Effect of Zn/Al Cation Ratio on Corrosion Inhibition Capabilities of Hydrotalcites Containing Benzoate Against Carbon Steel

Thuy Duong Nguyen,To Thi Xuan Hang,Thu Thuy Pham,Anh Son Nguyen,Thu Thuy Thai,Gia Vu Pham,Ngoc Bach Ta 한국부식방식학회 2022 Corrosion Science and Technology Vol.21 No.6

Corrosion inhibitors based on Zn-Al hydrotalcites containing benzoate (ZnAlHB) with different molar ratios of Zn/Al were prepared with a co-precipitation process. Compositions and structures of the resulting hydrotalcites were studied with suitable spectroscopic methods such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and surface zeta potential measurements, respectively. Results of physico-chemical studies showed that crystallite sizes, compositions of products, and surface electrical properties were significantly changed when the molar ratio of Zn/Al was increased. The release of benzoate from hydrotalcites also differed slightly among samples. Anticorrosion abilities of hydrotalcites intercalated with benzoate at a concentration of 3 g/L on carbon steel were analyzed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), polarization curve, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and SEM. Corrosion inhibition abilities of benzoate modified hydrotalcites in 0.1 M NaCl showed an upward trend with increasing Zn/Al ratio. The reason for the dependence of corrosion resistance on the Zn/Al ratio was discussed, including changes in the microstructure of hydrotalcites such as crystal size, density, uniformity, and formation of ZnO.

      • Ordered assemblies of Fe3O4 and a donor-acceptor-type π-conjugated polymer in nanoparticles for enhanced photoacoustic and magnetic effects

        Pham, Thi-Thuy Duong,Seo, Young Hun,Lee, Dabin,Noh, Juran,Chae, Jeongwan,Kang, Eunah,Park, JaeHong,Shin, Tae Joo,Kim, Sehoon,Park, Juhyun Elsevier 2019 Polymer Vol.161 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We report that the ordered structure in the assemblies of iron oxide nanoparticles in conjugated polymer nanoparticles is the key to achieve better properties to realize multimodal theranostic agents for magnetic resonance and photoacoustic imaging. Hybrid nanoparticles of a conjugated polymer (PCPDTBT), a phospholipid (D8PE) with a primary amine polar head, and iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were prepared by a phase-separated film shattering process by varying the iron oxide concentration while maintaining a fixed mixing ratio of PCPDTBT and D8PE. Notably, the hybrid nanoparticles assembled at a molar mixing ratio of 1:1:0.8 (PCPDTBT/D8PE/Fe3O4) exhibited the shortest transversal relaxation time, <I>T</I> 2, and a photoacoustic signal 22 times higher than that obtained at the 1:1:0 mixing ratio. Structural analysis by X-ray diffraction together with the measurements of energy transfer by transient absorption spectroscopy confirmed that the structural ordering of these hybrid nanoparticles was responsible for their enhanced photoacoustic and magnetic properties.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Hybrid nanoparticles of a donor-acceptor-type conjugated polymer, iron oxides and a phospholipid. </LI> <LI> Shattering of phase-separated films produced hybrid nanoparticles. </LI> <LI> Strongly ordered assembly structures were confirmed by grazing incidence X-ray scattering. </LI> <LI> Contrast in both photoacoustic and magnetic resonance imaging were significantly enhanced. </LI> <LI> Ordering and clustering of conjugated polymers and magnetites were responsible for the property enhancement. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The antimicrobial efficacies of extracts and constituents fractionated from <I>Rheum tanguticum</I> rhizomes were evaluated by using <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I> bioassay against seven phytopathogenic fungi and ten pathogenic bacteria, respectively. Dichloromethane and ethyl acetate soluble extracts derived from <I>R. tanguticum</I> rhizomes effectively controlled plant diseases caused by five fungi <I>Magnaporthe oryzae</I>, <I>Blumeria graminis</I> f. sp<I>. hordei, Colletotrichum coccodes, Phytophthora infestans,</I> and <I>Puccinia recondita</I> in <I>in vivo</I> whole plant bioassay. In addition, these extracts showed strong inhibitory activity against the bacterial growth of <I>Acidovorax avenae</I> subsp. <I>cattlyae</I> (Aac), <I>Clavibacter michiganensis</I> subsp. <I>michiganensis</I>, <I>Xanthomonas arboricola</I> pv. <I>pruni</I> (Xap), and <I>Pseudomonas syringae</I> pv. <I>actinidiae</I> (Psa), with MIC values ranging from 125 to 250μg/mL. The active extracts of <I>R. tanguticum</I> rhizomes were fractionated by using various and repeated chromatographic techniques to yield seven constituents that included three anthraquinones and four stilbenes. Notably, at concentrations ranging from 75 to 300μg/mL, physcion (<B>DH03</B>) and chrysophanol (<B>DH04</B>) were significantly effective in suppressing the development of barley powdery mildew (BPM) caused by <I>B. graminis</I> f. sp. <I>hordei,</I> with control values from 80 to 96.7%. Moreover, stilbenes rhapontigenin (<B>DH02</B>) and desoxyrhapontigenin (<B>DH05</B>) had a broad spectrum and potent activity against phytopathogenic bacteria; <B>DH05</B> effectively inhibited the bacterial growth of Aac, <I>Burkholderia glumae</I> and Psa at MICs ranging from 38 to 150μg/mL. In this paper, we report their antibacterial activity for the first time. The botanical materials containing anthraquinones and stilbenes were active against both phytopathogenic fungi and bacteria. These results suggested that <I>R. tanguticum</I> rhizomes could be used as a new source of antimicrobial substances for developing a botanical fungicide and bactericide to control plant diseases.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> <I>R. tanguticum</I> extracts exhibited activity against phytopathogenic fungi and bacteria. </LI> <LI> Seven anthraquinones and stilbenes from <I>R. tanguticum</I> were isolated and identified. </LI> <LI> <I>In vivo</I> antifungal activity of botanicals was evaluated by the whole plant bioassay. </LI> <LI> The isolated stilbenes effectively inhibited the growth of phytopathogenic bacteria. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Inhibitory Effect of Benzoate-intercalated Hydrotalcite with Ce3+-loaded clay on Carbon Steel

( Thuy Duong Nguyen ),( Thu Thuy Pham ),( Anh Son Nguyen ),( Ke Oanh Vu ),( Gia Vu Pham ),( To Thi Xuan Hang ) 한국부식방식학회 2023 Corrosion Science and Technology Vol.22 No.1

This work studied the inhibitory effect of the combination of benzoate-intercalated hydrotalcite (HT-BZ) and Ce3+-loaded clay (Clay-Ce) on carbon steel (CS). HT-BZ was prepared by the co-precipitation method and Clay-Ce was fabricated by a cation exchange reaction. HT-BZ and Clay-Ce were assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) coupled with zeta potential measurement. Electrochemical measurements coupled with scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) were used for studying the inhibitory action of the mixture of HT-BZ and Clay-Ce on steel electrodes immersed in 0.1 M NaCl. For comparison, the inhibitory effect of HT-BZ or Clay-Ce alone was also evaluated. The results showed that HT-BZ combined with Clay-Ce provided synergistic inhibition of the CS substrate. The mixture of 0.5 g/L HT-BZ + 0.5 g/L Clay-Ce provided 93.5% inhibition efficiency. The protective mechanism of the HT-BZ + Clay-Ce mixture consisted of the reaction of released BZ and Ce3+ and the deposition of HT-BZ and Clay-Ce structures on the CS substrate.

Impact of Community Attachment and Resident's Support on Destination Sustainability: Evidence from Spiritual and Community Destination in Vietnam

THAN, Trong Thuy,KIEU, Thi Phuong Hoa,PHAM, Thi Anh Duong,HOANG, Thi Cam Van,TRAN, Thi Hau,NGUYEN, Huu Doan,DAO, Trung Kien Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.8

This study investigates the influence of community involvement on the destination sustainability for community destinations and spiritual destinations in Vietnam. Community involvement is measured by two constructs, which are community attachment and residents' support. A structural questionnaire consisting of 41 observation variables measured on a 5-point Likert scale was used to survey households who live in a spiritual destination in An Giang province and three community destinations in Lang Son province with the help of local tour guides and Youth Union. 168 out of 200 responses collected were valid for multivariate data analysis. The results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) reveal three main findings. Firstly, community attachment has a direct effect on both perceived benefits and destination sustainability. Secondly, while residents' support has a direct effect on perceived benefits, it indirectly affects destination sustainability. Finally, community destinations have a higher level of sustainability than the spiritual destination. Based on those findings, this study proposed three suggestions for local authorities, policymakers, and residents to improve the sustainable development of their local tourism destinations, including (1) diversifying local tourism products, (2) encouraging the community participation in tourism development programs, and (3) increasing in the expected benefits in local tourism development policies.

The Influence of Hydrotalcite Intercalated with Benzoate on UV Stability of Acrylic Coating

Thuy Duong Nguyen,Anh Son Nguyen,Thu Thuy Thai,Gia Vu Pham,Thi Xuan Hang To,Marie-Georges Olivier 한국부식방식학회 2020 Corrosion Science and Technology Vol.19 No.1

It is important to realize that benzoate was intercalated into hydrotalcite (HTC-Bz) by the co-precipitationmethod. In this case, acrylic coating with 0.5 wt% HTC-Bz was deposited on carbon steel using the spincoating method. Next, the HTC-Bz structure was characterized by Field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). In fact, an ultravioletvision spectroscopy (UV-Vis) was used to determine the benzoate content in HTC-Bz, and the UV absorptionability of HTC-Bz. Using electrochemical techniques, water contact angle measurement, and thermal-gravimetricanalysis, we compared the protective properties before and after QUV test, hydrophobicity and the thermalstability of acrylic coating containing HTC-Bz. The obtained results showed that HTC-Bz with a plate-likestructure was successfully synthesized; benzoate was intercalated into the interlayer of hydrotalcite witha concentration of 28 wt%. Additionally, it was noted that HTC-Bz has an UV absorption peak at 225nm. In conclusion, the addition of HTC-Bz enhanced the UV stability, hydrophobicity and the thermal stabilityof acrylic coating.

( Thuy Duong Nguyen ),( Boi An Tran ),( Ke Oanh Vu ),( Anh Son Nguyen ),( Anh Truc Trinh ),( Gia Vu Pham ),( Thi Xuan Hang To ),( Thanh Thao Phan ) 한국부식방식학회 2020 Corrosion Science and Technology Vol.19 No.2

This work examined the corrosion protection performance of benzoate loaded hydrotalcite/graphene oxide (HT/GO-BZ) for carbon steel. HT/GO-BZ was fabricated by the co-precipitation method and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electronic microscopy. The corrosion inhibition action of HT/GO-BZ on carbon steel in 0.1 M NaCl solution was evaluated by electrochemical measurements. The benzoate content in HT/GO-BZ was determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Subsequently, the effect of HT/GO-BZ on the corrosion resistance of the water-based epoxy coating was investigated by the salt spray test. The obtained results demonstrated the intercalation of benzoate and GO in the hydrotalcite structure. The benzoate content in HT/GO-BZ was about 16%. The polarization curves of the carbon steel electrode revealed anodic corrosion inhibition activity of HT/GO-BZ and the inhibition efficiency was about 95.2% at a concentration of 3g/L. The GO present in HT/GO-BZ enhanced the inhibition effect of HT-BZ. The presence of HT/GO-BZ improved the corrosion resistance of the waterborne epoxy coating.
