      • Probable secondary transmission of antimicrobial resistant Escherichia coli between people living with and without pets

( Yeon Soo Chung ),( Yoon Sung Hu ),( Chan Hee Lee ),( Cheong Ung Kim ),( Young Kyung Park ),( Sook Shin ),( Kun Taek Park ),( Soo Jin Yang ),( Suk Kyung Lim ),( Yong Ho Park ) 대한인수공통전염병학회 2016 창립총회 및 학술대회 초록집 Vol.2016 No.1

Introduction: The cross-transmission of AR bacteria between humans and companion animals has been widely investigated. However, these previous studies only show the possibility of cross-transmission of AR bacteria between humans and companion animals. Actually, a secondary bacterial transmission (person to person) frequently occurs in confined environments such as schools between students and their family members. Therefore, we compared the genetic similarity of AR E. coli isolates from owners of dogs and non-owners sharing the same class room and their family members. Methods: A total of 129 swab samples were collected from owners of dogs and non-owners in veterinary college and households located in Seoul, Korea.Owner samples(n=35) were collected from 16 under-graduate students of veterinary college (external auditory meatus, 7 samples; nasal cavity, 7 samples; medial side of arms, 7 samples; anus, 11 samples) and 3 family members of them (anus, 3 samples). Non-owner samples (n=94) were collected from 42 under-graduate students sharing the same classroom with 16 owner-students (external auditory meatus, 20 samples; nasal cavity, 20 samples; medial side of arms, 20 samples; anus, 28 samples) and 6 family members of them (anus, 6 samples). The isolation of E. coli was conducted by selective media such as Escherichia coli broth and MacConkey agar plate. For identification of E. coli,PCR method targeting 16S rRNA gene was used in this study. The characterization of antibiogram of isolated E. coli was verified by a disk diffusion test and detection of the corresponding antimicrobial resistance genes according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute(CLSI).The relative risks (RRs) and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) of isolation and AR rates in E. coli isolates from owners and non-ownerswere calculated using SPSS software pack.To identify the cross-transmission of E. coli isolates between owners and non-owners, the genetic relatedness of E. coli isolates was determined by standard pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Results: Atotal of 32 E. coli isolates (32/129 isolates; 24.8%) were collected from 129 swab samples. The isolation rate of E. coli in owners (9/35 isolates; 25.7%) was similar to that in non-owners (23/94 isolates; 24.5%).According to the calculated RRs, living in homes with dogs was associated with a decreased prevalence of AR E. coli isolates (crude RR, 1.3; 95% CI, 0.5 - 1.9). The analysis of genetic relatedness of E. coli isolates showed that except for 8 isolates clustered into three clonal sets, most isolates showed diverse PFGE types which indicated a weak genetic similarity. Conclusion: Unlike our expectation, the results indicated that the possibility of secondary cross-transmission of AR E. coli between students and their family members was low as well as within classmates. Individual body conditions, private sanitary habits such as hand washing and house cleaning might affect to good hygiene of students. Many previous studies have emphasized the significance of hand washing in controlling infection and cross-transmission of pathogens, especially bacteria. Therefore, the further studies are needed to evaluate the protective effect of individual sanitary habits such as frequency of hand washing on secondary AR bacterial transmission in class room. • Resolving the degradation pathways of the O3-type layered oxide cathode surface through the nano-scale aluminum oxide coating for high-energy density sodium-ion batteries

        Hwang, Jang-Yeon,Myung, Seung-Taek,Choi, Ji Ung,Yoon, Chong Seung,Yashiro, Hitoshi,Sun, Yang-Kook Royal Society of Chemistry 2017 Journal of Materials Chemistry A Vol.5 No.45

<P>A surface-modified O3-type Na[Ni0.6Co0.2Mn0.2]O2 cathode was synthesized by Al2O3 nanoparticle coating using a simple dry ball-milling route. The nanoscale Al2O3 particles (∼15 nm in diameter) densely covering the spherical O3-type Na[Ni0.6Co0.2Mn0.2]O2 cathode particles effectively minimized parasitic reactions with the electrolyte solution while assisting Na+ migration. The proposed Al2O3 coated Na[Ni0.6Co0.2Mn0.2]O2 cathode exhibited a high specific capacity of 151 mA h g−1, as well as improved cycling stability and rate capability in a half cell. Furthermore, the Al2O3 coated cathode was scaled up to a pouch-type full cell using a hard carbon anode that exhibited a superior rate capability and capacity retention of 75% after 300 cycles with a high energy density of 130 W h kg−1. In addition, the post-mortem surface characterization of the cathodes from the long-term cycled full cells helped in identifying the exact mechanism of the surface reaction with the electrolyte and the reason for its subsequent degradation and showed that the nano-scale Al2O3 coating layer was effective at resolving the degradation pathways of the cathode surface from hydrogen fluoride (HF) attack.</P>

      • K0.54[Co0.5Mn0.5]O2: New cathode with high power capability for potassium-ion batteries

        Choi, Ji Ung,Kim, Jongsoon,Hwang, Jang-Yeon,Jo, Jae Hyeon,Sun, Yang-Kook,Myung, Seung-Taek unknown 2019 Nano energy Vol.61 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We propose P3-K0.54[Co0.5Mn0.5]O2, which is rationally designed as a promising cathode material for high-performance potassium-ion batteries (KIBs). Its composition adopts the use of the valence state of Mn above 3.5 + to minimize the disruptive effect of Jahn–Teller distortion in the MnO6 octahedra during the electrochemical reaction. Unlike other types of layered materials that suffer from the sluggish diffusion of large potassium ions accompanying multi-step voltage profiles, P3-K0.54[Co0.5Mn0.5]O2 delivers a high specific discharge capacity of 120.4 mAh (g-oxide)−1 with smooth charge and discharge curves. First-principles calculations predict an activation barrier energy of ∼260 meV for a large K+ diffusion, which is comparable to those observed in conventional layered cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. As a result, even at 500 mA g−1, P3-K0.54[Co0.5Mn0.5]O2 is able to deliver a high discharge capacity of 78 mAh g−1, which is a retention of 65% versus the capacity obtained at 20 mA g−1. Combination studies using <I>operando</I> X-ray diffraction, the <I>ex-situ</I> X-ray absorption near-edge structure, and first-principles calculations elucidate the nature of the excellent potassium storage mechanism of K0.54[Co0.5Mn0.5]O2. This work provides a new insight for the development of efficient cathode materials for KIBs.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> P3-K0.54[Co0.5Mn0.5]O2 is a new promising cathode for potassium-ion batteries. </LI> <LI> It has a high reversible capacity with excellent power capability in half cells. </LI> <LI> The low activation barrier energy promotes fast diffusion K+ ions in the structure. </LI> <LI> It shows a single-phase reaction with reduced J-T distortion during cycles. </LI> <LI> It can be applicable to full cells with hard carbon anode having high reversible capacity. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>We rationally design a new cathode material, P3-K0.54[Co0.5Mn0.5]O2, for potassium-ion batteries.
