황과 알칼리금속계(IA) 황화합물 특히 Na₂S₂O₃와 K₂S는 국내의 Pink-C급 고령토(약 1.9% Fe₂O₃함유)를 염화반응할 때 반응속도 및 전환율을 현저히 증가시키는 우수한 촉진효과를 나타내었다. 황과 Na₂S₂O₃를 첨가한 경우 950K에서 20분간 반응할 때 고령토에 포함된 Si, Al 그리고 Fe 성분은 유사한 전환율을 나타내었으며 고령토만의 탄소-염화반응에 비하여 각각 20±1.2%, 60±2.0% 그리고 79±1.5%의 증가를 보였고 K₂S를 첨가할 때에는 각각 27±1.5%, 68±1.8% 그리고 80±0.6%의 비율로 증가하였다. 본 실험에서 사용한 황 및 황화합물은 반응 온도가 높아질수록 Al 성분의 전환율은 Si 성분에 비하여 크게 나타났다. 그러나 일정한 온도에서 반응 시간에 따르는 염화속도를 볼 때 반응 초기단계에서는 Al 성분의 염화속도는 Si 성분에 비하여 매우 크게 나타났으며 반응 시간이 증가함에 따라 Si 성분의 염화속도가 더 크게 나타났다. Elemental sulfur and alkali metal sulfur compounds, especially Na₂S₂O₃ and K₂S, enhanced to a greater extent the rate of carbo-chlorination and conversions of Si, Al and Fe portions in pink-C grade of kaolinic clay(about 1.9 % Fe₂O₃). In carbo-chlorination of kaolinic clay at 950 K for 20 minutes, the addition of elemental sulfur and Na₂S₂O₃ increased to the similar ratio the conversions of Si, Al and Fe portions in clay by 20 ±1.2%, 60 ±2.0% and 79±1.5%, respectively, more than those in carbo-chlorination of clay in the absence of additives. The addition of K₂S increased the chlorination of Si, Al and Fe portions by 27±1.5%, 68±1.8% and 80±0.6%, respectively. Elemental sulfur and sulfur compounds produced a higher conversion of Al portion than that of Si portion as the reaction temperature increases. However, the rate of chlorination of Al portion, in the early stage, increased to be much faster than that of Si portion, whereas the Si portion was chlorinated at a higher rate in the later stage of reaction.

S-adenosyl-l-methionine (SAM) synthase (SAMS) catalyze the biosynthesis of SAM, which is a precursor for ethylene and polyamines, and a methyl donor for a number of biomolecules. A full-length cDNA of SAMS from Solanum brevidens was expressed in Arabidopsis thaliana to study its physiological function. RT-PCR analysis showed that SbSAMS expression was enhanced significantly in S. brevidens leaves upon treatment with salt, mannitol, ethephon, IAA and ABA. The transgenic SbSAMS overexpression lines accumulated higher levels S-adenosyl homocysteine (SAHC) and ethylene concomitantly with increased SAM level. Expression levels of genes related to ethylene biosynthesis such as ACC synthase, but not polyamine biosynthesis genes were enhanced in SbSAMS overexpressing Arabidopsis lines. In addition, ABA responsive, wound and pathogen-inducible genes were upregulated in SbSAMS transgenic Arabidopsis plants. Transgenic Arabidopsis lines exhibited higher salt and drought stress tolerance compared to those of vector control. Based on these results we conclude that SbSAMS is expressed under abiotic stress to produce SAM as a broad-spectrum signal molecule to upregulate stress-related genes including ethylene and ABA biosynthetic pathway genes responsible for ABA, pathogen and wound responses.

Leptin is produced by adipocytes and its role in the regulation of lipid metabolism, feed intake, productive and reproductive performance of domestic animal species has been greatly stressed and extensively investigated in recent years. This study was conducted to develop a radioimmunoassay (RIA) for the estimation of plasma bovine leptin and to determine plasma leptin concentration in fattening Japanese Black cattle (Wagyu) and its crossbreds at commercial farms. Relationships of plasma leptin with plasma vitamin A and age of crossbred cattle were also determined. Recombinant bovine leptin (rbleptin) was produced by the E. coli overexpressed leptin as a GST (glutathione S-transferase)-fusion protein. Then antiserum against bovine leptin was obtained by its immunization in rabbits. Using this antiserum, a bovine specific RIA was developed and plasma leptin level was determined in 120 crossbred fattening cattle (WagyuHolstein, 50:50) at commercial farms. The plasma leptin level increased with the age of cattle and its level was greater in the crossbred heifers than in the steers. Plasma vitamin A level was negatively correlated with plasma leptin level in crossbred heifers and steers. This relationship was stronger in heifers than in steers. Plasma leptin was gradually increased with advancing age in fattening Wagyu cattle. In conclusion, development of a bovine specific RIA to estimate plasma leptin will contribute to better understanding of the role of leptin in cattle.

Beef marbling is known as one of the most important beef-quality traits in Korea. It is likely that marbling derived from fatty acids, mainly propionate, is mediated by rumen. Recently micro-agents were studied to enhance marbling, although many parts of that were digested in rumen. Therefore, this study was conducted to screen candidate materials to effect on beef quality with in vitro ruminal incubation. The materials such as saponin, chitosan, Zn compounds (4), vitamin C sources (2), Korean herb cocktail and garlic sources (2) were added to rumen fluid to 1.25% of substrate volume at 0 and 24 h incubation time. Total gas production in intact vitamin C source increased but that in all Zn compounds decreased (P<0.05). Total gas production in Zn sulfate compound less decreased than in other Zn sources. Propionate in Zn sulfate increased than the other candidate compounds at all incubation time (P<0.05). Experiment two was conducted to clarified effect of additives such as vitamin C sources (2), garlic lyophilized, Korea herb cocktail and Zn sulfate were supplemented with 2.5% volume at the 0, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h incubation time. Total gas in Zn sulfate was lower than any other treatments. Propionate in garlic, herb and Zn sulfate appeared to be lower than control and vitamin C sources at all incubation time, although significant difference was not observed in total VFA among control and all treatment. This study suggested that micro-agent might be used to improve beef quality with minute level.

The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of cooling rate and equilibration time on the survival, in vitro maturation and development to embryos of frozen-thawed bovine immature oocytes(Germinal Vesicle Stage). The cryoprotectants are used 10% ethylene glycol(EG) as permeating cryoprotectant and 0.05M sucrose(S) or trehalose(T) as low molecular weight nonpermeating cryoprotectants and 5% ficoll(F) or polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP) as high molecular weight nonpermeating cryoprotectants. Four freezing solution were uysed in this experiment(EFT: 10% EG + 5% F + 0.05M T, EFS: 10% EG + 5% F + 0.05M S, EPT: 10% EG + 5% P + 0.05M T, EPS: 10% EG + 5% P + 0.05M S). The best equilibration time and freezing solution was 15 min in EPT(83% survival rate of frozen-thawed bovine immature oocytes). When frozen-thawed bovine oocytes were cultured following IVM and IVF, there was no significant difference in cleavage and development rates among the EFT, EFS, EPT and EPS solutions. When 9 blastocysts derived from frozen bovine oocytes were transferred to 6 recipients, two recipients were pregnant. And one was aborted at 45 days of pregnancy and the other had a stillbirth.

In order to measure the mechanical properties of gold films on Si substrate, two types of specimens, i.e., bridged films and circular membranes, are manufactured. Using the wedge tip, the bridged films are indented so that the bridged gold films are pushed off, which is called as V-peel test. The load-deflection curves obtained by the V-peel tests are analyzed with the concept of geometrically nonlinear beam by using the minimum potential energy theory together with Ritz method. Young’s modulus and residual stress of the bridged gold films are obtained. Blister test is also conducted to measure the Young’s modulus and residual stress of the circular membrane specimens, of which deformation is measured by Twyman-green interferometer. By gradually increasing the applied pressure in the blister test, the interfacial fracture toughness between the gold film and Si substrate is measured.

장결핵의 흔한 합병증은 천공, 폐색, 누공, 영양결핍 등이 있으며 대량의 위장관 출혈이 합병되는 경우는 매우 드물다. 또한 장결핵에 의한 다량 출혈이 있는 경우에 수술적인 치료를 하게 되며 경도자 동맥색전술로 치료한 경우는 세계적으로 아직 보고된 바가 없다. 연자 등은 공장 결핵에 의해 활력징후가 불안정할 정도의 대량 출혈이 있었던 환자에서 응급으로 상부장간막동맥 혈관조영술을 시행하여 공장동맥의 분지에서 출혈이 있음을 확인하고 경도자 동맥색전술로 치료한
