Power Absorption Measurements during NMR Experiments

The heating produced by the absorption of radiofrequency (RF) has been considered a secondary undesirable effect during MRI procedures. In this work, we have measured the power absorbed by distilled water, glycerol and egg-albumin during NMR and non-NMR experiments. The samples are dielectric and examples of different biological materials. The samples were irradiated using the same RF pulse sequence, whilst the magnetic field strength was the variable to be changed in the experiments. The measurements show a smooth increase of the thermal power as the magnetic field grows due to the magnetoresistive effect in the copper antenna, a coil around the probe, which is directly heating the sample. However, in the cases when the magnetic field was the adequate for the NMR to take place, some anomalies in the expected thermal powers were observed: the thermal power was higher in the cases of water and glycerol, and lower in the case of albumin. An ANOVA test demonstrated that the observed differences between the measured power and the expected power are significant.
Disorder in quantum critical superconductors

In four classes of materials the layered copper oxides, organics, iron pnictides and heavy-fermion compounds an unconventional superconducting state emerges as a magnetic transition is tuned towards absolute zero temperature, that is, towards a magnetic quantum critical point(1) (QCP). In most materials, the QCP is accessed by chemical substitution or applied pressure. CeColn(5) is one of the few materials that are 'born' as a quantum critical superconductor(2-4) and, therefore, offers the opportunity to explore the consequences of chemical disorder. Cadmium-doped crystals of CeColn(5) are a particularly interesting case where Cd substitution induces long-range magnetic order(5), as in Zn-doped copper oxides(6,7). Applied pressure globally suppresses the Cd-induced magnetic order and restores bulk superconductivity. Here we show, however, that local magnetic correlations, whose spatial extent decreases with applied pressure, persist at the extrapolated QCP. The residual droplets of impurity-induced magnetic moments prevent the reappearance of conventional signatures of quantum criticality, but induce a heterogeneous electronic state. These discoveries show that spin droplets can be a source of electronic heterogeneity and emphasize the need for caution when interpreting the effects of tuning a correlated system by chemical substitution.

This paper is built upon an attempt to answer the question: "What can be done to facilitate social integration between the elderly of Bagac, Bataan and the communication students of St. Paul University Manila?" The research was designed as a qualitative inquiry that involved an outreach activity by 24 dominantly female students of Development Communication to the senior citizens of Bagac, Bataan (Philippines) and a reflection period involving the students. The students were tasked to pay special attention to the digital engagements and/or disengagements of the elderly to allow them to learn more about the difficulties and potential of using social media in development-related projects involving senior citizens. The actual two-hour encounter involved socialization between the elderly and the students. The students, prior to the encounter, were tasked to generate the funds, use them to acquire and prepare the gifts, develop the program during the actual encounter based on research-based guidelines, and photo document the entire activity. They were given guide questions for reflections a week after. The reflections were thematically analyzed and revealed that in order to facilitate greater social integration between the elderly and the communication students. The university should address the health and digital aversion issues that intensify the sense of isolation of the elderly experience daily. This can be done by enhancing the communication skills of the communication students in 16 areas.
Background of Peruvian gastronomy and its perspectives: an assessment of its current growth

Peruvian gastronomy is continuously expanding throughout the world, captivating various regions and major cities with its flavors, textures, colors, and culinary excellence. The objective of this research is to describe the background of Peruvian gastronomy and its perspectives, in order to assess its current growth. A bibliographic and exploratory analysis was conducted, delving into its significance throughout history. The culinary background was delineated from the Pre-Inca, Inca, Colonial, Republican eras, up to the present day. Additionally, the perspectives from the government, private sector, and citizens were explored to evaluate the current status achieved worldwide. Given the importance of the current position held by Peruvian gastronomy, this study holds international relevance in assessing our legacy and paying tribute to the individuals from the past, present, and future whose strategic work enables the expansion of the Peruvian gastronomy. It is concluded that Peruvians must continue striving for continuous improvement in the key links of our gastronomy’s production chain.
Frailty-Independent Undertreatment Negative Impact on Survival in Older Patients With Breast Cancer

Purpose: The management of older adults with breast cancer (BC) remains controversial. The challenging assessment of aging idiosyncrasies and the scarce evidence of therapeutic guidelines can lead to undertreatment. Our goal was to measure undertreatment and assess its impact on survival. Methods: Consecutive patients with BC aged 70 years or older were prospectively enrolled in 2014. Three frailty screening tools (G8, fTRST, and GFI) and two functional status scales (Karnofsky performance score and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status) were applied. Disease characteristics, treatment options, and causes of mortality were recorded during a 5-year follow-up. In addition, we defined undertreatment and correlated its survival impact with frailty. Results: A total of 92 patients were included in the study. The median age was 77 (range 70–94) years. The prevalence of frailty was discordant (G8, 41.9%; fTRST, 74.2%; GFI, 32.3%). Only 47.8% of the patients had a local disease, probably due to a late diagnosis (73.9% based on self-examination). Thirty-three patients (35.6%) died, of which 15 were from BC. We found a considerably high proportion (53.3%) of undertreatment, which had a frailty-independent negative impact on the 5-year survival (hazard ratio [HR], 5.1; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.1–12.5). Additionally, omission of surgery had a frailty-independent negative impact on overall survival (HR, 3.9; 95% CI, 1.9–7.9). Conclusion: BC treatment in older adults should be individualized. More importantly, assessing frailty (not to treat) is essential to be aware of the risk-benefit profile and the patient's well-informed willingness to be treated. Undertreatment in daily practice is frequent and might have a negative impact on survival, as we report.

Magnetic hyperthermia mediated by superparamagnetic particles is mainly based in sinusoidal waveforms as excitation signals. Temperature changes are conventionally explained by rotation of the particles in the surrounding medium. This is a hypothesis quite questionable since habitual experimental setups only produce changes in the magnetic module, not in the field lines trajectories. Theoretical results were tested by changing the waveform of the exciting signal in order to compare non-sinusoidal signals against sinusoidal signals. Experiments were done at different frequencies: 200 ㎑, 400 ㎑, 600 ㎑, 800 ㎑ and 1 ㎒. Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide samples (SPION), made of magnetite (Fe3O4) and suspended in water (100 ㎎/ml), were used. Magnetic field strength varies from 0.1 ± 0.015 KA/m to 0.6 ± 0.015 KA/m. In this study was observed that the power loss depends on the applied frequency: for 1 to 2.5 RMS current the responses for each signal are part of the higher section of the exponential function, and for 3.5 to 8 RMS current the response is clearly the decrement exponential function’s tale (under 1 × 10³ LER/gr).
