Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers: A Comparative Study of Four Typical Dermal Fillers

        Zhou Weiwei,Hou Shuai,Deng Shu,Peng Yang,Fu Wei,Zhou Yang,Yang Jie,Peng Cheng 한국조직공학과 재생의학회 2023 조직공학과 재생의학 Vol.20 No.3

BACKGROUND: Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are composed of cross-linked viscoelastic particles with high biocompatibility. The performance of the fillers is determined by the viscoelastic properties of particles and the connecting force between particles. However, the relationships among the properties of fillers, the interaction of the gels and the surrounding tissue are not clear enough. METHOD: Four kinds of typical dermal filler were selected in this research to reveal the interaction between the gels and cells. A series of analytical tools was applied to characterize the structure and physicochemical properties of the gel, as well as observing their interaction with the surrounding tissues in vivo and discussing their internal mechanism. RESULT: The large particles internal the gel and the high rheological properties endow the Restylane2 with excellent support. However, these large-size particles have a significant impact on the metabolism of the local tissue surrounding the gel. Juve´derm3 present gel integrity with the high cohesiveness and superior support. The rational matching of large and small particles provides the Juve´derm3 with supporting capacity and excellent biological performance. Ifresh is characterized by small-size particles, moderate cohesiveness, good integrity, lower viscoelasticity and the superior cellular activity located the surrounding tissues. Cryohyaluron has high cohesion and medium particle size and it is prominent in cell behaviors involving localized tissues. Specific macroporous structure in the gel may facilitate the nutrients delivering and removing the waste. CONCLUSION: It’s necessary to make the filler both sufficient support and biocompatibility through the rational matching of particle sizes and rheological properties. Gels with macroporous structured particle showed an advantage in this area by providing a space inside the particle.

      • Incorporating price preferences for product recommendation in electronic commerce

        Han Chen,Weiwei Deng 한국지능정보시스템학회 2022 한국지능정보시스템학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2022 No.6

Product recommendation methods have become the cornerstone of electronic commerce platforms due to their ability to solve the information overload problem and inform customers about their potentially interesting products. However, previous recommendation methods fail to consider customers’ price preferences, which are essential in recommending suitable products. To bridge this gap, this study proposes a hybrid recommendation method that combines customer behaviors, product content, and price preferences for product recommendations. In the proposed method, two strategies are designed to model customers’ price preferences. The proposed method is evaluated with a real-world data set and compared with three baseline methods. The evaluation results show that the proposed recommendation method with either strategy significantly outperforms the three baseline methods in terms of precision, recall. F-score, and mean average precision (MAP) measures.

      • Stabilization of monodisperse electrosprays in the multi-jet mode via electric field enhancement

        Duby, Marie-Hé,,ne,Deng, Weiwei,Kim, Kyoungtae,Gomez, Tommaso,Gomez, Alessandro Elsevier 2006 Journal of aerosol science Vol.37 No.3

Abstract

The electrospray of conducting liquids operated in the cone-jet mode is well known to have the unique ability of generating droplets uniform in size over a phenomenal range of sizes depending primarily on the liquid flow rate and physical properties. Since there is a monotonic dependence of size on flow rate, the liquid flow rates that can be dispersed are modest if the goal is to produce very small (below a few micrometers in diameter) droplets. Yet, this is precisely the application niche for which few, if any, atomization alternatives are available. Multiplexing the spray source is indispensable for the electrospray capabilities to have an impact in high-value-added applications. We report here on a novel approach to multiplexing based on a well-known, but hitherto unexploited, regime of operation, the multi-jet mode. Ordinarily, such a mode is rather unsteady and the range of flow rates at which appreciable multiplexing is achieved is small. However, if the multi-jet mode is anchored by some sharp features (e.g., grooves, ridges, etc.) machined at the outlet of the atomizer, to intensify the electric field at discrete points around its perimeter, then the cone-jets are simultaneously anchored at these features and a stable mode of operation is identified over several hundreds of volts and a broad range of flow rates. Most importantly, so long as the machining is accurately reproduced from point to point, droplets generated do not vary significantly in size from spray to spray. As a result, a compact, inexpensive and versatile multiplexing system is realized without sacrificing droplet monodispersity.

Protective effect of liensinine on periodontitis through its antioxidant effect in mice

        Liang Pang,Kai Zhu,Xia Feng,Weiwei Liu,Deguang Peng,Lihua Qiu,Xiang Gao,Jiang Deng,Ying Li,Xin Zhao 한국응용생명화학회 2015 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.58 No.6

Liensinine is the most important functional compound in lotus seeds; its protective effect on periodontitis was determined and the mechanism of its antioxidant effect was also explained. During the experiment, we could observe that liensinine could reduce the gingival index in periodontitis-induced mice, and these effects were similar to that during the treatment of periodontitis with the metronidazole drug. After the treatment with liensinine, the serum Immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) level was found to increase and IgG2a level was found to decrease compared to the periodontitis control mice. Liensinine and metronidazole could increase the superoxide dismutase (SOD) serum levels in the periodontitis-induced mice, and both the drugs at the same concentration (200 mg/kg) showed similar SOD activities, which was found to increase. Liensinine also increased the oxidationrelated factor of catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase, and decreased nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, and endothelin in the serum of mice, compared to the periodontitis control mice. The serum cytokine levels of Interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-a, and Interferon-c in liensinine-treated mice were lower than the control mice, but higher than the normal mice. The serum IL-4 cytokine level of liensinine-treated mice was reversed, i.e., higher than the control mice. In the periodontal tissue, the mRNA and protein expressions of inhibitor of kappa B-a, transforming growth factor beta 1, Interleukin-10, Mn-SOD, Gu/Zn-SOD, and CAT were increased by the treatment with liensinine compared to the control group mice, and nuclear factor kappa B expressions showed the opposite trend. Liensinine is a good functional compound in the treatment of periodontitis, similar to metronidazole drug. Higher concentration of liensinine had better effects.

Long-term Survivals, Toxicities and the Role of Chemotherapy in Early-Stage Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Patients Treated with Intensity-modulated Radiation Therapy: A Retrospective Study with 15-year Follow-up

        Lin Wang,Jingjing Miao,Huageng Huang,Boyu Chen,Xiao Xiao,Manyi Zhu,Yingshan Liang,Weiwei Xiao,Shaomin Huang,Yinglin Peng,Xiaowu Deng,Xing Lv,Weixiong Xia,Yanqun Xiang,Xiang Guo,Fei Han,Chong Zhao 대한암학회 2022 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.54 No.1

Purpose This study was aimed to investigate long-term survivals and toxicities of early-stage nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in endemic area, evaluating the role of chemotherapy in stage II patients. Materials and Methods Totally 187 patients with newly diagnosed NPC and restaged American Joint Committee on Cancer/ International Union Against Cancer 8th T1-2N0-1M0 were retrospectively recruited. All received intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT)±chemotherapy (CT) from 2001 to 2010. Results With 15.7-year median follow-up, 10-year locoregional recurrence-free survival, distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), disease-specific survival (DSS), and overall survival (OS) were 93.3%, 93.5%, 92.9% and 88.2%, respectively. Multivariable analyses showed cervical lymph nodes positive and pre-treatment prognostic nutritional index ≥ 52.0 could independently predict DMFS (p=0.036 and p=0.011), DSS (p=0.014 and p=0.026), and OS (p=0.002 and p < 0.001); Charlson comorbidity index < 3 points could predict DSS (p=0.011); age > 45 years (p=0.002) and pre-treatment lactate dehydrogenase ≥ 240 U/L (p < 0.001) predicted OS. No grade 4 late toxicity happened; grade 3 late toxicities included subcutaneous fibrosis (4.3%), deafness or otitis (4.8%), skin dystrophy (2.1%), and xerostomia (1.1%). No differences on survivals were shown between IMRT+CT vs. IMRT alone in stage II patients, even in T2N1M0 (p > 0.05). Unsurprising, patients in IMRT+CT had more acute gastrointestinal reaction, myelosuppression, mucositis, late ear toxicity, and cranial nerve injury (all p < 0.05) than IMRT alone group. Conclusion Superior tumor control and satisfying long-term outcomes could be achieved with IMRT in early-stage NPC with mild late toxicities. As CT would bring more toxicities, it should be carefully performed to stage II patients.
