        Synthesis, phase and microstructure characteristics of Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3-(Bi3.25La0.75)Ti3O12 ceramics

        Ceramics with formula (1. x)Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3x(Bi3.25La0.75)Ti3O12 (whenx = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 and 1.0) were prepared by asolid-state mixed-oxide method and sintered at temperatures between 950.C and 1250 .C. It was found that the optimum sintering tem-perature was 1150.indicated the existence of BLT- as well as PZT-based solid solutions with corresponding lattice distortion. Scanning electron micrographsof ceramic surfaces showed a plate-like structure in BLT-rich phase while the typical grain structure was observed for PZT-rich phase.The grain sizes of both pure BLT and PZT ceramics were found to decrease as the relative amount of the other phase increased. Thisstudy suggested that tailoring of properties of this PZTBLT system was possible especially on the BLT-rich side due to its large solu-bility limit.

        Structure-property relations of ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.5₂Ti0.48)O₃-(Bi₃.₂5La0.75)Ti₃O1₂ ceramics

        Ceramics with formula (1. x)Pb(Zr0.5₂Ti0.48)O₃x(Bi₃.₂5La0.75)Ti₃O₁₂ (whenx = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, 1.0) were prepared by asolid-state mixed-oxide method and sintered at 1150℃ for 4 h. All samples had densities at least 95% of theoretical values. Phase anal-ysis using X-ray diraction indicated the existence of BLT as well as PZT based solid solutions with corresponding lattice distortion.Scanning electron micrographs of ceramic surfaces showed a plate-like structure in BLT-rich phase while the typical grain structure wasobserved for PZT-rich phase. Ferroelectric measurements of these samples showed that addition of small amounts of BLT into PZT increased coercive eld and remanent polarization to about 18 kV/cm and 12.5 μ/cm2, respectively. Further increasing the amountof BLT in PZT degraded the ferroelectric properties of the ceramics. This behavior was in agreement with their microstructures anddielectric properties.

      • Seroprevalence of Anti-EBV IgG among Various Age Groups from Khon Kaen Province, Thailand

        Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is an extremely common herpesvirus that may cause asymptomatic infection or various diseases, including infectious mononucleosis, certain lymphoproliferative diseases and several types of neoplasms. Vaccine development is an important strategy to reduce the burden of EBV-associated diseases and the timing of vaccinations should be before primary infection occurs. In the past, more than 90% of Thai children were infected with EBV in early childhood. Now, due to the improved healthcare system in Thailand, we aim to determine current prevalence of EBV infection among people in different age groups. A total of 538 sera were collected from residents of Khon Kaen province in northeastern Thailand for detecting anti-EBV IgG. Sera of infants under 2-years-old were also tested for anti-EBV IgM and EBV-DNA. The prevalence of anti-EBV IgG was 47.1% (95% CI: 23.3-70.8) in infants aged 0-6 months, 34.9% (95% CI: 23.1-46.7) in those aged 6-24 months, 87.9% (95% CI: 79.5-96.3) in children aged 3-5 years and then maintained at above 95% through adulthood. These seropositivity rates among Thai children remain similar to those found in a previous study conducted 20 years ago. Thai children are still exposed to EBV from an early age. Therefore, a prophylactic vaccine should be given within the first two years of life.

      • Lack of Association between the MiR146a Polymorphism and Susceptibility to Thai Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

        Background: MiRNAs, small non coding RNAs, play a role in the regulation of hematopoiesis, with effects on cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. In addition, MiRNAs are thought to play an important role in tumorigenesis. The miR146a G>C polymorphism can lead to alteration of miR146 expression, which appears to be associated with development and progression of several cancers. This study aimed to investigate the association of the miRNA146a (rs2910164) G>C polymorphism and susceptibility to childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and clinical outcomes. Materials and Methods: Totals of 100 childhood ALL patients and 200 healthy children were studied for miR146a polymorphisms using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment-length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Results: The frequency of the miR146a G allele in controls was 0.40 compared with 0.38 in ALL patients. There was no association between miRNA146a (rs2910164) G>C polymorphism and susceptibility to childhood ALL (OR=1.484, 95%CI=0.712-3.093, p=0.290). Moreover, the frequencies of miR146a (rs2910164) G>C polymorphism were not associated with demographic data and clinical outcomes in ALL cases. Conclusions: The miRNA146a polymorphism was not significantly associated with susceptibility to Thai childhood ALL or any clinico-pathological variables.

        Vancomycin Area under the Curve and Pharmacokinetic Parameters during the First 24 Hours of Treatment in Critically Ill Patients using Bayesian Forecasting

        Background: Currently, the achievement of the target area under the curve (AUC)/ minimum inhibitory concentration ratio during the first 24 - 48 h of treatment is associated with reduced 30-day mortality and greater microbiological eradication in patients with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia. This study aimed to determine the AUC and pharmacokinetic parameters on the first day of vancomycin administration based on the Bayesian theorem to optimize the dosing regimen in critically ill patients. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included participants meeting the following criteria: 1) ≥18 years old; 2) receipt of at least one dose of vancomycin; 3) measurement of 2 vancomycin serum concentrations during the first 24 h of treatment; and 4) an intensive care unit admission, mechanical ventilator use, or an Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score >15 points. The AUC on day 1 of treatment and the estimated vancomycin pharmacokinetic parameters were measured using PrecisePK software based on the Bayesian theorem. Results: We obtained 132 vancomycin concentrations from 66 patients. The vancomycin pharmacokinetic parameters were as follows: AUC0-24, 571.09 (± standard deviation [SD] 188.62) mg/L·h; clearance (CL), 2.97 (± SD 1.81) L/h; volume of distribution (Vd), 50.60 (± SD 13.91) L; elimination rate constant, 0.062 (± SD 0.039) h−1; and half-life, 18.19 (± SD 15.96) h. Focusing on the vancomycin loading dose, AUC0-24 400 - 600 was achieved in 41.7, 46.1, 44.4, and 26.3% of patients with loading doses of <20, 20 – 24.9, 25 – 30, and >30 mg/kg, respectively. Whereas AUC0-24 ≥521 was achieved in 50, 50, 77.8, and 84.2% of patients with loading doses of <20, 20 – 24.9, 25 – 30, and >30 mg/kg, respectively. The CL of vancomycin was correlated with creatinine CL, whereas the Vd of vancomycin was significantly correlated with age and body weight. Conclusion: This study revealed that the higher Vd and CL values on the first day of vancomycin therapy were found in critically ill patients. Additionally, a higher vancomycin loading dose (25 – 30 mg/kg) might be required to achieve target of AUC0-24 during early phase of administration for critically ill patients.
