Molecular Characterization of Brassica Pollen Allergen
Toriyama, Kinya,Okada, Takashi The Korean Society of Plant Biotechnology 2000 Plant molecular biology and biotechnology research Vol.2 No.2
Allergy to Brassica pollen has been reported in some countries. We have cloned a cDNA encoding a Brassica pollen allergen, Bra r 1. Bra r 1 belongs to a new family of $Ca^{2+}$-binding proteins, characterized by the presence of two EF-hand calcium-binding domains. Bra r 1 was detected in the tapetum, microspores, pollen coat and pollen tubes, indicating Bra r 1 is involved in pollen pistil interaction and pollen tube growth. We have engineered the hypoallergenic mutants of Bra r 1 for immunotherapy. Here we describe the review of molecular characterization of Bra r 1.

On 1 April 1945, US troops landed at the Okinawa Island and started to construct military bases. In order to prepare for invasion of Japan mainland, US troops needed many airfields and facilities to store weapons and materials. So they destroyed villages and fields to use the land for military facilities. On the other hand, there were many civilians to be protect in the battlefield. US military government established concentration camps for civilians, but the land distributed to military government were very small and not suited to live. Many civilians were forced to move into northern area of the island and keep in concentration camps. They were not permitted to go back to their village until October 1945. Military government constructed shelters and supplied foods and deployed civilians to works including military operation such as construction of airfields. US troops needed labor force, especially men labor, to support their operations. In some concentration camps, civilians were divided into two groups, men who can bear physical labor and the rest. After Japan’s surrender US troops moved to Japan mainland and Korea, a lack of labor became serious in many military facilities. But there were few civilian lador force in central and southern districts in Okinawa, because there were no land for resettlement in these areas. Then US troops changed their policy to open small land for resettlement of civilians. But huge land continued to be occupied by US troops, so many civilians had no land for agriculture and had no choice but to work in military bases. All civilian concentration camp disappeared in 1946, many civilians continued to be deprived their village by US troops and work in military bases to survive.

This paper presents the design concept, theoretical investigation, and fabrication of a six-degree of freedom (6-DOF) turbulent flow micro sensor utilizing the piezoresistive effect in silicon. Unlike other flow sensors, which typically measure just one component of wall shear stress ^[1,2], the proposed sensor can independently detect six components of force and moment on a test particle in a turbulent flow. By combining conventional and four-terminal piezoresistors in Si (111), and arranging them suitably on the sensing area, the total number of piezoresistors used in this sensing chip is only eighteen much fewer than the forty eight piezoresistors of the prior art piezoresistive 6-DOF force sensor ^[3].

About 90% of Indonesian people used rice as staple food. Rice production needs large amounts of water, especially under conventional rice production system. Recently, system of rice intensification (SRI) is promoted as an alternative rice cultivation to maintain rice yield through optimizing water and nutrient efficiency. This system use organic fertilizer, wide space, and intermittent irrigation. In this study, we evaluate performance of rice plant growth between conventional and SRI method in terrace rice field. Different cultivation method will affected on rice plant development and nutrient availability. We used two different treatment, continuous flooding (FL) as practiced by farmer and system of rice intensification (SRI). FL was used continuous flooding and SRI was used intermittent irrigation during rice growth. Three consecutive terraced paddy fields (100-150 m²) were used for the experiment. Rice plant growth measured every week and rice yield at harvest time. Total nitrogen and nitrogen availability determined from soil samples after harvest time. Rice plant growth was analyzed by monomolecular and polynomial model. Rice plant growth rate resulted that plant height was not significantly different between SRI and FL (p>0.005), although in different terrace. However, number of tillers rate showed that SRI was significantly increased tillers (p<0.005). Terrace two resulted higher tillers than terrace one and three, both in SRI and FL. Number of tiller have positive correlation with rice yield. The yield comparison resulted that SRI was significantly different with FL (p<0.005). Yield was increased under SRI method. In addition, total nitrogen and nitrogen availability under SRI field was higher than FL field.

This paper describes an experimental investigation for physical properties of fluorinated phenyl bicyclohexane liquid crystals (LCs) mixtures. Measurements are reported of the large anisotropic dielectric properties of two structurally similar LCs (1,2-difluoro-4-[trans-4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)cyclohexyl]benzene and 1-cyano-2-fluoro-4-[trans-4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl) cyclohexyl] benzene) mixed with a zero dielectric anisotropic LC (1-methyl-2-fluoro-4-[trans-4-(trans-4-ethylcyclohexyl) cyclohexyl]benzene). The results indicate that the mixing proportions strongly influence the dielectric constants along with the longer molecular axis. For two samples which is made from meta-para- or meta-fluorine substituted molecules, the temperature dependence of the anisotropic dielectric striking resemble that of a unitary compound with para-fluorine substituted. The threshold voltage of the mixtures relies on the element that possesses a large dielectric anisotropic. The mixing of the materials leads to a slight increase for splay elastic constants in an anti-parallel measurement cell.
Cytoplasmic destruction of p53 by the endoplasmic reticulum-resident ubiquitin ligase ‘Synoviolin’

Synoviolin, also called HRD1, is an E3 ubiquitin ligase and is implicated in endoplasmic reticulum -associated degradation. In mammals, Synoviolin plays crucial roles in various physiological and pathological processes, including embryogenesis and the pathogenesis of arthropathy. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms of Synoviolin in these actions. To clarify these issues, we analyzed the profile of protein expression in synoviolin-null cells. Here, we report that Synoviolin targets tumor suppressor gene p53 for ubiquitination. Synoviolin sequestrated and metabolized p53 in the cytoplasm and negatively regulated its cellular level and biological functions, including transcription, cell cycle regulation and apoptosis. Furthermore, these p53 regulatory functions of Synoviolin were irrelevant to other E3 ubiquitin ligases for p53, such as MDM2, Pirh2 and Cop1, which form autoregulatory feedback loops. Our results provide novel insights into p53 signaling mediated by Synoviolin.

Summary of Event Bacterial, mycotic peritonitis and Candida fungemia developed in a patient with moderate ascites who had undergone endoscopic ultrasound-guided biliary drainage (EUS-BD). Antibiotics and antifungal agent were administered and ascites drainage was performed. Although the infection improved, the patient’s general condition gradually deteriorated due to aggravation of the primary cancer and he died. Teaching Point This is the first report to describe infectious peritonitis after EUS-BD. Ascites carries the potential risk of severe complications. As such, in patients with ascites, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is typically preferred over EUS-BD or percutaneous drainage to prevent bile leakage. However, ERCP may not be possible in some patients with tumor invasion of the duodenum or with surgically altered anatomy. Thus, in patients with ascites who require EUS-BD, we recommend inserting the drainage tube percutaneously and draining the ascites before and after the intervention in order to prevent severe infection.
