Among the "pivotally symbolic passage[s]" (Holly 139) in James's autobiography (such as the Galérie d'Apollon [SBO 196-99] or the "obscure hurt" passages [NSB 414-17]) is the final paragraph of the first autobiographical volume, A Small Boy and Others (234-36). James describes two things in this paragraph, both of which occurred while the James family was residing in the French channel port of Boulogne: his passing out in August 1857 from the initial attack of an almost fatal case of typhus that would leave him ill for two months and his memory of the private tutor who was engaged during his convalescence in the winter of 1857-58 to give him lessons. This tutor, James recalls, was named Ansiot.
Optimisation of symmetric laminates with internal line supports for maximum buckling load

Finite element solutions are presented for the optimal design of symmetrically laminated rectangular plates with various types of internal line supports. These plates are subject to a combination of simply supported, clamped and free boundary conditions. The design objective is the maximisation of the biaxial buckling load. This is achieved by determining the fibre orientations optimally with the effects of bending-twisting coupling taken into account. The finite element method coupled with an optimisation routine is employed in analysing and optimising the laminated plate designs. The effect of internal line support type and boundary conditions on the optimal ply angles and the buckling load are numerically studied. The laminate behavior with respect to fibre orientation changes significantly in the presence of internal line supports as compared to that of a laminate where there is no internal supporting. This change in behavior has significant implications for design optimisation as the optimal values of design variables with or without internal supporting differ substantially.

<P>Interfacial engineering using metal oxides, organic surface modifiers and other materials can effectively enhance the performance of conventional and inverted organic solar cells by reducing energy barriers for charge transport, while improving compatibility between organic active layer and inorganic metal oxides or transparent conducting electrodes. This short review introduces several important classes of interfacial materials which have been widely successful in improving the efficiency of organic solar cells, and covers some of the recent advances in this field. The Functional Anatomy of Sleep-dependent Visual Skill Learning

<P>Learning of procedural skills develops gradually, with performance improving significantly with practice. But improvement on some tasks, including a visual texture discrimination task, continues in the absence of further practice, expressly during periods of sleep and not across equivalent waking episodes. Here we report that the brain activation revealed significantly different patterns of performance-related functional activity following a night of sleep relative to 1 h post-training without intervening sleep. When task activation patterns after a night of sleep were compared with activation patterns without intervening sleep (1 h post-training), significant regions of increased signal intensity were observed in the primary visual cortex, the occipital temporal junction, the medial temporal lobe and the inferior parietal lobe. In contrast, a region of decreased signal intensity was found in the right temporal pole. Corroborating these condition differences, correlations between behavioural performance and brain activation revealed significantly different patterns of performance-related functional activity following a night of sleep relative to those without intervening sleep. Together, these data provide evidence of overnight bi-directional changes in functional anatomy, differences that may form the neural basis of sleep-dependent learning expressed on this task.</P>
