        Investigation on Silver Electroplating Process for ITER Thermal Shield

        The ITER thermal shield which minimizes heat load by radiation and conduction from warm components to the structures operating at 4.5 K requires silver coating on the surface to reduce emissivity to 0.05. Although the silver electroplating process is widely applied in industry, it is unlikely that manufacturing equipment exists for deposition of silver coating on workpieces as large in dimensions as those for the ITER thermal shield. In this paper, scientific specification of the silver electroplating process for ITER thermal shield is investigated and bath designs are proposed. As a proving method for the process, a silver coating sample test for the material of the ITER thermal shield has been performed and the results are also presented.         A study on the status of manufacturing feasibility for the ITER thermal shield which is required to minimize heat loads transferred by radiation from hot components to cryostat components is shown in the paper. A detailed manufacturing process for the vacuum vessel thermal shield is given. This study suggests the optimum thermal shield sector fabrication and assembly procedure.=
