        An Assesesment of Leaf Chlorophyll Concentration of Afforestation Tree Species in South-Eastern, Nigeria

        Leaf chlorophyll content provides valuable information about physiological status of plants. However, fewer studies have investigated the difference in chlorophyll concentration in leaves of tropical afforestation tree species. Therefore, this study examines the difference in foliar chlorophyll contents of six tropical afforestation tree species namely: Tectona grandis, Pentaclethra macrophylla, Piptademiastrum africanum, Azadirachta indica, Brachystegia eurycoma and Gmelina arborea found in the relict forest in Umudike, South east, Nigeria. A single factor experiment in a completely randomised design in three replicates was employed to analyse the rate of leaf chlorophyll contents. Fisher's least significant different was used to test for significance in mean difference in foliar chlorophyll contents between tree species at 95% confidence interval using analysis of variance. The results of this study showed a significant difference in foliar chlorophyll concentration between the tree species with Tectona grandis having a higher chlorophyll concentration than other trees this could be as a result of its higher vegetative activity which increases its primary productivity followed by Pentaclethra macrophylla while Azadirachta indica having least the chlorophyll concentration. The study further revealed that other indigenous tree species like Piptademiastrum africanum and Brachystegia eurycoma have higher chlorophyll concentration. Further studies should be carry out to examine factors that have contributed informed the differences in the chlorophyll concentration of these trees species, thus this would broaden the understanding of their physiological status and equally encourage there conservation.

        Trade liberalization and the geography of industries in South Africa: fresh evidence from a new measure

        Economic theory postulates that trade liberalization influences the location patterns of manufacturing activities across regions. However, the direction of this impact remains theoretically controversial. While few authors suggest that trade openness causes dispersion of economic activities, others argue that it strengthens agglomeration tendency. Against the background of ongoing debates in both mainstream economics and in geography, this paper explores the role of trade policy in shaping the patterns of geographical distribution of manufacturing activities across South Africa’s provinces over the period 1993–2016. Contrary to the previous literature, we employ a new measure of trade openness which is able to account for both South Africa’s trade share of her GDP and her relative size of trade compared to the world trade in a given year. Using this measure of openness, the study draws an inference based on the Eicker–White robust covariance Poisson Pseudo-Maximum Likelihood (PPML) which performs well in the presence of heteroscedasticity and data with zero values. The findings suggest that trade openness matters considerably for explaining the industrial patterns across South Africa’s provinces. In particular, industries facing trade liberalization are most likely to settle in proximity to the metropolitan cities surrounding Gauteng. The implication is that South African authorities can use trade policy reforms to complement appropriate redistributive spatial development policies. Such can ensure a fair inter-provincial distribution of industries and mitigate inequalities, especially the spatial dimensions.

        African Regional Trade Agreements and Intra-African Trade

        This paper investigates regional trade agreements in Africa by using panel data spanning 1995~2014. Trade creation and diversion effects are assessed through a gravity model estimated using the Eicker–White robust covariance Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood method. This method proves superior to the usual nonlinear least square estimators, especially against heteroscedasticity and data with zero value. The findings suggest that regional trade agreements may enhance trade. The differences in effects can be matched with the effectiveness in implementation by respective member countries. The trade gains of regional trade agreements do not come at the expense of trade with non-members. By controlling for the duration within a regional trade agreement, we also show that a very small but significant share of the benefits occurs over time in the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa, Southern African Development Community, Southern African Customs Union, and West African Economic and Monetary Union. Trade benefits seem to decline over time in the East African Community.
