        Effects of Traditional Chinese Cooking Methods on Formation of Heterocyclic Aromatic Amines in Lamb Patties

        Different amounts of the potent mutagenic and/or carcinogenic heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) areformed in muscle-based foods under different cookingmethods. HAAs (9 varieties) in lamb patties cooked usingtraditional Chinese cooking methods (roasting, frying, panfrying,and stewing in seasonings) were investigated. Thetotal HAAs contents in roasted, fried, pan-fried, and stewedpatties were 4.39-123.15 ng/g, 3.59-43.24 ng/g, 0.71-10.05ng/g, and 51.07-120.32 ng/g, respectively. Amounts of HAAsincreased as cooking time increased. 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo [4,5-b] pyridine (PhIP) was the dominantHAAs in deep roasted and fried samples, while 1-methyl-9H-pyrido [3,4-b] indole (Harman) and 9H-pyrido [3,4-b]indole (Norharman) were the main HAAs in pan-fried andstewed samples. Types and contents of HAAs formed atdifferent cooking times using different methods are unique. Stewing in seasoning generated a higher HAAs contentthan the high-temperature cooking methods roasting,frying, and pan-frying.

        OSI-027 alleviates rapamycin insensitivity by modulation of mTORC2/AKT/TGF-β1 and mTORC1/4E-BP1 signaling in hyperoxia-induced lung injury infant rats

        Background The mechanism of long time and high-concentration oxygen treatment leading to acute lung injury (ALI) or developmental lung disease in infants is currently unclear. Here we found that compared with the effect of rapamycin, pan-mTOR1/2 inhibitor OSI-027, alleviates hyperoxia-induced lung injury (HILI) by modulation of mTORC2/AKT/TGF-β1 and mTORC1/4E-BP1 signaling in infant rats. Objective Infant rats were treated with continuous inhalation of 90% medical oxygen. Normal saline, rapamycin, or OSI-027 was intraperitoneally injected, and the status of lung injury was tested on days 3, 7, and 14. The activation of mTOR/AKT/TGFβ1 and mTORC1/4E-BP1 signaling was confirmed by immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis in normal and hyperoxia-treated live precision-cut lung tissues. The inhibitory effect of OSI-027 extended to the active state of other proteins implicated in mTOR1/2 signaling was demonstrated in hyperoxia-induced injured lung tissues. Results Our data demonstrate that hyperoxia-induced serious lung inflammation and fibrosis. OSI-027 significantly attenuated the pathological process of HILI, inhibit the phosphorylation of the primary downstream targets of mTORC1/C2, and reduce the activation of TGF-β1 signaling. Conclusions The results suggest that mTORC2/AKT/TGF-β1 and the rapamycin-insensitive mTORC1/4E-BP1 (Thr37/46) signaling has an important effect during HILI with a potential meaning for the progress of novel anti-hyperoxia-injury strategies.       • Geometric Optimization of a Mathematical Model of Radiofrequency Ablation in Hepatic Carcinoma

        Radio frequency ablation (RFA) is an effective means of achieving local control of liver cancer. It is a particularly suitable mode of therapy for small and favorably located tumors. However, local progression rates are substantially higher for large tumors (>3.0 cm). In the current study, we report on a mathematical model based on geometric optimization to treat large liver tumors. A database of mathematical models relevant to the configuration of liver cancer was also established. The specific placement of electrodes and the frequency of ablation were also optimized. In addition, three types of liver cancer lesion were simulated by computer guidance incorporating mathematical models. This approach can be expected to provide a more effective and rationale mechanism for employing RFA in the therapy of hepatic carcinoma.

        OsFKBP42b Regulates Rice Growth and Development Through Interacting with OsABCB1 and OsABCB14

        FK506 binding proteins, a member of peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase (PPIase), are essential for plant growth; however, the molecular function of FKBPs remains largely unknown. In this report, we isolated and identified an FK506 binding protein, OsFKBP42b, that regulates rice growth and development. The OsFKBP42b mutation led to reductions in plant height, panicle length, and seed setting rate. Scanning electron microscopy of the wild-type and the mutant stems showed no difference in cell size. OsFKBP42b was expressed in rice various organs, especially in panicles, leaves, and stems. Subcellular localization suggested that OsFKBP42b was a plasma membrane protein. Furthermore, we found that OsFKBP42b interacted with the ATP binding cassette B proteins, OsABCB1 and OsABCB14, by yeast two-hybrid and bimolecular fluorescence complementation assays. Taken together, our results provide new insights into OsFKBP42b in rice.

        Asymmetric Supercapacitors Based on Co<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>@MnO<sub>2</sub>@PPy Porous Pattern Core-Shell Structure Cathode Materials

        In recent years, supercapacitors have been developed rapidly as a rechargeable energy storage device. And the performance of supercapacitors is depending on electrode materials, the preparation method and performance of electrode materials have become the primary goal of scientific development. This study synthesizes Co<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>@MnO<sub>2</sub>@PPy cathode material with porous pattern core-shell structure by hydrothermal method and electrodeposition. The result samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction transmission/scanning electron microscope, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electrochemical evaluation reveals that electrochemical performance is significantly enhanced by PPy depositing. The specific capacitance of Co<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>@MnO<sub>2</sub>@PPy is 977 F g<sup>-1</sup> at 1 A g<sup>-1</sup>, the capacitance retention rate of 105%. Furthermore, the electrochemical performance of Co<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>@MnO<sub>2</sub>@PPy//AC asymmetric supercapacitor assembles with AC as the negative electrode material is significantly better than that of MnO<sub>2</sub>//AC and Co<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>@MnO<sub>2</sub>//AC. The capacity of Co<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>@MnO<sub>2</sub>@PPy//AC is 102.78 F g<sup>-1</sup>. The capacity retention rate is still 120% for 5000 charge-discharge cycles.

        Establishment of a special pathogen free Chinese Wuzhishan Minipigs Colony

        To meet the increasing demands of specific pathogen free (SPF) minipigs in biomedical researches, 8 pregnant Chinese Wuzhishan minipigs (WZSP) sows with clear background were chosen to obtain SPF WZSP by hysterectomy. At $111{\pm}days2$ of the pregnancy, piglets were aseptically taken out from the sows and artificially suckled for 40 to 45 days in the positive isolators. Then, the piglets defined as F0 were transferred to barrier environment and fed with standard feeds. The original SPF colony was formed for breeding by selected piglets from F0 group of 6-8 months old. Biological characteristics of SPF WZSP were collected and further compared to those of conventional (CV) WZSP, including growth performance, reproductive performance, hematology and blood biochemistry, and major pathogens detection. As a result, 61 F0 piglets were obtained from 8 candidate sows, and 55 out of them survived. After strictly selection, 35 F0 piglets were used to form the original SPF colony, which produced 14 litters of SPF piglets defined as F1. Piglet survival rates, growth performance, and reproductive performance of SPF WZSP were similar to CV WZSP. Some hematology and blood biochemistry parameters showed significant differences between SPF and CV WZSP. Eighteen kinds of pathogens were identified to be free in F0 and F1 SPF colony by repeated pathogen detections. In conclusion, we established a satisfied SPF WZSP colony maintaining original characteristics, free of controlled diseases, and being proved to be a suitable laboratory animal.

      • Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Awareness, Acceptability, and Decision-Making Factors among Chinese College Students

        Background: College students are recommended as the target groups for catch-up human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. Systematical exploration of awareness, acceptability, and decision-making factors of HPV vaccination among Chinese college students has been limited. Materials and Methods: A multi-center survey was conducted in mainland China between November 2011 and May 2012. College students aged 18-22 years were stratified by their grade, gender, and major for sampling. Socio-demographic and HPV-related information such as knowledge, perceptions, acceptability, and attitudes were collected through a questionnaire. Results: A total of 3,497 undergraduates completed the questionnaire, among which 1,686 were males. The acceptability of the HPV vaccine was high (70.8%). Undergraduates from high-level universities, at lower grade, or with greater prior knowledge of HPV vaccines showed higher acceptability of HPV vaccination ($p_{trend}$ <0.001). Additionally, undergraduates with vaccination experience outside the National Expanded Program on Immunization (OR=1.29; 95%CI: 1.10-1.51) or fear of HPV-related diseases (OR=2.79; 95%CI: 2.28-3.41) were more willing to accept HPV vaccination. General knowledge of HPV vaccine was low among undergraduates, and safety was a major concern (71.05%). The majority of students wished to pay less than 300RMB for HPV vaccine and chose the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention as the most appropriate venue for vaccination. Conclusions: Although most undergraduates demonstrate positive attitudes towards HPV vaccination, challenges pertaining to introduction exist in China. Corresponding proactive education and governmental subsidy to do so are urgently needed by this age-group population. Suggestions and potential strategies indicated may help shape the future HPV vaccination program in China.

        Evaluation of AC Resistance in Litz Wire Planar Spiral Coils for Wireless Power Transfer

        A relatively high operating frequency is required for efficient wireless power transfer (WPT). However, the alternating current (AC) resistance of coils increases sharply with operating frequency, which possibly degrades overall efficiency. Hence, the evaluation of coil AC resistance is critical in selecting operating frequency to achieve good efficiency. For a Litz wire coil, AC resistance is attributed to the magnetic field, which leads to the skin effect, the proximity effect, and the corresponding conductive resistance and inductive resistance in the coil. A numerical calculation method based on the Biot-Savart law is proposed to calculate magnetic field strength over strands in Litz wire planar spiral coils to evaluate their AC resistance. An optimized frequency can be found to achieve the maximum efficiency of a WPT system based on the predicted resistance. Sample coils are manufactured to verify the resistance analysis method. A prototype WPT system is set up to conduct the experiments. The experiments show that the proposed method can accurately predict the AC resistance of Litz wire planar spiral coils and the optimized operating frequency for maximum efficiency.
