Purpose: We evaluated the oncological outcomes of bridge to surgery (BTS) using stent compared with surgery alone for obstructive colorectal cancer. Methods: Consecutive patients who underwent curative resection for stages II to III obstructive colorectal cancer at our institution from January 2009 to March 2020, were registered retrospectively and divided into 43 patients in the BTS group and 65 patients in the surgery alone group. We compared the surgical and oncological outcomes between the 2 groups. Results: Stent-related perforation did not occur. One patient in whom the stent placement was unsuccessful underwent emergency surgery with poor decompression (clinical success rate, 97.7%). The pathological characteristics were not significantly different between the groups. The following surgical outcomes in the BTS group were superior to those in the surgery alone group; nonemergency surgery (P<0.001), surgical approach (P=0.006), and length of hospital stay (P=0.020). The median follow-up time was 44.9 months (range, 1.1–126.5 months). The 3-year relapse-free survival rates were 68.4% and 58.2% (P=0.411), and the overall survival rates were 78.3% and 88.2% (P=0.255) in the surgery alone and BTS groups, respectively. The 3-year locoregional recurrence rates were 10.2% and 8.0% (P=0.948), and distant metastatic recurrence rates were 13.3% and 30.4% (P=0.035) in the surgery alone and BTS groups, respectively. Conclusion: This study revealed that BTS with stent may be associated with a higher frequency of distant metastatic recurrence. Stent for stages II to III obstructive colorectal cancer potentially worsens oncological outcomes.
A Study on Satellite Internet Systems-Reliable Multicast with an On-Board ATM Switch

Satellite Internet systems are studied, considering the advantages in constructing them with on-board ATM switches. As an effective application, reliable multicast with the satellite Internet systems is discussed, compared to that with the terrestrial Internet systems. Reliable multicast protocols are reviewed, keeping in view of their use in the satellite Internet systems. Full-meshed connections established by the on-board ATM switches can put many-to-many multicast into practice with reliability in transmission. The performance of the satellite Internet systems are evaluated for the reliable multicast with a simplified NACK-based transport protocol as a first step. The results of the evaluation for the satellite Internet systems are compared with those for the terrestrial Internet systems. Finally, the advantages of the satellite Internet systems are clarified in reliable-multicast performance in contrast to the terrestrial Internet systems.

Expression of Mouse $\alpha-Amylase$ Gene in Methylotrophic Yeast Pichia pastoris

The expression of the mouse $\alpha-amylase$ gene in the methylotrophic yeast, P pastoris was investigated. The mouse $\alpha-amylase$ gene was inserted into the multi-cloning site of a Pichi a expression vector, pPIC9, yielding a new expression vector pME624. The plasmid pME624 was digested with SalI or BglII, and was introduced into P. pastoris strain GSl15 by the PEG1000 method. Fifty-three transformants were obtained by the transplacement of pME624 digested with SaiII or BglII into the HIS4locus $(38\;of\;Mut^+\;clone)$ or into the AOX1 locus $(15\;of\;Mut^s\;clone)$. Southern blot was carried out in 11 transformants, which showed that the mouse $\alpha-amylase$ gene was integrated into the Pichia chromosome. When the second screening was performed in shaker culture, transformant G2 showed the highest $\alpha-amylase$ activity, 290 units/ml after 3-day culture, among 53 transformants. When this expression level of the mouse $\alpha-amylase$ gene is compared with that in recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae harboring a plasmid encoding the same mouse $\alpha-amylase$ gene, the specific enzyme activity is eight fold higher than that of the recombinant S. cerevisiae.

This paper presents a fuzzy-logic-based output power smoothing method of a wind energy conversion system (WECS) with a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) using the inertia of wind turbine. The generator-side converter controls the generator torque of the PMSG, while the grid-side inverter controls the DC-link and grid voltages, respectively. For the generator-side converter, the torque command is determined by using the fuzzy logic. Inputs the fuzzy logic are the operating point of the rotational speed of the PMSG and the difference between the wind turbine torque and the generator torque. By means of the proposed method, the generator torque can be smoothed and the kinetic energy stored by the inertia of the wind turbine can be utilized to smooth the power fluctuations of the PMSG, and the wind turbine's shaft stress is mitigated compared to a conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control. Effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the numerical simulations.
A Survey of Japanese University Students' Future Use of English Goal Orientations

The aim of this study is to present preliminary results from an ongoing large-scale study of English-language future goal orientations held by Japanese university students. The work here involves an investigation of learners in multiple disciplines, from five universities, both public and private, in the Kanto-region of Japan, and their perspective on their future use of English. The results summarize written essays on L2-goal orientations. Preliminary results indicate Japanese learners (n = 629) as a whole have disparate L2-learning goals; however, these can be summarized into four broad categories: career, personal life, study, and general; and early findings indicate that most learners (63.56%) are oriented to career or personal goal orientations, while others are oriented to study and general. These early results help us to gain a better understanding of the future goals of Japanese university learners and their views of English usage in the future.
