        Blood-brain barrier dysfunction as a potential therapeutic target for neurodegenerative disorders

        The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is composed ofspecifi c tight junction proteins and transporters expressed onthe lining of endothelial cells of the vasculature in the brain. The structural and functional integrity of the BBB is one ofthe most critical factors for maintaining brain homeostasisand is mainly regulated by complex interactions betweenvarious cell types, such as endothelial cells, pericytes, andastrocytes, which are shaped by their diff erential responsesto changes in microenvironments. Alterations in these cellularcomponents have been implicated in neurodegenerativedisorders. Although it has long been considered thatBBB dysfunction is a mere ramifi cation of pathologicalphenomena, emerging evidence supports its critical role inthe pathogenesis of various disorders. In epilepsy, heightenedBBB permeability has been found to be associated withincreased occurrence of spontaneous seizures. Additionally,exaggerated infl ammatory responses signifi cantly correlatewith increased BBB permeability during healthy aging. Furthermore,it has been previously reported that BBB disruptioncan be an early marker for predicting cognitive impairmentin the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. We hereinreview a potential role of the major cellular components ofthe BBB, with a focus on the contribution of BBB disruption,in neurodegenerative disease progression.

      • THE EFFECT OF REMITTANCES UPON SKILLED EMIGRATION: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY

        This paper empirically examines whether remittance inflows affect emigration. We consider a panel of 133 developing countries as migrant source countries and seven five-year windows between 1980 and 2010. Because inflows of remittances could be endogenous, we employ a dynamic GMM estimation methodology. We find that inflows of remittances are positively associated with subsequent stocks of highly educated migrants living in OECD countries. We find little association between remittance inflows and subsequent changes in stocks of less educated migrants. Although many see the level of migration as influencing remittance flows, our results suggest that causality goes in the other direction as well, implying that the inflow of remittances could be a push-factor for emigration, at least for those with more education.

        정보시스템 인력의 선발 및 평가를 위한 퍼지 ART 접근방법

        국제적 경쟁이 치열해지고 급속한 기술발전이 진행되고 있는 기업환경에서 좋은 정보시스템 인력을 선발하고 평가할 수 있는 방법은 매우 중요한 이슈이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 정보시스템 인력이 보유해야 할 지식과 스킬에 대해서는 많은 연구가 진행되었지만 이들 인력을 선발하고 평가하는 방법에 대해서는 그렇지 못한 것이 사실이다. 인력 선발은 정성적인 측정치와 정략적인 측정치 모두를 포함하는 다기준 의사결정 문제인데 본 연구에서는 정보시스템 인력의 스킬, 능력, 지식에 기초하여 이들의 선발과 평가 과정에서 이들을 분류할 수 있는 모형을 제시하였다. 본 모형은 신경망 알고리즘 모형에서 도출한 것으로서 Jaccard 선택함수 기반의 퍼지ART 알고리즘을 적용하였다. 실제 인사자료를 활용하여 제안된 모형의 사용 용이성과 효과성을 검정해 본 결과 본 접근방법이 필드에서 충분히 활용될 수 있는 것으로 판단되었다. Due to increasing competition of globalization and fast technological improvements the appropriate method for evaluating and selecting IS-personnel is one of the key factors for an organization`s success. Personnel selection is a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem which consists of both qualitative and quantitative metrics. Although many articles have discussed various knowledge and skills IS personnel should possess, no specific model for IS personnel selection and evaluation, to our knowledge, has been published up to now. After reviewing the IS personnel`s important characteristics, we propose an approach for categorizing the IS personnel based on their skills, ability, and knowledge during evaluation and selection process. Our proposed approach is derived from a model of neural network algorithm. We have adapted and implemented the fuzzy ART algorithm with Jaccard choice function. The result of an illustrative numerical example is proposed to demonstrate the easiness and effectiveness of our approach.

        청정환기장치 최적제어를 위한 IoT 기반 실시간 공기질 모니터링 플랫폼 구현

        본 연구는 사물인터넷(IoT) 센서를 이용해 실내공기질에 주요한 영향을 미치는 미세먼지, 초미세먼지, 이산화탄소, 유기화학물과 온도, 습도 데이터를 실시간으로 수집/분석할 수 있는 실시간 실내공기질 모니터링 서비스를 클라우드 플랫폼으로 구현하였다. 이를 실내공기 정화시설인 청정환기장치와 연동하여 실시간 실내공기질 상태에 따라 환기장치 최적관리할 수 있도록 하였다. 본 플랫폼은 청정환기장치 내외부에 장착된 실내공기질 측정 센서로부터 실시간으로 데이터를 수집하는 IoT 데이터 수집부, 수집된 데이터를 클라우드 환경에서 가공/처리/적재하는 클라우드 데이터 처리부, 적재된 빅데이터를 분석하고 공기질 현황을 웹과 모바일에 시각화하여 보여주는 데이터 분석 서비스부로 구성된다. 그리고 이러한 플랫폼의 가동과 효과를 검증하기 위해 공기질에 민감한 영유아의 교육 생활환경인 국공립 어린이집 교실을 대상으로 실증을 실시하였다. 모든 분석 결과는 웹과 모바일에서 실시간으로 시각화 서비스될 수 있도록 실증 구현하였고, 환기장치의 실내공기질 개선효과는 실내공기질 측정 센서들의 측정값을 통계적으로 검증하여 공기질 개선에 기여하고 있음을 확인하였다. In this paper, we propose the real time indoor air quality monitoring and controlling platform on cloud using IoT sensor data such as PM10, PM2.5, CO2, VOCs, temperature, and humidity which has direct or indirect impact to indoor air quality. The system is connected to air ventilator to manage and optimize the indoor air quality. The proposed system has three main parts; First, IoT data collection service to measure, and collect indoor air quality in real time from IoT sensor network, Second, Big data processing pipeline to process and store the collected data on cloud platform and Finally, Big data analysis and visualization service to give real time insight of indoor air quality on mobile and web application. For the implication of the proposed system, IoT sensor kits are installed on three different public day care center where the indoor pollution can cause serious impact to the health and education of growing kids. Analyzed results are visualized on mobile and web application. The impact of ventilation system to indoor air quality is tested statistically and the result shows the proper optimization of indoor air quality.

      • Fabrication of DNA-Templated Te and Bi<sub>2</sub>Te<sub>3</sub> Nanowires by Galvanic Displacement

        <P>This paper demonstrates the use of galvanic displacement to form continuous tellurium-based nanowires on DNA templates, enabling the conversion of metals, which can be deposited site-specifically, into other materials needed for device fabrication. Specifically, galvanic displacement reaction of copper and nickel nanowires is used to fabricate tellurium and bismuth telluride nanowires on λ-DNA templates. The method is simple, rapid, highly selective, and applicable to a number of different materials. In this study, continuous Ni and Cu nanowires are formed on DNA templates by seeding with Ag followed by electroless plating of the desired metal. These wires are then displaced by a galvanic displacement reaction where either Te or Bi<SUB>2</SUB>Te<SUB>3</SUB> is deposited from an acidic solution containing HTeO<SUB>2</SUB><SUP>+</SUP> ions or a combination of HTeO<SUB>2</SUB><SUP>+</SUP> and Bi<SUP>3+</SUP> ions, and the metal wire is simultaneously dissolved due to oxidation. Both tellurium and bismuth telluride wires can be formed from nickel templates. In contrast, copper templates only form tellurium nanowires under the conditions considered. Therefore, the composition of the metal being displaced can be used to influence the chemistry of the resulting nanowire.         Occult Gastric Cancer Presenting as Hypoxia from Pulmonary Tumor Thrombotic Microangiopathy

        Pulmonary tumor thrombotic microangiopathy (PTTM) causing fatal pulmonary hypertension is a rare presentation of malignancy. In general, patients with PTTM rapidly succumb to death due to severe hypoxia. To date, very few cases of PTTM have been reported in the literature; and most of these cases were from gastric cancer and were diagnosed on post mortem autopsy, as it is extremely challenging to make an ante mortem diagnosis. We here report on a case of undiagnosed diffuse gastric cancer, presenting as worsening hypoxia. The clinical, radiographic, and echocardiographic features, and laboratory and pathological results were consistent with PTTM from gastric cancer. The patient was started on anticoagulation therapy, corticosteroids, and high-flow oxygen. However, her hypoxia worsened to the extent that she required ventilator support, and she died soon after intubation due to cardiac arrest. Since diffuse gastric cancer is associated with hereditary diffuse gastric cancer syndrome, cadherin 1 gene mutation analysis was performed to estimate the risk to her daughters. The test came back negative.

        Challenges in the Use of Targeted Therapies in Non–Small Cell Lung Cancer

        Precision oncology has fundamentally changed how we diagnose and treat cancer. In recent years, there has been a significant change in the management of patients with oncogene-addicted advanced-stage non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Increasing amounts of identifiable oncogene drivers have led to the development of molecularly targeted drugs. Undoubtedly, the future of thoracic oncology is shifting toward increased molecular testing and the use of targeted therapies. For the most part, these novel drugs have proven to be safe and effective. As with all great innovations, targeted therapies pose unique challenges. Drug toxicities, resistance, access, and costs are some of the expected obstacles that will need to be addressed. This review highlights some of the major challenges in the use of targeted therapies in NSCLC and provides guidance for the future strategies.
