Regulation of Notch1 Signaling by Nrf2: Implications for Tissue Regeneration

<P>The Keap1-Nrf2-ARE signaling pathway elicits an adaptive response for cell survival after endogenous and exogenous stresses, such as inflammation and carcinogens, respectively. Keap1 inhibits the transcriptional activation activity of Nrf2 (p45 nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-related factor 2) in unstressed cells by facilitating its degradation. Through transcriptional analyses in Keap1- or Nrf2-disrupted mice, we identified interactions between the Keap1-Nrf2-ARE and the Notch1 signaling pathways. We found that Nrf2 recognized a functional antioxidant response element (ARE) in the promoter of Notch1. Notch1 regulates processes such as proliferation and cell fate decisions. We report a functional role for this cross talk between the two pathways and show that disruption of Nrf2 impeded liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy and was rescued by reestablishment of Notch1 signaling.</P>

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>This study investigated the effect of hydration differences on body fluid and temperature regulation between tropical and temperate indigenes exercising in the heat.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Ten Japanese and ten Malaysian males with matched physical characteristics (height, body weight, and peak oxygen consumption) participated in this study. Participants performed exercise for 60 min at 55% peak oxygen uptake followed by a 30-min recovery at 32°C and 70% relative air humidity with hydration (4 times each, 3 mL per kg body weight, 37°C) or without hydration. Rectal temperature, skin temperature, heart rate, skin blood flow, and blood pressure were measured continuously. The percentage of body weight loss and total sweat loss were calculated from body weight measurements. The percentage change in plasma volume was estimated from hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Malaysian participants had a significantly lower rectal temperature, a smaller reduction in plasma volume, and a lower heart rate in the hydrated condition than in the non-hydrated condition at the end of exercise (<I>P</I> <0.05), whereas Japanese participants showed no difference between the two hydration conditions. Hydration induced a greater total sweat loss in both groups (<I>P</I> <0.05), and the percentage of body weight loss in hydrated Malaysians was significantly less than in hydrated Japanese (<I>P</I> <0.05). A significant interaction between groups and hydration conditions was observed for the percentage of mean cutaneous vascular conductance during exercise relative to baseline (<I>P</I> <0.05).</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>The smaller reduction in plasma volume and percentage body weight loss in hydrated Malaysians indicated an advantage in body fluid regulation. This may enable Malaysians to reserve more blood for circulation and heat dissipation and thereby maintain lower rectal temperatures in a hydrated condition.</P>

Differences in in vivo virulence and in sensitivity to drugs among different isolates of Miamiensis avidus were analyzed. The isolate III showed the highest resistance against the scuticocidal activity of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) serum, and induced the highest mortalities of olive flounder fingerlings. The isolate II showed significantly higher serum resistance than the isolate I, but in vivo virulence of isolate II was not significantly different from that of isolate I. The secreted proteinases activity of isolate III was significantly higher than that of isolate I and II, and the activity was significantly reduced by the addition of E-64, a cysteine proteinases inhibitor. There were no differences among isolates in the sensitivity to doxycycline, however, there were significant differences in sensitivities to mebendazole and bithionol. These results suggest that the different characteristics of different M. avidus isolates should be taken into consideration for the development of control measures against scuticociliatosis.
A new Favonius species from the Korean Peninsula : Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae 鱗翅目 : 부전나비科

A new Lycaenid butterfly, Favonius macrocercus from the central mountainous region of the Korean Peninsula was described and illustrated. This species has been confused with F. orientalis, but can be distinguished from the latter by the external characteristics both of adult and immature stages. The description of early stages and the biological notes were also given.
Notes on some Korean thecloid butterflies described by F. Bryk : Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae 인시目, 부전나비科

The examination of the type specimens based on which F. Bryx described two new thecloid butterfiles from Korea (Bryk, 1946) proved that Ruralis orientalis ssp. chosenicola and R. o. ssp. hecalina are synonymized with Favonius ultramalinus and F. aurorinus, respectively. Further, it seemed likely that the specimens identified by Bryx as Ruralis taxila ultramalina were referable to Favonius saphirinus.
Associative Motion Generation for Humanoid Robot Reflecting Human Body Movement

This paper proposes an intuitive real-time robot control system using human body movement. Recently, it has been developed that motion generation for humanoid robots with reflecting human body movement, which is measured by a motion capture. However, in the existing studies about robot control system by human body movement, the detailed structure information of a robot, for example, degrees of freedom, the range of motion and forms, must be examined in order to calculate inverse kinematics. In this study, we have proposed Associative Motion Generation as humanoid robot motion generation method which does not need the detailed structure information. The associative motion generation system is composed of two neural networks: nonlinear principal component analysis and Jordan recurrent neural network, and the associative motion is generated with the following three steps. First, the system learns the correspondence relationship between an indication and a motion using training data. Second, associative values are extracted for associating a new motion from an unfamiliar indication using nonlinear principal component analysis. Last, the robot generates a new motion through calculation by Jordan recurrent neural network using the associative values. In this paper, we propose a real-time humanoid robot control system based on Associative Motion Generation, that enables user to control motion intuitively by human body movement. Through the task processing and subjective evaluation experiments, we confirmed the effective usability and affective evaluations of the proposed system.

In this paper, we propose an optimal pin assignment algorithm with improvement of cell placement in standard cell layout. The objective of the algorithm is to minimize the channel density by assigning nets to terminals of cells. If the number of possible terminal assignments for each cell is bounded by some constant r then the proposed algorithm runs in linear time. In most practical cases, the value of r is relatively small, and thus the proposed algorithm is effective and efficient to reduce the chip area.

We report an extremely rare case of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach. A 69-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a 2-month history of dysphagia and tarry stools. Endoscopic examination revealed a cauliflower-shaped protruding mass along the lesser curvature of the gastric cardia. Biopsy of the lesion revealed squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach. Computed tomography revealed a thickened stomach wall and a mass protruding into the gastric lumen. Total gastrectomy with splenectomy, distal pancreatectomy, and Roux-en-Y reconstruction was performed, together with a lower thoracic esophagectomy via a left thoracotomy. Histopathological examination of the specimen revealed well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach. Postoperative follow-up was uneventful for the first 18 months. However, multiple liver metastases and para-aortic lymph node metastasis developed subsequently. Despite systemic combination chemotherapy, the patient died because of progression of the recurrent tumors. Here, we review the characteristics of 56 cases of gastric squamous cell carcinoma reported in Japan.
