ANTECEDENTS FOR COSMOPOLITAN CONSUMERS: AN EXPLORATORY ANALYSIS OF JAPANESE COSMOPOLITANS

Research into country-of-origin effects has been conducted since the 1960s, and the research focus has gradually shifted from country-of-origin to ideological effects, such as consumer ethnocentrism, animosity, and more recently, consumer cosmopolitanism. From the postwar period to the 1980s, globalization brought a negative consumer attitude toward foreign products, but a positive one among an increasing number of consumers after the mid-1990s, partly due to the prevalence of the internet (Terasaki, 2016a). Even though the exact number is still unknown, cosmopolitan consumers are increasing faster than ever before (Riefler & Diamantopoulos, 2009; Cleveland et al., 2011; Grinstein &Wathieu, 2012). The concept “consumer cosmopolitanism” was first introduced by in Cannon et al. (1994), and since then a number of empirical studies have been conducted using the Cannon, Yoon, McGowan & Yaprak’s Cosmopolitanism (CYMYC) scale. Although consumer cosmopolitanism has become a popular theme in international marketing (Terasaki, 2016b), little research has been conducted examining the antecedents for cosmopolitan consumers (Riefler & Diamantopoulos, 2009). Our study fills this important gap in the emerging literature, using sequential mixed methods. This is important because we specify where prospective cosmopolitan consumers are, and what elements of products and services, and in some cases advertisements, potentially attract them.

Carboxylic group functionalized ordered mesoporous silicas

<P>Many research efforts have focused on the synthesis of organic and inorganic hybrid ordered mesoporous silicas (MSs) with functionalization of the exterior and/or interior surfaces aiming for applications in separation, adsorption, catalysis, drug delivery, and nanotechnology. Among the organic groups, the carboxylic group is a particularly useful reactive group for many applications. Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of GMAW Welding Fault Based on Mahalanobis Distance

The concept of calculating Mahalanobis distance (MD) was introduced in order to describe welding faults. First, a set of weldments without any faults were generated in a number of repeated sessions in order to be used as references. The values of Mahalanobis distance obtained from the reference weldments were taken as a reference or a standard. Then, additional weldments were fashioned while artificial changing the flow rate of shielding gas and types of contact tips and simultaneously obtaining values for arc voltage and current at a rate of more than 8000 samples per second. Last,Mahalanobis distances for voltage and current values were calculated and used for qualitative and quantitative analysis with comparison to values obtained from the reference welds. The results described in this article confirm that Mahalanobis distances based on the short-term changes of welding parameters can be feasibly and effectively used for quality rating of welding faults in gas metal arc welding.

The step-wise process of colorectal carcinogenesis from aberrant crypt foci, adenoma to adenocarcinoma, is relatively suitable for chemopreventive intervention. Accumulated evidences have revealed that maintaining an undifferentiated state (stemness), inflammation, and oxidative stress play important roles in this colon carcinogenesis process. However, appropriate molecular targets that are applicable to chemopreventive intervention regarding those three factors are still unclear. In this review, we summarized appropriate molecular targets by identification and validation of the prospective targets from a comprehensive overview of data that showed colon cancer preventive effects in clinical trials, epidemiological studies and basic research. We first selected a study that used aspirin, statins and metformin from FDA approved drugs, and epigallocatechin-gallate and curcumin from natural compounds as potential chemopreventive agents against colon cancer because these agents are considered to be promising chemopreventive agents. Experimental and observational data revealed that there are common target molecules in these potential chemopreventive agents: T-cell factor/lymphoid enhancer factor (TCF/LEF), nuclear factor-&B (NF-κB) and nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2(NRF2). Moreover, these targets, TCF/LEF, NF-κB and NRF2, have been also indicated to suppress maintenance of the undifferentiated state, inflammation and oxidative stress, respectively. In the near future, novel promising candidate agents for colon cancer chemoprevention could be identified by integral evaluation of their effects on these three transcriptional activities.

<P>Cage-type, two-dimensional (2D) cylindrical hexagonal (<B>C</B>), bicontinuous diamond (<B>D</B>), bicontinuous gyroid (<B>G</B>), and one-dimensional (1D) lamellar (<B>L</B>) structures of silica mesoporous crystals (SMCs) were obtained by using the anionic surfactant <I>N</I>-stearoyl-<SMALL>l</SMALL>-glutamic acid (C<SUB>18</SUB>GluA) as a template in the presence of the nonionic surfactant C<SUB>16</SUB>(EO)<SUB>10</SUB> (Brij-56). The mesostructures were controlled by the organic/inorganic interface curvature change induced by Brij-56. A synthesis-field diagram showed that the mesostructure changed in the sequence cage-type → <B>C</B> → intergrowth of <B>C</B> and <B>D</B> → intergrowth of <B>C</B> and <B>G</B> → <B>D</B> → <B>G</B> → <B>L</B> with increase of the amount of Brij-56. Mixed micelles were formed by the anionic and nonionic surfactants, the packing parameter <I>g</I> of which increased with increasing the addition amount of nonionic surfactant and the reaction temperature. The local <I>g</I> parameter was obtained from electron crystallography reconstruction results by calculating mean curvatures and Gaussian curvatures from the equi-electrostatic potential surface.
